The method is for producing porous calcium deficient hydroxyapatite granules and comprises the following steps: (a) subjecting granules of calcium sulfate anhydrous (CSA), calcium sulfate dihydrate (CSD) or calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH), the granules comprising interconnected pores with a minimum mean diameter of 3 microns, to a first incubation in an alkaline aqueous solution having a pH-value of less than 10 and containing POions; (b) subjecting the granules to a second incubation in an alkaline aqueous solution having a pH-value of more than 10 and optionally POions; (c) filtering and drying the obtained porous granules of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite; and wherein (d) the sum of the amounts of POions present in the first and second incubation is at least as large as the amount of SOions of the granules used for step (a). The porous calcium deficient hydroxyapatite granules obtained by the invention may be purposefully used as carriers for biologically active substances in particular for proteins.

Method for producing porous calcium deficient hydroxyapatite granules

The method is for producing porous calcium deficient hydroxyapatite granules and comprises the following steps: (a) subjecting granules of calcium sulfate anhydrous (CSA), calcium sulfate dihydrate (CSD) or calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH) to an incubation in an alkaline aqueous solution having a pH-value of less than 10 and containing POions; whereby the granules of calcium sulfate anhydrous (CSA), calcium sulfate dihydrate (CSD) or calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH) comprise interconnected pores with a minimum mean diameter of 3 microns; (b) washing with water the granules obtained after incubation of step a); (c) drying the obtained porous granules of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite; whereby (d) the amount-of POions present in the incubation of step a) is at least as large as the amount of SOions of the granules used for step (a). The porous calcium deficient hydroxyapatite granules obtained by the invention may be purposefully used as carriers for biologically active substances in particular for proteins.

Bone substitute and method for producing the same

A kneadable and moldable bone-replacement material includes a mixture of calcium-containing ceramic particles and a hydrogel or a substance which can be swelled into a hydrogel. Calcium phosphate particles and hydraulic cements based thereon

A hydraulic cement based on calcium phosphate for surgical use comprising A) a first component comprising powder particles of calcium phosphate; and B) a second component comprising water. The calcium phosphate comprises anhydrous, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and the ACP is obtained by milling a calcium phosphate synthesized above 500&#xb0; C. The cement according to the invention has the advantage of being very fast setting compared to prior art calcium phosphate cements. The setting reaction is finished much faster although the initial part of the reaction proceeds at the same speed as with known cements.

Hydraulic cement based on calcium phosphate for surgical use

A hydraulic cement is based on calcium phosphate for surgical use, and includes three components. The first component includes &#x3b1;-tricalcium phosphate powder particles. The second, component includes calcium sulphate dehydrate. The third component includes water. Furthermore the hydraulic cement does not contain more calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH) than 10% of the total amount of the calcium sulphate dihydrate (CSD).

A brushite cement for surgical purposes includes a first component including a basic calcium phosphate, a second component including an acidic phosphate, a third component including water, and a fourth component including a source of magnesium used to stabilize an end-product of the setting reaction between the components. The solubility of the source of magnesium is smaller than 100 g/L. The components are chosen in such an amount that (i) the pH of the cement past during setting is lower than 6.0; and (ii) the end-product of the setting reaction comprises dicalcium phosphate dihydrate.

Brushite hydraulic cement stabilized with a magnesium salt

A composition including a hydraulic cement for implantation in a human or animal body. The hydraulic cement includes a first component, a second component, and a third component. The first component includes a calcium source while the second component includes water. The third component is a hydrophobic liquid. The composition hardens after mixing of the components, and results in a cement with open macroporosity enabling a rapid bone ingrowth.
