A power transmission for use in a powertrain has an input shaft, an output shaft, an input planetary gearset, and an output planetary gearset. The planetary gearsets are controlled through the selective engagement of seven torque-transmitting mechanisms, three of which are rotating-type torque-transmitting mechanisms and four of which are stationary-type torque-transmitting mechanisms. By selective engagement of the torque-transmitting mechanisms in combinations of three, the input planetary gearset and the output planetary gearset are combined to establish eight forward speed ratios between the input shaft and the output shaft.

Multi-speed planetary power transmission

The fluid transfer apparatus has an outer composite body having end sealing lips that are adapted to sealingly engage the surface surrounding the spaced passages between which fluid is to be transferred. The transfer apparatus has a central member having a uniform cross section adapted to transfer fluid between these passages and also has two end members which engage within and align with the passages to permit continued fluid transfer in view of slight longitudinal misalignments of the first and second passages.

Fluid transfer apparatus

A vehicle transmission, for example a CVT transmission, is provided with a decoupling device between an engine output shaft and a vehicle driveline. The decoupling device in one embodiment includes a clutch assembly which is fixed to a shaft coupled to the transmission output and engageable with a driveline through a piston arrangement. The piston can be urged against the force of a spring by fluid pressure to cause engagement of the clutches of the clutch assembly and thereby to couple engine torque to the vehicle driveline. When fluid pressure is released, the spring urges the piston to a position in which the clutches of the clutch assembly are disengaged, so as to disengage the engine output from the vehicle driveline. In the disengaged state, the vehicle can be towed.

Transmission decoupling device

A torque-transmitting mechanism has first and second housing members, which are interconnected by a plurality of friction members. The torque-transmitting mechanism also includes an apply piston, which has an apply head slidably disposed within one of the housings and a spring body portion, which is effective to urge the apply head out of engagement with the friction members. The apply head is urged into engagement with the friction members through the application of pressure to an apply chamber formed between the apply head, the spring body, and the one housing. Upon release of the pressure within the apply chamber, the spring body enforces retraction of the apply head and disengagement of the torque-transmitting mechanism.

Torque-transmitting mechanism with a self-returning piston

A powertrain has a planetary transmission having a planetary gear arrangement and six torque transmitting mechanisms that are controlled to provide six forward ratios and a reverse ratio. The planetary gear arrangement includes two sun gear members, two ring gear members, and a planet carrier assembly member that are disposed in three axially spaced planes of gear mesh. The planet carrier member has a short pinion gear member, meshing (first plane) with one sun gear member, a first long pinion gear member having a small gear section, meshing (first plane) with the small pinion gear member and one ring gear member, and a large gear section, meshing(second plane) with the other sun gear member, and a second long pinion gear member, meshing (second and third planes) with both the large gear section (second plane) and the second ring gear member (third plane). The second long pinion gear member permits the pitch diameter of the second ring gear member to be radially inward of the pitch diameter of the first ring gear member.

Six speed planetary transmission with two overdrive ratios

An automatic transmission (10) comprising a housing (12); a planetary gear train (14) mounted within the housing; an input drive shaft (16) connectable to main drive means (38) to provide input drive to the planetary gear train; an output drive shaft (18) from the planetary gear train; and an auxiliary drive means (E) for providing a variable auxiliary drive input (34) to the planetary gear train; wherein the planetary gear train includes a first planetary gear set (40) and a second planetary gear set (42); the first planetary gear set including a sun gear (44) having a drive input (26) connectable to the input drive shaft and a reaction input (28) connectable to the housing, a pinion gear (46) interengaging with the sun gear, and a pinion carrier (48) on which the pinion gear is rotatably mounted, the pinion carrier having a drive input (24) connectable to the input drive shaft and a reaction input (30,32) connectable to the housing, and being connected with the auxiliary drive input; the second planetary gear set including a sun gear (50) having a drive input (22) connectable with the input drive shaft; and wherein the output drive shaft is driven by a ring gear (54) of the first planetary gear set or the second planetary gear set. Provides an automatic transmission with first and second constant forward gear ratios with a continuously variable gear ratio therebetween.
