A communication network comprises an access network, a subsystem and a gateway computer that bridges the access network and the subsystem. A plurality of client applications of a single user may connect to services provided by the subsystem. The gateway registers the user in the subsystem and associates all communication of the plurality of instances with a unique identifier that identifies the combination of the user and the gateway thus reducing the number of user registrations in the subsystem.

In a cellular communication system a radio terminal registers a network based service, e.g. a Communication Waiting supplementary service. By transmitting a register request comprising a corresponding option tag, the radio terminal explores whether the network supports the requested network based service. In that case a user profile associated with the requesting radio terminal is updated and the radio terminal may henceforth use that service.

In an LTE telecommunication system subscribers may be member of a group of users wherein subscriber related data are stored on different servers according to the group of users. To enable an Aggregation/Authentication Proxy to route XCAP messages to the competent server for processing the Proxy is enabled to determine the user group membership of the subscriber by querying the Home Subscriber Server.
