Calendered films or sheets obtained from a composition comprising at least one polyester which has the L* color value of greater than 90 and comprises terephthalic acid residues, optional aromatic and/or aliphatic dicarboxylic acid residues having up to 20 carbon atoms; glycol component comprising 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol residues and ethylene glycol residues; a catalyst/stabilizer component which comprises titanium atoms, manganese atoms, phosphorous atoms; fillers; release additives and does not comprises tin atoms. Calendered films or sheets can be used in a wide range of applications including packaging, pool liners, graphic arts, transaction cards, security cards and others.

A method of manufacturing a molded article by a low shear manufacturing process that includes: placing a solid polyester in a mold having mold surfaces; heating said polyester until it becomes molten; dispersing said molten polyester over said mold surfaces; solidifying said molten polyester to form a solid molded article; and removing said molded article from said mold; where the polyester is obtained by polymerization of dimethylcyclohexane dicarboxylic acid, cyclohexane dimethanol, polytetramethylene ether glycol and branching agent and has a steep melting curve evidenced by a puddling curve slope of &#x2212;2 to &#x2212;10.

Copolyesters for use in low shear melt applications

Thermoplastic polymer compositions having enhanced properties, as well as methods of making and using the same, are provided. Thermoplastic polymers according to some aspects of the present invention may be rigid, but may also be suitable for use in applications requiring a thermoplastic polymer resin. Thermoplastic polymers according to various aspects of the present invention may be useful in preparing shaped articles such as, for example, sheets, films, tubes, preforms, bottles, profiles, and other similar articles.

Disclosed are polyester blends that provide improved stress whitening behavior. The blends may be prepared from a polyester having crystallization half-time of at least 5 minutes and a polyester elastomer. The polyesters blends may be extruded or, in the presence of a release additive, calendered to produce film or sheet. Also disclosed are processes for making a film or sheet by extrusion or calendering the above blends and the film or sheet produced therefrom. The polyester blend and the film or sheet produced therefrom also may include plasticizers and/or flame retardants to increase their flexibility and enable their use in commercial applications requiring flame resistance. The film and sheet have excellent appearance and can be used in a wide range of decorative and packaging applications.

Polyeste blends with improved stress whitening for film and sheet applications

Disclosed are high clarity films produced from semicrystalline polyesters by calendering. These films unexpectedly develop a higher peak melting point, which leads to higher thermal resistance. The semicrystalline polyesters may be biodegradable. When these calendered films are oriented, they develop unexpectedly high physical strength or clarity in comparison to films that are prepared by conventional techniques.

High clarity films with improved thermal properties

Flame retardant polyester compositions suitable for calendering may be prepared from polyesters having crystallization half time of at least 5 minutes, a plasticizer, a phosphorus-containing flame retardant miscible with the plasticized polyester, and an additive effective to prevent sticking of the polyester to the calendar rolls. Also disclosed are processes for flame retardant films or sheets by calendering the above compositions and the flame retardant films or sheets produced therefrom. These films and sheets have excellent appearance, flexibility, and flame retardancy, and can be used in a wide range of decorative and packaging applications.

Flame retardant polyester compositions for calendering

Polyester compositions that provide a higher throughput in calendering processes may be prepared from a polyester having crystallization half time of at least 5 minutes, an inherent viscosity of about 0.55 to about 0.75 dL/g, a branching monomer, and a release additive. The polyester compositions show a combination of excellent melt strength with good shear response that permits higher calendering line speeds before melt fracture occurs. Also disclosed are processes for film or sheet by calendering the above compositions and the film or sheet produced therefrom. The polyester compositions, film, or sheet also may include plasticizers and/or flame retardants to increase their flexibility and enable their use in commercial applications requiring flame resistance. The film and sheet have excellent appearance and can be used in a wide range of decorative and packaging applications.

Polyester compositions for calendering

In a process for producing a profile by profile extrusion, a melt of a polyester composition is extruded through a die to form a profile. The processability of the polyester composition is improved by the addition of a branching agent, which provides increased melt strength and increased high shear thinning. The polyester composition has an inherent viscosity of at least 0.65 dl/g. The diacid component of the polyester composition has from 100 to 98.0 mole percent of residues of a primary acid selected from terephthalic acid, naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, isophthalic acid and mixtures thereof. The glycol component of the polyester composition has from 100 to 98.0 mole percent of residues of a primary glycol selected from ethylene glycol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, diethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, and mixtures thereof. The polyester composition has from 0.05 to 2.0 mole percent of residues of the branching agent selected from an acidic branching agent with a tri-functional or greater monomer, an alcoholic branching agent with a tri-functional or greater monomer, and mixtures thereof. The branching agent is present as part of either the diacid component or glycol component depending on whether the functionality is acidic or alcoholic, respectively.

Process for profile extrusion of a polyester

This application discloses amber colored polyesters suitable for packaging food and beverages. The amber polyester compositions provide excellent blockage of UV and visible light over the wavelength ranges of from about 320-550 nm, rendering them suitable for packaging materials sensitive to ultraviolet and visible light over this wavelength range, particularly beer.

Amber polyester compositions and container articles produced therefrom

A pigment composition includes a crystalline thermoplastic polyester resin having residues of at least one dicarboxylic acid and a near-infrared fluorescing compound having a fluorescence between about 650 nm to about 2500 nm associated with the crystalline thermoplastic polyester, wherein the polyester has an intrinsic viscosity (IV) of less than about 0.37. A preferred polyester is polybutylene terephthalate. Another aspect is a method for providing a detectable or identifiable marking that is invisible to the unaided eye on a surface of a substrate is also provided. The method includes the steps of applying to the surface a marking composition comprising a suitably compatible marking fluid containing the fluorescent pigment composition. The near infrared fluorescing pigment composition is useful in letterpress, flexographic and gravure printing applications.

Pigment particles for invisible marking applications

A process and apparatus for distributing molten thermoplastic material supplied directly from melt polymerization to a plurality of molding machines operating in timed sequence is disclosed. The invention is particularly applicable to transferring molten polyester (normally polyethylene terephthalate or a copolymer thereof) directly from a melt polymerization reactor to injection molding machines for producing molded plastic articles.
