Treated surfactant composition containing a water-soluble surfactant and exhibiting improved taste, said composition comprising: a water-soluble surfactant selected from alkyl phosphate surfactants, alkyl phosphate ethoxylated surfactants, betaine surfactants, betaine ethoxylated surfactants, amine oxide surfactants, and mixtures thereof and water; wherein the composition further comprises: less than about 4%, by weight of the water-soluble surfactant, of total undesirable non-polar materials; less than about 2.5%, by weight of the water-soluble surfactant, of alcohols having a carbon chain length of greater than 4; less than about 1%, by weight of the water-soluble surfactant, of amine and amide materials; and less than about 1%, by weight of the water-soluble surfactant, undesirable non-polar materials selected from aldehydes, esters, ketones, and organic acids. Such compositions wherein the compositions have been subjected to liquid-liquid extraction processes.

Water soluble surfactant composition having improved taste

Compositions useful in liquid-liquid extraction processes for improving the taste of water-soluble surfactants, said composition comprising: from about 5% to about 60%, by weight of the composition, of water soluble surfactant; from about 10% to about 90%, by weight of the composition, of water; from about 10% to about 90%, by weight of the composition, of extraction solvent; at least 0.01%, by weight of the composition, of undesirable non-polar materials; wherein the extraction solvent is selected from solvents having individual Hansen solubility parameters of a dispersion force component (&#x3b4;) ranging from about 15 to about 17 (MPa), a polar component (&#x3b4;) ranging from 0 to about 9 (MPa)and a hydrogen bonding component (&#x3b4;) ranging from 0 to about 11 (MPa).

Liquid-liquid extraction composition useful in processing water-soluble surfactants

The present invention relates to flavor oils including mint-, fruit- and spice-type flavors that are specially processed to substantially eliminate low-molecular weight sulfur compounds, in particular dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which has been found to be the main precursor of malodorous species such as dimethyl sulfide and methyl mercaptan. These malodorous species are produced via oxidation-reduction reactions involving such sulfur-containing compounds present in flavor oils. A preferred processing method is an aqueous-washing process, which has advantages of being simple, inexpensive and easy to implement while importantly avoiding the problems of typical processes including non-selective removal of desirable components and subjecting the flavor oils to extreme conditions that may destroy other components and result in undesirable changes in flavor or odor character. Other processing methods to selectively remove non-desired components include (1) distillation to remove polar low boiling point components, (2) filtration through adsorbents selective for sulfur compounds, (3) countercurrent extraction and (4) column chromatography. The processing methods may optionally be followed by reengineering to add back desired components that may have been removed or altered during the processing. The specially processed flavor oils are particularly useful in oral care compositions comprising components with chemical reducing capability such as stannous ions, which react with the sulfur-containing compounds to produce malodorous products.

Processes for improving the taste of water-soluble surfactants using liquid-liquid solvent extraction, said process comprising the steps of: providing a water-soluble surfactant composition in need of treatment wherein said water-soluble surfactant composition comprises a water-soluble surfactant and one or more undesirable non-polar materials; contacting said water-soluble surfactant composition with an extraction solvent and water to form an extraction mixture comprising an aqueous phase and a solvent phase; and separating the aqueous phase from the solvent phase; wherein the extraction solvent is selected from solvents having individual Hansen solubility parameters of a dispersion force component (&#x3b4;) ranging from about 15 to about 17 (MPa), a polar component (&#x3b4;) ranging from 0 to about 9 (MPa)and a hydrogen bonding component (&#x3b4;) ranging from 0 to about 11 (MPa). Treated water-soluble surfactant compositions produced by such processes and oral care compositions containing such treated water-soluble surfactant compositions.

Process for surfactant taste and/or odor improvement

Processes for preparing an oral care composition having improved taste, color, odor and/or clarity, wherein said processes comprise the steps of: providing an unfiltered dentifrice component selected from unfiltered alkyl phosphate surfactants, alkyl phosphate ethoxylated surfactants, lauryl sulfate surfactants, betaine surfactants, antibacterial agents, cetyl pyridinium chloride, metal Salts, phytic acids, or mixtures thereof; filtering the unfiltered dentifrice component with an adsorbent to form a filtered dentifrice component; and incorporating the filtered dentifrice component into the oral care composition. In one such process, activated carbon with a median particle size of less than or equal to about 30 &#x3bc;m, optionally a macro-mesoporous:microporous ratio about 0.9 or higher and optionally a BET per Total Volume of equal to or less than about 1600 m^2/g, has been found to remove undesirable contaminants from oral care dentifrice components, such as alkyl phosphate surfactant, alkyl phosphate ethoxylated surfactant, lauryl sulfate surfactant, betaine surfactants, antibacterial agents, cetyl pyridinium chloride, metal salts, or phytic acid.

Process for making improved oral compositions

The present invention relates to oral care compositions comprising stannous ions, a mint-type flavor oil, a protectant component that prevents generation of off odor and off taste in the composition, and orally acceptable carriers. The mint-type oils include peppermint, spearmint and corn mint. Suitable protectant components include copper salts and carbonyl compounds such as ascorbic acid; cis-jasmone; 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H)-furanone; 5-ethyl-3-hydroxy-4-methyl-2(5H)-furanone; vanillin; ethyl vanillin; anisaldehyde; 3,4-methylenedioxybenzaldehyde; 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde; 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde; 2-methyoxybenzaldehyde; 4-methoxybenzaldehyde; benzaldehyde; cinnamaldehyde (3-phenyl-2-propenal); hexyl cinnamaldehyde; &#x3b1;-methyl cinnamaldehyde; ortho-methoxy cinnamaldehyde; &#x3b1;-amyl cinnamaldehyde; and combinations thereof. The oral care composition may be a dentifrice.
