Described are a notch antenna and an array antenna based on a low profile stripline feed. The notch antenna includes a planar dielectric substrate having upper and lower surfaces. Each surface has a conductive layer with an opening therein. A notch antenna element is disposed on the conductive layer of the upper surface at the opening. A stripline embedded in the planar dielectric substrate extends under the notch antenna element. The stripline is adapted to couple an RF signal between the stripline and the notch antenna element. A conductive via is electrically coupled to the stripline and extends from the stripline to the opening in the conductive layer on the lower surface so that the RF signal is accessible at the lower surface.

A single six-port device which can be used to excite antenna elements in dual polarization mode. It can replace more complex feed arrangements containing up to three separate components. One version of the six port device is made up of a network of transmission lines connected in parallel. Another six-port device implementation is a network of transmission lines connected in series. Both versions can feed antenna elements to simultaneously transmit/receive dual orthogonal linear or circular polarizations.

A compact, modular limited-scan phased array is disclosed. The entire array, combining the feed and the radiating elements, is fabricated as a multilayer, planar substrate structure, with vias incorporated as layer interconnects. Furthermore, the desired degree of control over the array pattern can be exercised by inclusion of additional feed circuit layers. The feed can be used in systems requiring limited scan in one of the principal scan planes and wide-angle scan in the other plane, as well as in phased arrays with limited field-of-view in both principal scan planes. The planar circuit implementation of the array makes in inherently amenable to integration with state-of-the-art solid-state active components.

The present invention is a compact, multiplanar magic-T junction that generally consists of four planar waveguides and/or planar transmission lines, with at least one planar waveguide or planar transmission line residing in a different circuit layer from the other planar waveguides and/or transmission lines. Each planar waveguide and planar transmission line in the multiplanar magic-T junction is electromagnetically connected to an input/output feeding port with which it communicates. The ground planes common to the planar transmission lines and/or planar waveguides in the magic-T junction contain a coupling aperture. The planar waveguides and planar transmission lines which are on different sides of the common ground planes of the magic-T junction communicate electromagnetically through this coupling aperture.
