A modified elastomeric glove is disclosed having a lubricous coating made up of polyvinyl alcohol and a thickening agent. The thickening agent is initially added in order to increase the processability of the polyvinyl alcohol coating in order to prevent runbacks and drips during the manufacturing process. A hydroscopic thickener may be used. The polyvinyl alcohol coating becomes lubricous when wetted in a water bath and therefore becomes particularly useful in applying a water-activated resin casting material for forming orthopaedic casting bandages.

A novel shoe cover for medical uses comprises a one piece unit of thin elastomeric material having a pair of side panels in substantially parallel relation to each other. Each of the side panels has a foot shaped portion, an ankle shaped portion and an outer perimetric edge. A bead shaped perimetric section joins the two side panels at their respective perimetric edges, except at an upper edge of the ankle portions. A traction enhancing embossed pattern is formed on a lower portion of the foot shaped portion of the side panels. A novel method for forming the shoe cover comprises providing a shoe cover form which has substantially parallel lateral sides and a peripheral edge thereabout, which comprises a foot forming portion and an ankle forming portion, which has recesses covering substantially all of the foot forming portion of the first and second sides, and which has a textured surface on a lower portion of the foot forming portion. The method further comprises dipping the form into a solution of coagulant, drying the coagulant, dipping the form into a liquid elastomer preparation, drying the elastomer, and removing the shoe cover from the form.

A method for forming a glove in an elastomer deposition process employs a folded glove form. The form has a hand forming portion having palm and finger forming portions. The finger forming portions terminate in distal tips and the cuff forming portion terminates in a terminal end for forming the cuff opening. The form is folded so that finger forming portion distal tips and the cuff forming portion terminal end lie in separate planes and in facing relationship to one another. To form the glove, the form is vertically oriented and dipped into a bath of elastomer with both the cuff forming portion terminal end and the finger portion distal tips facing upwards.

Lubricous gloves and method for making lubricous gloves

A process for making medical gloves whose fingers have thinner walls than the rest of the gloves involves first depositing onto a hand-shaped glove form a layer of coagulant that comprises an ionic metal salt, then depositing an elastomeric layer. Part of the coated form is then leeched of metal ions in the coating, and the form is overcoated with a second elastomeric layer. The overcoated layer is thinner in the part where it overlies the leeched coating. The gloves find particular usefulness in delicate operations such as those performed by ophthalmologists.

Thin-fingered medical glove

A process for making powder-free medical gloves that are nevertheless easy to don involves first forming a glove on a form by successively dip-coating layers of a coagulant containing acid-soluble powder dispersed throughout, an elastomer, and an antiblocking composition with particles distributed throughout. After curing the elastomer and applying a silicone coating, the glove is removed from the form and treated successively with acid, to dissolve the powder, and with bleach, to reduce blocking. Using this process, high quality natural rubber medical gloves can be produced.
