A system and method is disclosed for detecting anomalies in an additively manufactured part. An energy source generates a signal forming an optical beam for creating a melt pool in a layer of feedstock material being selectively fused to make a part in an additive manufacturing operation. A sensor is configured to receive a signal reflected from the melt pool. The reflected signal forms a thermal signal indicative of a temperature of the feedstock material at a known location on a layer of the feedstock material while the feedstock material is being fused at the known location. A controller receives and analyzes data relating to the received signal to determine if an anomaly exists at the known location.

System and method for in situ inspection of defects in additively manufactured parts using high speed melt pool pyrometry

The present disclosure relates to an additive manufacturing system for forming a part using a powder material. In one embodiment the system makes use of a primary heat generating subsystem to generate a fusing beam for heating and fusing at least one of select portions of a powder layer, or an entire area of a powder layer, deposited on a build plate. The system also incorporates a beam steering subsystem for steering the fusing beam over the powder layer. A supplemental heating subsystem is used to generate a wide area beam to heat a portion of the powder layer either prior to fusing, along with the fusing operation, or subsequent to fusing of the powder with the fusing beam. The wide area beam has an intensity which is insufficient to fuse the powder, and alters a microstructure of the powder layer as the powder layer is at least one of fused or as it cools, to thus relieve stress in the part.

A nanofluid laser entrainment additive manufacturing apparatus, system and method including a substrate, a dilute nanofluid of inert gas suspended nanoparticles on the substrate, a focused energy beam that irradiates the nanoparticles to selectively melt the nanoparticles, and a raster system that raster scans the focused energy beam across the inert gas suspended nanoparticles to create predetermined shapes by additive manufacturing.

The present disclosure relates to a laser based system for laser peening a workpiece. The system has a pulse laser configured to generate laser pulses and a controller for controlling operation of the pulse laser. The controller is further configured to control the pulse laser to cause the pulse laser to generate at least one of the laser pulses with a spatio-temporally varying laser fluence over a duration of the at least one of the laser pulses.

An optical inspection system for detecting sub-micron features on a sample component. The system may have a controller, a camera responsive to the controller for capturing images, an objective lens able to capture submicron scale features on the sample component, and a pulsed light source. The pulsed light source may be used to generate light pulses. The camera may be controlled to acquire images, using the objective lens, only while the pulsed light source is providing light pulses illuminating a portion of the sample component. Relative movement between the sample component and the objective lens is provided to enable at least one of a desired subportion or an entirety of the sample component to be scanned with the camera.

In the additive manufacturing process, a monitored or controlled mixture of materials is deposited to form an additive manufactured product by delivering the mixture of materials through a material flow path while using an excitation source to introduce electromagnetic energy into the material flow path using a circuit element having inductive or capacitive reactance disposed adjacent the material ejecting orifice. The excitation source produces an electromagnetic field condition within the material flow path that is responsive to at least one of the permeability and permittivity properties of a space within the material flow path. A sensing means coupled electrically or magnetically to the excitation means is responsive to the electromagnetic field condition and provides at least one control parameter based on the electromagnetic field condition that may be used to control the composition of the mixture of materials by adjusting proportions of constituent materials.

Additive manufacturing power map to mitigate defects

The present disclosure relates to a system for forming a material layer that may make use of an optical light source for generating an optical beam, and a beam shaping subsystem configured to shape the optical beam to generate a complex beam intensity profile. The complex shaped beam may be used to selectively melt at least portions of a bed of powder particles residing on a substrate during formation of the material layer, as the optical light source is moved. A computer may be used to control the optical light source. The complex beam intensity profile enables control over the microstructure of grains formed during melting of the powder particles as the material layer is formed.

System and method for grain refinement and general control of grain morphology in laser additive manufacturing

The present disclosure relates to a powdered bed fusion additive manufacturing (PBFAM) apparatus. The apparatus uses a container for holding a quantity of powdered material. The container has a bottom wall for supporting the powdered material, wherein the bottom wall is made from the same material as the powdered material. A temperature sensing subsystem is coupled to a portion of the container for detecting a temperature of the container. A laser generates an optical beam directed at the powdered material held by the container for melting the powdered material. A controller receives temperature information from the temperature sensing subsystem and determines an absorptivity of the powdered material based on the temperature information.

The present disclosure relates to an apparatus for simulating a black body spectrum. The apparatus makes use of a broadband light source and a light guide configured to receive light generated by the light source and to generate first and second optical signals. A first signal processing subsystem may be used to enable adjustment of both a signal spectrum and an intensity of the first optical signal. A second signal processing subsystem may be used to enable adjustment of both a signal spectrum and an intensity of the second optical signal. A beam cube may be used to combine the first and second optical signals to produce a final light output signal having a desired signal spectrum and a desired intensity.
