A method may be utilized to control a steer-by-wire steering system for a motor vehicle that includes an electronically controllable steering actuator that acts on steered wheels, a control unit, a feedback actuator to which a driver's request for a steering angle can be applied by a driver via steering input means and which outputs a feedback signal to the steering input means as a reaction to the driver's request and a driving condition of the motor vehicle, and a signal transmission that transmits the driver's request to the control unit. The control unit controls the steering actuator to convert the driver's request into deflection of the steered wheels. The method may involve determining wheel slip of a front wheel, performing frequency analysis of a profile over time of a wheel slip signal of the front wheel, and determining the feedback signal based on the result of the frequency analysis.

Method for determining a steering sensation of a steer-by-wire steering system

A method can be used to adapt a steering torque for controlling a feedback actuator of a steer-by-wire motor vehicle steering system. The method may involve providing a basic steering torque, providing a rack-force-based steering torque, determining a difference between the basic steering torque and the rack-force-based steering torque, and if the difference exceeds a predetermined limit value adapting the basic steering torque to the rack-force-based steering torque and transmitting a resulting steering torque to control the feedback actuator. However, if the difference remains below the predetermined limit value, then the method may involve transmitting the basic steering torque to control the feedback actuator.

Methods for controlling a steer-by-wire steering system including a steering actuator controlled via a steering request and brings about movement of a steering rack to steer vehicle wheels. A feedback actuator transmits reactions of the road to a steering wheel via an aligning torque. A setpoint position of the steering rack is determined in a signal processing unit based on a steering wheel steering angle. The setpoint position is transmitted with an actual position of the steering rack or with a measured wheel steering angle as an actual value to a control unit which calculates a setpoint torque of an electric motor of the steering actuator. The method includes monitoring the power of the motor required to reach the determined setpoint position. When the required power exceeds the maximum power of the motor the motor is operated at maximum power torque present at the steering wheel is increased.

Method for controlling a steer-by-wire steering system when a maximum available power level of the steering actuator is reached

A method of controlling a steer-by-wire steering system for motor vehicles is disclosed for the calculation of a resulting self-aligning torque of a feedback actuator in a manner which is dependent on an operating state (hands-on/hands-off). The method includes determining of a base self-aligning torque for a first operating state, in which there is hand contact by a driver on a steering wheel, determining a hands-off self-aligning torque for a second operating state, in which there is no hand contact by the driver on the steering wheel, determining a self-aligning speed of the steering wheel for the first operating state and for the second operating state, and determining the resulting self-aligning torque on the basis of the base self-aligning torque or the hands-off self-aligning torque, as a result of which the steering wheel rotates at the defined self-aligning speed into the defined position.

Method for controlling a steer-by-wire steering system with an active return function

A steer-by-wire steering system may include a steering adjuster that is electronically controlled depending on driver input, a feedback actuator transmitting feedback from a road, and a control unit that actuates the feedback actuator and the steering adjuster. The control unit comprises an estimator including a monitor and a model of the feedback actuator. The estimator may estimate a driver's steering torque based on measurement values of the feedback actuator and with the model and the monitor, then providing the driver's steering torque as a result. The control unit further comprises a filter unit that analyzes the measurement values of the feedback actuator by determining the damping of amplitudes of predetermined frequency ranges and to provide the result. The control unit further comprises a decision unit that decides whether a driver's hand is in contact with a steering wheel by using the results of the filter unit and the estimator.
