An apparatus and method for activating an operational mode for a portable intelligent communications device when a user thereof is engaged in a meeting. The operational mode includes various settings of the portable intelligent communications device configured therefor with such settings being activated upon initiation of the meeting. The operational mode is then deactivated upon completion of the meeting. Both activation and deactivation of the operational mode may be accomplished either automatically or manually. In either case, the settings for the operational mode are configured via a graphical user interface on a display screen of the portable intelligent communications device.

A method for processing information using a personal digital assistant utilizes a standardized status bar manager (&ldquo;SBM&rdquo;) and status bar interfaces. All applications and the operating system's launch pad support the status bar which can be uniformly used to both show and interact with status bar messages. The SBM links together all of the status bar areas of all applications (and the operating system launch pad as well) whenever necessary. The present invention routes global status messages corresponding to incoming events to each status bar of every active application. The SBM also routes all messages to the status bar, regardless whether the message requires an action by the user or is for information only. Minimized applications are displayed on and launched from a status bar of an active application without having to first access the operating system launch pad. Finally, the SBM creates an unanswered telephone call list that includes a reason code explaining why the call went unanswered.

Method of processing information using a personal communication assistant

A messaging application is provided for use in a user communications device having a processor controlling a display and a user input device, and a communications terminal for transmitting and receiving a plurality of different types of electronic messages. The messaging application includes a mail provider program operated by the processor. The mail provider program includes a mail provider module for automatically controlling the transmittal and/or receipt of electronic messages by a user accessing the display and the user input device, a mail source module operatively associated with the mail provider module for receiving of electronic messages including a plurality of mail source protocols each associated with a different mail service provider, and a mail sink module operatively associated with the mail provider module for transmitting of electronic messages including a plurality of mail sink protocols each associated with a different mail service provider. The mail source module selecting one of the mail source protocols for controlling the receipt of incoming electronic mail messages to the mail provider module based on the mail service provider from which the electronic message is received. The mail sink module selecting one of the mail sink protocols for controlling the transmission of the outgoing electronic message from the mail provider module based on select criteria.

A user operating system is provided for use in a user communications device having a processor controlling a display and a user input device, the processor operating plural application programs each using data files formatted to the particular application program, and a communications terminal for sending and receiving a plurality of different types of electronic mail including such formatted data files. The user operating system includes a messaging application operating in the processor for congruently categorizing electronic mail received at the user communications device based upon the type of electronic mail received. A mail module is operated by the processor to send and receive electronic mail via the communications terminal. A file module, operably associated with the mail module, defines plural directories for storing data files, the data files in any such directory being of a preselect format, and directly stores electronic mail received by the mail module as data files in select ones of the directories based upon the type of electronic mail received.

The method includes the steps of determining a current geographical location for the portable intelligent communications device or setting a default location therefor, determining a geographical location for a party with whom the portable intelligent communications device is currently having an active voice conversation or with whom the portable intelligent communications device most recently had an active voice conversation, and integrating the geographical location information determined to automatically configure the settings of the software application.

An apparatus and method of automatically handling initiation of a call by a portable intelligent communications device to a designated recipient, including the steps of determining local time for the designated recipient and determining from the local time whether to permit initiation of the call to the designated recipient. The method also includes the steps of storing time zone information for the designated recipient and calculating from the designated recipient time zone information the local time. Additionally, the method will include the steps of storing at least one phone number for the designated recipient, storing a time range during which said designated recipient may be called at each phone number, and comparing the local time of the designated recipient to the stored time range. If the local time for the designated recipient falls within the time range for one of the stored phone numbers, the call is permitted to be initiated to the designated recipient by the portable intelligent communications device; otherwise, a message is indicated when the local time of the designated recipient is outside the time range for all the designated recipient phone numbers.

A method and apparatus for visually monitoring the status of a phone call initiated by a portable intelligent communications device including the steps of displaying a graphical image on a display screen of the portable intelligent communications device and depicting on the graphical image a current status of the phone call. The graphical image is a geographical map and the method further includes the steps of depicting a current location of the portable intelligent communications device on the graphical image, depicting the destination location of the phone call on the graphical image, and depicting progressive connection of the phone call to a destination location on the graphical image. Additionally, the method may also include the steps of depicting one of the portable intelligent communications device location and the destination location as a disconnecting location for the phone call on the graphical image, depicting progressive disconnection of the phone call from the disconnecting location to the other location, and depicting the other location as being disconnected from the phone call. Color coding may be utilized to distinguish between when the phone call is either connected or disconnected at the portable intelligent communications device location and the destination location.
