Methods and systems for thinning the output of an array antenna are disclosed. The thinning can be applied in response to determining that the performance of a multiple element antenna array with respect to a desired signal has been compromised by the presence of one or more interfering signals. The application of a thinning pattern has the effect of turning off selected antenna elements within the array. The effect of applying a particular thinning pattern on the realized performance of the antenna system can be determined. An alternate thinning pattern can be applied if the previous thinning pattern did not result in an improvement, or a sufficient improvement, in the performance of the antenna system.

Dynamic thinning of a phased array aperture

An electron tunneling device includes a first non-insulating strip and a second non-insulating strip spaced apart from one another such that first and second end portions, respectively, of the first and second non-insulating strips cooperate to form an antenna having an antenna impedance. The first and second non-insulating strips include a transition region that extends from the antenna to a tunneling region in which the first and second non-insulating strips are in a confronting relationship. An arrangement cooperates with a portion of each of the first and second non-insulating strips in the tunneling region to form an electron tunneling structure exhibiting a tunneling region impedance. The transition region is configured to match the antenna impedance to the tunneling region impedance. The transition region can provide for changing an electromagnetic field orientation between the antenna and the tunneling region.

Transition region for use with an antenna-integrated electron tunneling device and method

An antenna arrangement is described in which a pair of at least generally planar opposing antenna arms each support a first high frequency antenna current responsive to an input. Each arm includes a peripheral outline for confining the first high frequency current to a pair of first and second dominant paths, that are defined by the peripheral outline, in a spaced apart relationship across each of the opposing antenna arms so as to define an isolated area between the first and second paths. A configuration is located in this area of at least one of the antenna arms for producing an additional high frequency current responsive to the input. The additional high frequency current cooperates with the first high frequency antenna current to produce an overall antenna response. In one feature, the opposing antenna arms are bow arms which cooperate to define an overall bow-tie configuration as the peripheral outline.

Planar antenna with supplemental antenna current configuration arranged between dominant current paths

An assembly includes a device for receiving at least one input to produce an output. An antenna supports the device to transfer the input to the device and further to transfer the output from the device such that the antenna supports a selected one of the input and the output as a high frequency current. The antenna includes a peripheral configuration which confines high frequency current to at least one dominant path to oscillate therein. The other one of the input and the output is a lower frequency signal present at least generally throughout the antenna. At least one port is positioned away from the dominant path to isolate the lower frequency signal from high frequency current in the dominant path. The antenna is configured to support the lower frequency signal having a frequency in a low frequency range including zero to several terahertz.

Terahertz device integrated antenna for use in resonant and non-resonant modes and method

An assembly includes a device for receiving at least one input to produce an output. An antenna arrangement supports the device to transfer the input to the device and further to transfer the output from the device such that the antenna arrangement supports a selected one of the input and the output as a high frequency current. The antenna includes a peripheral configuration which confines high frequency current to at least one dominant path to oscillate in the dominant path and the other one of the input and the output is a lower frequency signal present at least generally throughout the antenna arrangement. At least one port is positioned sufficiently away from the dominant path to isolate the lower frequency signal from surface current in the dominant path. The assembly is usable in modulation, emitting, mixing and detection modes and may include a resonant or non-resonant configuration.
