An exhaust device () for a vehicle is provided. The exhaust device () includes an outer shell (), an inlet () to receive exhaust gases, an outlet (), an inner shell () received within the outer shell (), a pair of partition walls () and a Helmholtz neck (). The inner shell () defines an inner volume (). A plurality of first circumferential openings () extending through the inner shell () fluidly communicates the inlet () with the inner volume (). A plurality of second circumferential openings () extending through the inner shell () fluidly communicates the outlet () with the inner volume (). The pair of partition walls () is disposed between the inner shell () and the outer shell (). The pair of partition walls (), the inner shell () and the outer shell () define a Helmholtz chamber () therebetween. The partition walls () seal the Helmholtz chamber () from the inlet () and the outlet (). The Helmholtz neck () is disposed on the inner shell () or one of the pair of partition walls ().

Exhaust device

A mixer assembly for mixing an injected reductant with an exhaust gas output from a combustion engine comprises a mixer housing including a wall defining an exhaust passageway having a longitudinal axis. A tubular swirling device housing extends along a first axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis. The tubular swirling device includes a plurality of openings through which exhaust gas enters. The exhaust gas within the tubular swirling device swirls about the first axis and exits at an outlet end of the tubular swirling device. A mixing plate is positioned immediately downstream of the tubular swirling device. The mixing plate swirls the exhaust about a second axis extending parallel to the longitudinal axis.

Exhaust aftertreatment system having mixer assembly

An aftertreatment system may include an exhaust gas passageway and a mixer assembly. The exhaust gas passageway may receive exhaust gas from an engine. The mixer assembly is disposed within the exhaust gas passageway and may include an upstream baffle, a downstream baffle, and a tube extending between and connected to the upstream and downstream baffles. The tube may include an inner surface defining a first flow path through the mixer assembly. The upstream and downstream baffles may be attached to each other, the tube and the exhaust gas passageway. The upstream and downstream baffles may cooperate to define a second flow path through the mixer assembly. The second flow path may extend in a rotational direction around an outer surface of the tube.

Counter-swirl mixer

A mixing system for an exhaust system includes a first mixing device having a plurality of first auger blades and an inlet having a first cross-sectional area. A second mixing device is separate and downstream from the first mixing device and includes a second auger blade. The second mixing device includes an inlet having a second cross-sectional area greater than the first cross-sectional area. A flow path longitudinal centerline of the first mixing device extends at an angle to a flow path longitudinal centerline of the second mixing device. A flow path longitudinal centerline of the first mixing device intersects the second auger blade. The first mixing device is disposed within a first portion of an exhaust pipe and the second mixing device is disposed in a second portion of the exhaust pipe. The second portion has a larger cross-sectional area than the first portion.

Dual auger mixing system

A mixer assembly for treating exhaust with an injected reductant as the exhaust flows through an exhaust gas passageway includes a tubular shell and a rod. A first end and a second opposite end of the rod are fixed to the shell. The rod has a serpentine shape with a plurality of parallel extending portions interconnected by curved portions. The curved portions are positioned proximate an inner surface of the shell such that the rod traverses the exhaust passageway. The mixer assembly is positioned such that the rod is directly impinged by reductant injected into the exhaust gas passageway.

Impingement mixer for exhaust treatment

A mixing system for an exhaust aftertreatment system includes a first mixing device having a plurality of first auger blades and an inlet having a first cross-sectional area. A second mixing device is separate and downstream from the first mixing device and includes a second auger blade. The second mixing device includes an inlet having a second cross-sectional area greater than the first cross-sectional area. A plurality of flow paths created by the first mixing device are recombined into a single flow path between the first and second mixing devices. A longitudinal center line of the first mixing device is offset from a longitudinal center line of the second mixing device.

A mixer assembly for mixing an injected reductant with an exhaust gas output from a combustion engine comprises a mixer housing including a wall defining an exhaust passageway having a longitudinal axis. A tubular swirling device housing extends along a first axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis. The tubular swirling device includes a plurality of openings through which exhaust gas enters. The exhaust gas within the tubular swirling device swirls about the first axis and exits at an outlet end of the tubular swirling device. A mixing plate is positioned immediately downstream of the tubular swirling device and includes apertures through which the exhaust gas exiting the outlet end of the tubular swirling device flows. The mixing plate swirls the exhaust about a second axis extending parallel to the longitudinal axis.

A mixer for mixing an exhaust flow in an exhaust pipe includes a tubular housing having a first end, a second end and a center portion positioned between the ends. The center portion has a reduced size in relation to at least one of the first and second ends. The housing includes circumferentially spaced apart apertures extending through the center portion. A mixing element includes a body having a first peripheral portion and a second peripheral portion. The first peripheral portion is fixed to the center portion at a location adjacent to one of the apertures. The second peripheral portion is fixed to the center portion at a location adjacent to another one of the apertures.

Exhaust gas flow mixer

An exhaust gas treatment system for reducing emissions from an engine includes an exhaust conduit adapted to supply an exhaust stream from the engine to an exhaust treatment device. An injector injects a reagent through an aperture in the conduit into the exhaust stream. A flow modifier is positioned within the exhaust conduit and comprises a plate including a plurality of bores spaced apart from one another and positioned about a periphery of the plate. The plate also includes a plurality of slots positioned in parallel with each other.

In-line flow diverter

An exhaust after-treatment system for treating an exhaust produced by an engine, including an exhaust passage in communication with the engine; an injector for dosing an exhaust treatment fluid into the exhaust passage, a mixing device positioned downstream from the injector, the mixing device operable to intermingle the exhaust treatment fluid and the exhaust; an irregularly-shaped exhaust treatment substrate positioned downstream from the mixing device; and a dispersion device positioned between the mixing device and the irregularly-shaped exhaust treatment substrate. The dispersion device includes a plurality of dispersion members each being operable to direct an exhaust stream flowing through the dispersion device into a plurality of different directions to disperse the exhaust flow over substantially an entire surface of the irregularly-shaped exhaust treatment substrate.

Exhaust gas flow distribution system

An aftertreatment system may include an exhaust pipe and a mixing pipe. The exhaust pipe receives exhaust gas from an engine. The mixing pipe is disposed in the exhaust pipe and may include a tubular portion and a plurality of blades extending from a longitudinal end of the tubular portion. The tubular portion may include a plurality of openings extending through inner and outer diametrical surfaces of the tubular portion. The tubular portion and the plurality of blades may define an integrally formed unitary body.

Perforated mixing pipe with swirler

An aftertreatment system may include an exhaust pipe and a mixing pipe. The exhaust pipe may receive exhaust gas from an engine and may include a first portion defining a first longitudinal axis and a second portion defining a second longitudinal axis that is angled relative to the first axis. The mixing pipe may be disposed in the exhaust pipe and may include a tubular portion and a collar extending radially outward from the tubular portion. The tubular portion may include a plurality of openings and a plurality of deflectors. The plurality of openings may extend through inner and outer diametrical surfaces of the tubular portion. Each of the plurality of deflectors may be disposed adjacent a corresponding one of the plurality of openings.

An exhaust treatment component including a mixing assembly located within a housing. The mixing assembly includes a decomposition tube having a first end and a second end, the first end being configured to receive the exhaust from the inlet and being configured to receive a reagent exhaust treatment fluid; a flow reversing device disposed proximate the second end, the flow reversing device configured to direct a mixture of the exhaust and reagent exhaust treatment fluid as the mixture exits the second end of the decomposition tube in a direction back toward the first end, the flow reversing device including a plurality of deflecting members for swirling and intermixing the exhaust and reagent exhaust treatment fluid; and a swirl arrester device configured to eliminate the swirling of the exhaust and reagent exhaust treatment fluid after exiting the flow reversing device.

Exhaust mixing assembly

A swirl device for intermixing a reagent exhaust treatment fluid and an exhaust produced by an engine. The swirl device includes a cylindrical tube defining an inlet for receipt of the reagent exhaust treatment fluid and the exhaust, and a swirl member attached to the cylindrical tube. The swirl member conically expands outward from the cylindrical tube and includes a plurality of tabs separated by elongate slots. The plurality of tabs are configured to swirl and intermingle the reagent exhaust treatment fluid and the exhaust.
