A unique method and apparatus automatically switches between a voice mode and a data mode in a wireless communication device. In particular, a communication device (200) adapted to voice and data signals monitors a data network for data traffic for a first predetermined period of time (506), then monitors a cellular control channel (516) for cellular traffic during a sleep mode of the data network before establishing normal cellular operation. The method and apparatus increases efficient use of channel capacity by selectively switching between systems during periods of nonuse. Finally, according to other novel aspects of the present invention, user prompts (606, 618) enable efficient use of a communication device capable of transmitting and receiving both voice and data.

When the telephone numbers are sequentially access, mneumonic information associated with each one of the telephone numbers is provided to a voice synthesizer to provide an aural indication of the telephone numbers stored within individual ones of the directory locations.

Each telephone number digit is detected and accumulated by microcomputer (508) and, after a pause of four seconds, the accumulated digits are sent via a data bus (511) to cellular telephone transceiver (519) for placing a telephone call. The call is subsequently terminated when the END key is activated or an END command is received by the cellular telephone transceiver (519). Thereafter, power to the cellular telephone transceiver (519) may be turned off in response to activation of the MEM-END key sequence.

A data communication system for use in the control and monitoring of mobile stations, for example, in a bus monitoring system, from a central station over a communication channel carrying both data and voice information. Information is encoded into digital messages having a start code followed by one or more data blocks. The start code identifies the beginning of the data block that follows and enables synchronization of clock circuitry to the received data frequency. The data blocks have N digital words with M binary bits where one word is a parity word and N-1 words are data words. Each of the data words has a data portion and parity portion coded for correction of at least one error. Reliability is enhanced by a data detector which discriminates between data and noise or voice to provide an indication of the presence of data. In transmitting the digital messages, the bits of the N words in each data block are interleaved to provide protection against error bursts.
