A copolymer of ethylene and hydrolysable silane includes from 0.1 wt % to 5.0 wt % hydrolysable silane groups and has a Mz(abs)/Mw(abs) of less than or equal to 9.5; a ratio of Mz(abs)/Mw(abs) to polydispersity of less than or equal to 1.5; a polydispersity of 6.6 or greater; a Density×Polydispersity of 6.0 or greater; or an Amorphous Content at Room Temperature×Polydispersity of 360 or greater. Methods for forming a moisture-crosslinkable polymer composition include forming a copolymer of ethylene and hydrolysable silane at a polymerization temperature of greater than or equal to 180° C. to less than or equal to 400° C. at a pressure from 5,000 psi to 50,000 psi; and adding a silanol condensation catalyst to the copolymer of ethylene and hydrolysable silane.

Articles made from a moisture-crosslinkable, polymeric composition comprising in weight percent based on the weight of the composition: (A) 10 to 99.99 wt % of a nonpolar ethylenic polymer grafted with silane functionality (Si-g-npPE), the npPE having the following properties before grafting: (1) a vinyl content of 0.2 to 0.7 per 1,000 carbon atoms, (2) a melt index of 1.5 to 7.0 dg/min, (3) a density of 0.913 to 0.965 g/cc, and (4) a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of equal to or less than 8; (B) 0.01 to 20 wt % of a silanol condensation catalyst; and (C) 0 to 70 wt % of a flame retardant additive; exhibit one or more of desirable (a) silane grafting efficiency; (b) hot creep performance as a cable jacket/insulation after moisture crosslinking; (c) retained dielectric strength after glancing impact as a moisture crosslinked cable construction; and (d) crush resistance as a moisture crosslinked cable construction.

Moisture-cured wire and cable constructions

The copolymerization of ethylene (E) and methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPEGMA) produces the copolymer co-E-MPEGMA. These copolymers are distinct from polyethylene, e.g., low density polyethylene (LDPE) grafted with MPEGMA, i.e., g-E-MPEGMA, and are useful in the preparation of insulation sheaths for medium, high and extra-high voltage cables. Such cables exhibit good water tree retardance.

The phenolic antioxidant has a phenol-based moiety fused with a cyclic ether where the oxygen atom of the cyclic ether is located in the para position relative to the hydroxyl group of the phenol-based moiety. The process for making extra high voltage cable insulation is improved by using a composition comprising in weight percent based on the weight of the composition: (A) 95 to 99.9% of an ethylene-based polymer; (B) 0.2 to 2.5% peroxide; (C) 0.01 to 0.5% of a sulfur-containing first antioxidant having at least one &#x2014;S(CH)COR group, wherein R is C6 to C20 alkyl; (D) 0.001 to 0.009%) of a sulfur-containing second antioxidant that does not contain a &#x2014;S(CH)COR group, wherein R is a C6 to C20 alkyl; (E) Optionally, an organic nitrogenous base; and (F) Optionally, a phenolic third antioxidant that does not contain a &#x2014;S(CH)COR group, wherein R is a C6 to C20 alkyl.
