Users access content using a variety of formats, where some formats provide stronger encryption or protections than others. Content transmitted over open protocols may expose content to unauthorized third parties or enable unauthorized use of the content. The content may be protected by converting the content to a set of instructions on a user device, where the instructions correlate characters to identifications and outlines of the characters with instructions for rendering the characters. Different segments of content may have different mappings between characters, identifications, and outlines to add time or resource use to attempts to reverse engineer the instructions.

Content protection for device rendering

Electronic content such as an electronic book (e-book) that is referenced in or otherwise related to other content such as website content is identified, and a visual representation of the electronic content is generated. The visual representation is presented in conjunction with the website content, and a reader application for previewing the electronic content is launched via user interaction with the visual representation. Exiting the reader application causes a browser application that is rendering the website content to be automatically returned to a foreground state. A variety of actions are enabled via interaction with the reader application such as purchasing the electronic content, sharing the electronic content, or downloading a sample preview of the electronic content for later consumption.

Previewing electronic content within third-party websites

Techniques are provided for selectively and dynamically determining one or more words of an electronic book to present with comprehension guides. For instance, an electronic device rendering an electronic book may determine whether to display some, all, or no words of the book with comprehension guides for words within the electronic book based on word difficulty, contextual importance or aspects of the user. Techniques are also provided for determining the content of comprehension guides to be presented with the words.

Previewing electronic book content within third-party websites

A metadata item may be generated that includes metadata content corresponding to a selected portion of digital content stored on a first device, the metadata item may be associated with a first user profile, and the metadata item may be distributed to a second user device storing the digital content such that the metadata item can be accessed via a second user profile and rendered on the second user device in association with the digital content. In this manner, metadata content corresponding to digital content may be shared across user profiles that access the digital content. In addition, a collaborative content item may be generated that includes collaborative content associated with a word or phrase in digital content and that is editable by multiple user profiles.

Disclosed are various embodiments for designing a network site. A grid layout component is provided in conjunction with a network page. The network page has at least one text element and at least one image element. The grid layout component has a plurality of cell configurations. Each cell configuration includes at least one text cell and at least one image cell. An indication is received from a user, indicating that one of the cell configurations is to be an initial cell configuration. In response to the user indication, the at least one text element and the at least one image element are displayed in a grid having the initial cell configuration. Layout code is generated which renders the grid, including the at least one text element and the at least one image element, within the network page for display by the browser.
