Novel 4-phenyl-1,3-benzodiazepines and 2-amino-.alpha.-phenylphenethylamines, novel intermediates thereof, and methods of preparing same are described. These benzodiazepines are useful as antidepressants, analgetics and anticonvulsants. The 2-amino-.alpha.-phenylphenethylamines are useful as anticonvulsant and neuroprotective agents.

These compounds are useful as antidepressants and anticonvulsants. Compounds 8-[2-(phenylmethyl)phenyl]-1,4-dioxaspiro[4,5]-decan-8-ol, 1-[2-(phenylmethyl)phenyl]-4-oxocyclohexanol, and 1-[2-(phenylmethyl)phenyl]-4-oxocyclohexanol oxime, and methods of preparing same are also described. These compounds are useful as intermediates for preparing the antidepressant and anticonvulsant compounds.
