An apparatus is described for providing an electrical conduction path between two contact locations rotatable one with respect to the other. A flat ribbon cable having a plurality of electrical conductors and being wound in the manner of a coiled spring, is connected to the contact locations by way of connection lines serially connected to the ends of the flat ribbon cable. To protect the flat ribbon cable from mechanical damage at each of its ends, an end portion of each of the electrical conductors is serially connected to an end portion of one of a plurality of connection conductors of the connection line at a connection location, and a connection assembly is formed about the end portions of the serially connected conductors. The connection assembly is comprised of a clamping body positioned about and engaging a portion of each of the connection conductors so as to restrict axial movement therebetween; and a protective sheath that encompasses the connection locations of each of the serially connected conductors, while engaging the clamping body to restrict axial movement therebetween.

A method is described for making an electrical through connection between a first insulated condution line including a flat electrical conductor to a second insulated electrical conduction line. An elongated connecting device including a plurality of transverse claws at one end, an attachment member at the other end, and a base member in between is employed in the steps of removing an end portion of the insulation layer on each of the conduction lines; placing the transverse claws adjacent to the first insulated conduction line and deforming the claws into the insulation layer thereof to achieve a fixed longitudinal retention, such deforming including the application of a force sufficient to cause claw penetration into only the insulation layer and not into the flat electrical conductor; bonding the exposed end portion of the flat electrical conductor to the base member for achieving an electrical connection thereto; and affixing the attachment member to the exposed end portion of the second conduction line for achieving an electrical connection thereto.

Method for making an electrical connection to a flat electrical conductor

Apparatus is described for providing an electrical conduction path between two contact locations rotatable one with respect to the other. A flat ribbon cable having at least two electrical conductors and being wound in the manner of a spring, is firmly attached at its respective ends to the contact locations. To protect the flat ribbon cable from kinking and mechanical damage at each of such ends, each end portion thereof is folded across an immediately adjacent portion and a stabilizer connection assembly is positioned to extend about both such portions. Each such assembly is comprised of a protective sheath of flexible insulating material positioned closely about the folded end portion; an angular attachment of molded insulating material, including a clamping segment and a ribbon-shaped, sheath segment extending at an angle one to the other; and a means for locking the clamping segment in a compressed condition.

A plug for female contacts is comprised of a control carrier member with hinged interlocking parts for sealingly gripping the inserted conductor ends of a cable. The interlocked parts and adjacent conductor portions are molded in a plastic body.
