The arrangement relates to a hot-film mass flow meter for recording the flow rate of a flowing medium in the intake tract or the charge air tract of an internal combustion engine. A substrate part is provided, that accommodates a sensor chip, which is allocated to a channel that has flowing through it at least one partial mass flow of the flowing medium. The sensor chip extends into channel that has flowing through it the partial mass flow of the flowing medium. The substrate part is formed either as a separately extruded plastic tongue or as a cavity extruded of plastic material. The sensor chip is integrated downstream with respect to a flow direction of the flowing medium, so as to lie behind a leading edge.

Since the two measurement methods react differently to interference effects, the comparison of the two output signals permits conclusions to be drawn as to the type and the order of magnitude of the interference effects and a corrected measurement signal can be obtained, which is independent of the interference effects.

Measurement accuracy may be improved by transmitting a reference signal that is a signal derived from the clock signal, and using this reference signal to correct the output signal.

A method for detecting a malfunction of a sensor measuring a measured quantity is provided, in which a signal-range check for the output signal of the sensor is performed, provided that the measured quantity is within a permissible range. If the measured quantity is outside the permissible range, no signal-range check is performed, but the output signal is used for detecting the measured quantity and for further calculations. The sensor may be, for example, a hot-film air-mass meter. If this is the case, the measured quantity is the drawn-in air mass, and the signal-range check is performed, provided that the engine operating state and thus the drawn-in air satisfies specifiable conditions. The invention relates to a device having a sensor carrier, which comprises a sheet-metal element and a plastic element and on which a measuring element introduced into the flowing medium is disposed. The use of plastic, which for the most part covers the sheet-metal element, means closer tolerances, which improve the performance of the sensor carrier both in terms of its facing into the flow and experiencing a flow around it, for instance by providing it with an improved aerodynamic leading edge, or the measuring element can be mounted flush to the surface and flush with edges of a sensor cavern, so that no turbulence occurs in the medium in the region of the measuring element or flow under the measuring element. The sensor region of the measuring element is reliably protected by recesses in the longitudinal edges and by a special adhesive bonding process from a gel emerging from the electronic evaluation circuit, so that the measuring characteristic curve behavior is not altered.

A loop controller preselects the quantity of exhaust gas to be recirculated on the basis of a setpoint and an actual value which characterizes the quantity of exhaust gas recirculated. A first measured value is determined in a first position (open) of the actuator, and a second measured value is determined in a second position (closed) of the actuator, with the actual value or a correction value being preselectable on the basis of the difference between the two measured values.
