A cone pulley transmission is disclosed which includes an infinitely actuatable and adjustable transmission wherein an axially displaceable cone pulley disc is adjustable by application of hydraulic tensioning so as to generate the pressure forces acting on a transmission belt rotating between the cone pulley discs, with the tensioning being controlled by a pressure medium through a sliding control valve. The tensioning is provided by different sized pressure chargeable surfaces and is throttled to different degrees with respect to the associated outlet of the sliding control valve. In this connection, it is provided that at least one outlet can be changed as a function of certain parameters.

Infinitely variable cone pulley transmission

An infinitely variable cone disc transmission is disclosed in which the contact pressure forces are generated fully hydraulically and in which the contact pressure level is set either by way of a torque sensor that is disposed on the driven shaft and constitutes a pressure medium throttle that is adjustable as a function of the load and the transmission ratio, or by way of a pressurizing valve that is connected in series with this torque sensor and controlled as a function of the load.

Cone disc transmission, particularly for motor vehicles

A cone disk transmission, particularly for motor vehicles, has an infinitely settable and variable ratio. The transmission uses two pairs of cone disks (2, 3), connected by a coupling belt or chain (24). On cone disk of each pair is axially displaceable, and selectively positionable against the traction element running between the cone pairs by a hydraulic positioning system, for generating engagement or gripping or clamping forces. The positioning pressure is controlled by pressure fluid derived from a spool valve (10). Torque sensors (16, 17) located on the transmission shafts throttle return flow of hydraulic pressure fluid from the control valve, as a function of load. In accordance with the invention, the torque sensors are immediately activated as a function of the intended operating state of the transmission, that is, the direction of transfer of power between the pairs of cone disks, by coupling both of the torque sensors to a transfer valve (FIG. 1: 19) operated by a clutch engagement pressure, or to the spool valve in parallel (FIG. 2), in series (FIG. 3) or cross-connected directly (FIG. 4) from a 2-return pressure line spool valve (88).

Cone disk transmission, especially for motor vehicles

The link chain has links which are coupled together by connecting joint elements (2, 3), formed with end surfaces which transfer frictional forces between a cone disk and the chain. A plurality of links are coupled to these connecting joint elements which form an essentially uniform overall cross section, transferring force between the connecting joint elements and the links. In order to provide for uniform force transfer, some of the links (4, 5, 6, 6', 8, 9, 10) are strengthened with respect to others or 'normal', usually interiorly located links (1, 8). The strengthening can be obtained by using higher strength material, making the links thicker or doubling link elements to form a double-thickness link.

Link chain for an infinitely variable cone drive disk transmission

A plate-link chain for infinitely adjustable cone pulley drives, the link pivot elements of which, joining the individual chain links embodied by plate packets, are embodied as thrust members is disclosed. The thrust members are inserted into recesses of the plate-links, and with their end faces they serve to transfer frictional force between friction wheels and the plate-link chain. The embodiment is such that the length of the thrust members of individual links, defined crosswise to the direction of travel of the plate-link chain varies in a non-periodic sequence over the length of the chain.

To balance twisting torques acting on transmission chain pressure elements (11) located in an asymmetrical wedge zone between a friction disk (7,8) which has an essentially radially directed, plane face and a disk having a divergent, essentially conical engagement surface (14), the centers of curvature (17,18) of the friction surfaces (15,16) of the engagement elements are so positioned that the product of the engagement force components (20,21) acting parallel to the axes of rotation of the disks, and the radial spacing (a) of the contact points (19',23') at which the force components act is essentially equal to the product of the radially directed component (24) of the pulling force of the chain, when in operation, and the spacing (b') measured in a direction parallel to the respective shaft, of the contact point (23') of the pressure element with the disk having the substantially conical divergent engagement surface (14) from the center (C) of the pressure element, measured in its length direction. Any twisting moment tending to act on the pressure elements are thereby counter-balanced.

Asymmetrical infinitely variable transmission system

A plate-link chain for infinitely adjustable cone pulley drives of which the link pivot elements, embodied in particular as thrust pieces which with their end faces transmit the frictional forces between friction disks and the plate link chain, are secured against shifting sideways out of the plate recesses by means of at least one securing element. The securing element is embodied as a metal piece fastened on a contacting part of the profile of the link pivot element opposite the link plate recesses adjacent to the links by a suitable welding process.

Plate link chain for cone pulley drives

To reduce contact pressure and wear-and-tear on contact surfaces of link elements of an endless chain (9) looped between spherical engagement surfaces of cone disks, the radius of curvature R of the spherical engagement surfaces, at any point of engagement with the contact surfaces of the chain link elements is greater than a theoretical radius of curvature R, which theoretical radius of curvature results when the distances of axial movement of the movable cone disks for any two transmission ratios are equal, within the range of transmission ratio of the cone disk transmission; and in which the radius D of curvature of the contact surfaces of the link elements is greater than half the width of the link elements, measured transversely to the chain when it is looped between the pairs of cone disks.

Infinitely variable cone-disk transmission

To reduce the noise level of chains connecting cone pulleys in variable ratio transmissions, in which chain links (1, 15, 43) are joined by rocker elements (3, 16, 44), frame bodies or frames elements (7, 8, 21, 22, 23, 30, 31, 32, 33, 46, 51, 64, 65) are positioned between adjacent hinge joints formed by the rocker elements, located transversely to the chain, the frame bodies having lateral engagement surfaces (11, 24, 25, 26, 55, 56, 57, 66, 67) located laterally adjacent to the sides of the outermost chain link elements for resilient frictional engagement with the facing surfaces of the cone pulleys (12, 40, 41) of the transmission, so that the transmission will be engaged by the engaging surfaces (45) of the rocker elements as well as the engagement surfaces of the frame bodies. The frame bodies are retained on the chain by force engagement with the chain link elements and/or the rocker elements.

Link chain for a variable ratio cone pulley transmission

A side-bar chain for an infinitely variable cone-pulley transmission which chain includes chain links composed of individual side-bars and joint pieces connecting the links together, with each joint piece being composed of a pair of rocker pieces pushed into apertures of the side-bars, the rocker pieces having end faces extending laterally of the length of the chain for transmitting friction forces between associated friction pulley sheaves and the side-bar chain, and each rocker piece being connected with its associated side-bars by being interlocked therewith to be secured against movement in the direction of pivoting between adjacent links. Each said side-bar presents two end webs spaced apart in the running direction of the chain, extending transverse to the running direction and to the length of the rocker pieces, and each bounding a side-bar aperture. Each rocker piece is configured to bear against a respective end web of each associated side-bar at two abutment regions spaced apart in the direction in which its associated end webs extend. The dimension of each said rocker piece in the direction in which its associated webs extend is substantially equal to the distance between its associated abutment regions.

Side-bar chain for infinitely variable cone-pulley transmissions

The link plates of the articulated chain are so located that a connecting line through the centers of gravity of neighboring transversely adjacent link plates (1, 2) forms, throughout a major portion of its length, an essentially straight line extending across the chain and at an inclination with respect to the longitudinal extent of the chain, to thereby prevent application of excessive bend-through forces on a cross joint element (3) such as a cross bolt.

A side-bar chain has chain links each formed of a stack of side bars and chain pins traversing aligned side bar openings in the side bars of each stack transversely to the chain length; and a plurality of chain braces each formed by opposite outermost side bars of at least some of the chain links and a transverse web joining the brace-forming side bars to one another and straddling the side bar stack transversely to the chain length. Each brace-forming side bar includes a longitudinal web extending parallel to the chain length between the side bar opening and the transverse web. The transverse web of each chain brace has an aperture for reducing a cross-sectional dimension of the transverse web measured parallel to the chain length at least adjacent the longitudinal web of each brace-forming side bar. The transverse web has an outer width dimension which is measured parallel to the chain length and which is substantially equal to a length dimension of the brace-forming side bars, measured parallel to the chain length.

Side-bar drive chain

A side-bar chain for an infinitely variable cone pulley transmission which chain includes links composed of individual side bars and rocker pieces inserted through apertures in the side bars and connecting the links together. The rocker pieces have end faces extending laterally of the length of the chain for transmitting friction forces between associated friction pulley sheaves and the side-bar chain. Each of the side bars presents two end webs spaced apart in the running direction of the chain, extending transverse to the running direction and to the length of the rocker pieces, and each bounding a side-bar aperture. At least one of the end webs has a convex rocker surface projecting into the side-bar aperture. The rocker pieces each have a concave rocker surface extending in the longitudinal direction of the rocker pieces and bearing against the convex rocker surface with radius of curvature of the convex rocker surface of the side bar being smaller than that of the concave rocker surface of the rocker piece.

Side-bar chain for infinitely variable cone pulley transmissions

In an infinitely variable cone pulley transmission having a driving shaft connected to a source of driving power, a driven shaft, a pair of conical discs nonrotatably mounted on each shaft with at least one disc of each pair being axially displaceable on its associated shaft, an endless transmission element adapted to run between the two pairs of discs for transmitting power between the shafts, a cylinder-piston unit associated with one axially displaceable disc on each pair for urging that disc toward the other disc of the same pair with a force proportional to the pressure of fluid in the unit, a distributing valve arranged to be arbitrarily adjusted to vary the speed ratio of the transmission, and connected to a pressure fluid source and to each unit for supplying pressure fluid thereto, and a normally-closed control valve connected in fluid flow communication with the distributing valve for controlling the fluid pressure in the unit associated with the driven shaft, the closing force presented by the control valve is controlled by an electromagnetic actuator having an energizing winding and connected to cause the closing force presented by the control valve to be proportional to the current through the winding, and an element connected to supply the winding with a current proportional to the torque being transmitted by the transmission, whereby the closing force presented by the control valve to fluid in the unit associated with the driven shaft is proportional to the torque.

Cone-pulley belt-type transmission

An infinitely variable cone-pulley transmission of the type including two pairs of cone pulley sheaves, each mounted on a respective shaft, a transmission member circulating between the pairs of pulley sheaves, a pressure cylinder at least partly defined by one pulley sheave of each pair and including a piston, a control valve supplying hydraulic pressure medium to each cylinder chamber, with the pressure being distributed between the two cylinder chambers in order to control the transmission ratio between the pulley sheave pairs, and a torque sensor associated with one of the shafts and active to control the hydraulic pressure in one of the chambers as a function of the torque on that one of the shafts, is supplemented by a two-part presser device which responds to the torque on one of the shafts in order to press one of the pulley sheaves on that shaft against the transmission member with a force which is a function of that torque.
