Various embodiments include a method for actuating a piezo actuator of an injection valve of a fuel injection system comprising: determining actuation signals for the piezo actuator using a stored current/voltage characteristic curve for carrying out an injection process; detecting the profile of the current flowing through the piezo actuator during the injection process and the profile of the voltage applied to the piezo actuator during the injection process; adapting the stored current/voltage characteristic curve based at least in part on the detected current profile and the detected voltage profile; and determining actuation signals for the piezo actuator using the stored, adapted current/voltage characteristic curve for carrying out a subsequent injection process.

The present disclosure relates to fuel injectors. The teachings may be embodied in a method for characterizing a hydraulic coupling element. The fuel injector may have a piston to pressurize a hydraulic medium and a pin connecting the piston to a piezoactuator. The method may include applying a charging current to the piezo actuator low enough that the leakage flow prevents a pressure differential and the nozzle needle remains closed; discharging the piezo actuator with a current high enough to release the mechanical connection between the piston and the pin; detecting when the piston impacts on the pin; and characterizing the coupling element based on the time between discharge and impact.

Method for operating a piezo injector

A method for controlling the injection quantity of a piezoinjector of a fuel injection system, which comprises a nozzle needle displaceable by a piezoactuator. Based on the instantaneous injection quantity, a selection is made among various control methods. In a ballistic injector mode, a first control method is carried out, wherein both a needle closing point in time is equalized and a needle travel time is also equalized. In a full stroke injector mode, a second control method is carried out, wherein a needle closing point in time is equalized, but the needle travel time is not equalized.

Method for controlling the injection quantity of a piezoinjector of a fuel injection system

A method is disclosed for determining the idle travel of a piezo-injector which has a piezo-actuator and a nozzle needle which is activated directly by the piezo-actuator. A test pulse is applied to the piezo-actuator, which pulse brings about a continuous increase in the piezo-travel. The time period is measured which passes between the starting of the test pulse and the time when the idle travel is overcome. The idle travel of the piezo-injector is then determined from the measured time period.

Method for determining the idle travel of a piezo-injector with a directly actuated nozzle needle

A method for determining the actual start of injection is performed by an actuating device for a piezo fuel injection valve and includes the following steps. First, a test injection is carried out with such a short actuation duration that a start of shut-off takes place at a time so early that the nozzle needle does not reach the open end position. Said time is predefined by the actuation and is therefore precisely known. Next, the closing time of the nozzle needle is then determined by measurement and evaluation of an electrical variable of the piezo direct drive. Once the closing time and the time of the start of shut-off are known, the actual start of injection is calculated back from the closing time via the start of shut-off. This permits an adequately precise determination of the actual injection quantity in almost every operating state of the internal combustion engine.

A tendency of the controlled load to oscillate when controlling a capacitive load can be avoided according to a piezo actuator for an injection valve of an internal combustion engine, having charging and discharging processes for charging and discharging the capacitive load by means of a load current, each loading process being effected by chronological partial load current pulses according to chronological partial charging capacity pulses (p, p, . . . pn), wherein the envelope (E) of the partial charging capacity pulses (p, p, . . . pn), during the loading process, increases in a strictly monotonous manner in an initial phase, and the slope of the envelope decreases in a monotonous manner.
