A method of improving the surface quality of a continuously cast slab, particularly a thin slab having a maximum cast thickness of 100 mm, wherein the slab is covered with a casting slag film and a layer of scale, and wherein the slab is descaled after casting and is rolled in a finishing train. A reaction agent, which is different from water, is applied onto the slab prior to descaling or during descaling. The application of the reaction agent may be preceded by a conventional hydraulic, mechanical or pneumatic removal of the layer of scale which covers the slab.

Method of improving the surface quality of a continuously cast slab

A method for the sequential casting of steel strip in steel strip casting equipment wherein under normal operating conditions a steel melt is fed through a pouring tube having discharge ports into the pouring area of a cooled ingot mold at a location below the surface of the melt in the mold and is thereafter removed from the mold in the form of steel strip by the combined operation of mold oscillation means and strip discharge means. After the feed of melt is interrupted, anchoring rods are partially longitudinally immersed into the melt laterally of the pouring area of the mold, and the surface of the melt in the mold is lowered to a level below the pouring area. After a desired interval, the melt feed is continued, and the level of the surface of the melt in the mold is allowed to rise above the discharge ports of the pouring tube. Thereafter, casting flux is applied to the surface of the melt, and the operation of the mold oscillation means and the strip discharge means is resumed. The method also includes the steps of restarting the feed of melt through the pouring tube after a desired interval; allowing the level of the melt in the cavity of the mold to rise above the discharge opening of the pouring tube; thereafter applying a layer of casting flux to the surface of the melt in the mold; and restarting the strip discharge means and the mold oscillation means such that the original level of melt in the cavity in the mold is reestablished and maintained.

Method for sequence casting of steel strip

The invention provides a mold for the continuous casting of steel strip. The mold is arranged with a mold cavity having a longitudinal axis parallel to the casting direction. The width of the cavity in its upstream area is sufficient to provide at least the required minimum spacing between the pouring tube and the walls of the mold. The mold comprises side- and end-walls arranged respectively to define a cavity having three portions, the first being of substantially the same parallelepipedal cross-section as the strip being cast; the second being a flared area in the upper central area of the mold to accommoate a pouring tube, wherein the side-walls are tapered inwardly from the upper part of the mold to a lower point at which the cross-section of the mold approximates the size and shape of the strip being cast; and the third being a strand shell formation initialization zone in the flared area having walls extending in substantial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the mold from the surface level of the molten bath at which the strand shell starts to form, to a point where the strand shell is sufficiently thick to withstand tapering inwardly without wrinkling or rupturing.

Mold for the continuous casting of steel strip

Apparatus and processes for use therewith are provided for the start-up of the continuous casting of strip metal, preferably steel, in which liquid metal is poured into a flared type continuous casting strip-shaped mold equipped with detector means for monitoring the instantaneous surface level of the liquid metal bath formed in the flared zone of the mold, and sensor means for sensing the presence of liquid in the core of the cast strip downstream of the mold, and means are further provided responsive to said detectors and sensor for controlling both the rate of pouring the liquid metal, and the start-up and rate of withdrawal of the cast strip to ensure the continuous presence of a liquid metal core in said cast strip downstream of said mold, for signalling when the distribution ports of the pouring tube become submerged, and for thereafter during casting maintaining a predetermined optimum operating surface level of said metal bath.

Method and apparatus for continuously casting metal

A method for concluding the operation of the continuous casting of strip metal comprising the steps of casting said strip in a narrow slotted strip shaped continuous casting mold having a flared inlet pouring zone necking down to a distal zone in which the walls of the mold are parallel and spaced apart by substantially the desired cross-sectional shape and dimensions of the strip being cast, pouring liquid metal through a pouring tube having an orifice into said flared zone, and controlling the pouring rate thereof, continuously detecting and monitoring the instantaneous surface level of the metal bath in said mold, withdrawing the casting from the distal end of said mold, and controlling the rate of withdrawal, adjusting the pouring rate and withdrawal rate so that the level of the metal bath is at a maximum height for said mold when in normal operation, continuously sensing whether or not there is present downstream of said mold evidence of the liquid core of said cast strip, reducing the pouring and withdrawal rates for concluding the casting to a rate at which the liquid core of the cast strip is near to but downstream of the mold and at which the metal bath level remains constant, terminating said pouring while continuing said withdrawal, whereby the metal bath level descends rapidly toward the neck end of said flared zone, reducing the withdrawal rate when the metal bath level is close to the lower end of the flared zone to a rate at which the upper surface of the metal bath can congeal sufficiently for further processing downstream by the time it reaches the end of the distal zone, and thereafter withdrawing the casting.

Method for concluding the operation of the continuous casting of strip

Means are provided for connecting the proximal end of a dummy strip to the distal (i.e. leading) end of a strip casting, in which a throw-away element serving both as a connector and a heat sink for chilling the metal adjacent to the connector is removably mounted on the proximal end of the dummy strip, with a slightly resilient sealing element holding both the dummy strip and the connector-heat sink element centrally of the mold cavity, and with the connector-heat sink spaced from the walls of the mold by a narrow gap and also having means for both chilling and positively interlocking with the metal of the distal end of the cast strip when it congeals.

Apparatus for connecting a dummy strip to the leading end of a casting

A method of and an apparatus for producing wide strip at increased production rates connects the individual lengths of rough-rolled or continuously caused rough strip end to end to form a continuous band which is passed at constant speed through the working rolls of a hot-rolling finishing line. Downstream of the hot-rolling stands, the wide hot-rolling band is subdivided into lengths of wide strip which can be coiled on separate coilers.

Method of and apparatus for the production of wide strip

A mold has two broad side walls opposing each other at a distance and being connected to two narrow walls which oppose each other and are arranged between the side walls. The upper portion of the side walls defines a funnel-shaped casting area whereby the narrow walls are arranged beyond the casting area so that the side walls extend parallel towards the narrow walls at the distance which corresponds to the width of the cast steel.

Mold for continuous casting of steel strip

A roller apron for a continuous casting installation and serving to support a partially solidified strand cast at a continuous casting installation, especially a steel strand. The roller apron comprises a number of pairs of rollers of different diameter arranged in succession in the direction of travel of the strand. The cast strand is preferably a slab and there are arranged in alternate sequence in the roller apron larger size rollers mounted externally of the maximum slab width and one or more smaller size rollers, wherein each such smaller size roller has at least one of its bearings or supports mounted within the maximum slab width.
