A delay line for travelling wave tubes, particularly travelling wave tube whose gain and whose output power are independent of frequency over a plurality of octaves and contain a helix (9) in an electrically conductive cylinder (5). The helix is fixed and adjusted by retaining rods (8). Loading webs (4) are arranged parallel to the axis of the adjoining electrically conductive cylinder (5) and a small gap (12) is left free adjacent the helix (9). The extremely high requirement for mechanical dimensional accuracy and reproducibility of the dimensions in such delay lines are obtained by using loading webs (4) which are integrally formed in the electrically conductive cylinder (5).

Method of manufacturing and assembling a TWT delay line

A heatable sorption getter body for reactive residual gas clean-up in sealed vessels is provided. The getter body includes an insulating member, two electrical contacts, and a getter composition applied over surface portions of the insulating member. The insulating member serves as a carrier for the getter composition. The getter precursor composition is applied preliminarily after which the resulting dried assembly is subjected to sintering to complete preparation of the getter composition before the getter body is positioned in a sealed vessel.

An apparatus for maintaining constant pressure in gas discharge vessels, particularly for flat plasma picture screens with electron post-acceleration. The gas pressure is kept constant in the gas discharge vessel. For this purpose, a glass container preferably filled with helium is applied in the gas discharge vessel, this glass container being provided with a heater for temperature control and thus provides variable gas permeability. Method for manufacturing a display device

A liquid crystal display device has a pair of carrier plates having a liquid crystal layer therebetween. Electrically conductive coatings are on each plate with at least one of the coatings being subdivided into separate operable segments. Spacing members are in regions of the layer which are not adjacent to the operable segments. Support surfaces are on a facing surface of one of the plates. Spacing elements are on the other plate and project from the facing surface toward and engage the support surfaces so that the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the region of the support surfaces is less than the thickness of the layer in the area of the operable segments. The support surfaces may be a layer on the surface of one of the carrier plates or may be a surface of the carrier plate defined by recesses etched into the plate, which recesses contain surfaces supporting the operable segments. To ensure contact between the spacing elements and support surfaces, one of the carrier plates can be provided with a layer which has a different coefficient of thermal expansion so that after being applied at an elevated temperature and cooled, the layer will cause the plate to deflect toward the other plate. The support surfaces may be formed by applying different types of layers of material on the surface of the carrier member either in the desired shape or as a continuous layer with the undesired portions being subsequently removed.

Liquid crystal display device

A control plate for a gas discharge display device has a mechanically stable carrier plate of an electrically insulating material which has metallized column conductor tracks on one side and metallized row conductor tracks on an opposite side which in combination form a matrix of perpendicular rows and columns. The carrier plate has perforations extending through plate at points of intersection of the rows and columns. Each row and column is separately energizeable for selected transfer of electrons in the display device from one side of the plate to the other. The metallized tracks on each side extend a distance into the perforations so as to prevent charge accumulation within the perforations which would otherwise impair the control obtainable by the plate. The metallized portions of the perforations are separated by a ring of exposed carrier plate which is substantially nonconducting having a resistance of 100 megaohms or greater.

Control plate for a gas discharge display device

A luminescent screen for flat image display devices, having improved light efficiency comprises a glass screen (1) provided on its inner surface with a pattern of recesses (2) corresponding to a desired luminescent dot pattern with luminescent dot surfaces (5) positioned not only along the bottom of such recesses but also along the upwardly extending recess walls and a contrasting border layer (3) is positioned on the land areas between each recess. In producing such screens, the contrasting border layer is utilized as an etch mask for the recesses and as an application mask for the luminescent material.

Luminescent screen for flat image display devices

A slurry comprised of particulated glass-forming substances, with or without particulated relatively clear or light-colored metal oxides, dispersed in a photolacquer is applied as a uniform layer on a surface of a color image screen. Such layer is then developed via conventional photoforming techniques to produce sites or windows for phosphor dots and the resultant window-containing layer is heated, prior or subsequent to application of phosphor dots in such windows, at a temperature in the range of about 350.degree. to 500.degree. C. In instances where metal oxide particles are present in the slurry, the resultant layer becomes opaque or dark upon tempering and in cases where only pure glass-forming substance particles are in the slurry, the resultant layer becomes opaque or dark upon tempering in a reducing atmosphere. Electrical conductivity may be imparted to the light-absorbing coating by addition of selective conductive materials to the initial slurry.

Method of producing light-absorbing edging about phosphor dots on color

Luminescent materials are adhered to TV color picture screens or image display device screens by coating the inner surface of a glass screen substrate with a conductive or non-conductive C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alcoholic or carboxylic solution containing oxygen-rich organic materials selected from the group consisting of silicon salts of relative low molecular weight carboxylic acids, tin salts of relatively low molecular weight carboxylic acids (which can be optionally doped to render them conductive, if desired) or mixtures thereof or a doped tin compound, at least partially drying such coating, as at a temperature of about 150.degree. C., applying a select pattern of luminescent materials onto such partially dried coating and curing or tempering the resultant structure, as at a temperature of about 500.degree. C. so that the luminescent material is firmly embedded within the conductive/non-conductive coating.

A liquid crystal cell having a pair of spaced carrier plates with inner surfaces forming a cavity for receiving a layer of liquid crystal material, each of said inner surfaces being provided with a conductive coating and at least one of the carrier plates having its conductive coating covered with an insulated layer of silicon oxide base characterized by the insulating layer containing an additive selected from a group consisting of boron oxide, tin oxide, titanium oxide and mixtures thereof so that the insulating layer causes homeotropic orientation of the molecules of the liquid crystal layer.

A liquid crystal cell comprising at least two plate members each having a surface with at least a portion thereof having electric conductive coatings thereon and spacing means for maintaining the plate members with said surfaces parallel to one another to enclose a liquid crystal layer characterized by the spacing means consisting of at least one glass fiber which is imperviously connected to the plates by an adhesive. Preferably, the glass fiber is provided with an adhesive coating so that during assembly of the parts forming the cell, heat and pressures will cause the adhesive coating to be extruded from between the fiber and the surfaces of the plate member to enable the fiber to come into contact and to adhesively bond the fiber to the surfaces of the two plate members.

Liquid crystal cell having a glass fiber frame

A liquid crystal display device having two carrier plates each having a first surface supporting electrically conducting electrode layers, the plates being hermetically sealed together with the first surfaces in facing relationship to form a chamber receiving a liquid crystal layer characterized by a covering layer disposed on each of the first surfaces. In the preferred embodiment, each of the first surfaces is provided with an obliquely vapor deposited aligning layer inbetween the conducting layer and the covering layer which covering layer has a thickness no greater than 0.05 microns and preferably less than 0.02 microns. The covering layer may be a silane derivative bonded by chemosorption on the aligning layer, a nitride such as silicon nitride, or an oxide. In producing the display device, a method which includes vapor depositing aligning layer on the first surface of each carrier plate subsequent to applying the electrical conducting electrode layers and prior to sealing the plates includes the improvement of applying the covering layer. The covering layer may be applied by sputtering-on process, by pyrolytic process, by a resinate technique, by immersion of a material and by reacting with a material applied to the surface to be coated.

A liquid crystal type display system containing a liquid crystal layer with positive dielectric anisotropy located between two carrier plates whose mutually opposite surfaces each have an electrode coating as well as an insulation layer which has been vaporized on obliquely. A rotating display cell with obliquely vaporized-on layers is provided by choosing the vapor deposition angle for one of these layers in excess of about 75.degree. and for the other layer less than about 65.degree. and positioning the carrier plates in spaced relationship to one another without any substantial rotating of one plate relative to the other thereof.
