A cover for a foldable convertible top has a highly stretchable outer foil having an inner face, and a foam-plastic core layer bonded over the entire bonding-foil inner face and itself having an inner face. The outer foil can be a one-piece slush-molded foil or it can be highly stretchable and a thin thermoplastic bonding foil can be provided between the outer foil and the core layer.

Foldable convertible top and method of making same

A convertible top has according to the invention a flexible textile cover formed of a generally horizontal top panel extending generally rearward from a front edge, a rear panel extending downward from and joined at a rear seam to the front panel, and a pair of generally vertical side panels unitarily formed with the rear panel, extending forward therefrom, and joined at respective side seams to the top panel. The side seams are generally horizontal. In addition the rear seam is generally horizontal and the side seams form end continuations of the rear seam.

Convertible top

A convertible roof has a rain channel along the longitudinal edge in which a spacer of rubber or synthetic resin is received between a bead-forming strip and the roof covering and is attached to the bead-forming strip and an edge of the roof covering with a U-shaped binding strip.

Convertible roof

A motor-vehicle convertible top has a flexible and waterproof outer layer defining a roof having edges and an inner surface, a pair of sides joined at the edges to the roof, and a rear wall extending between the sides and a rear edge of the roof. A heat- and sound-insulating inner layer of a foamable plastic is bonded directly to the inner surface of the roof and inner surfaces of the sides. A pair of reinforcing bands extending along the edges are fixed to the layers. A plurality of crosswise rigid reinforcing struts extend between the bands and secured to the inner layer. The outer layer has a textile inner surface to which the inner layer is directly bonded. The inner layer is molded in place in a closed mold under 140 bar to 150 bar pressure, so that it is integrally united with the outer layer. The inner layer is polyurethane and has a Shore D hardness of about 40 and a polyol:isocyanate ratio of about 100:38 by weight. Furthermore the inner layer has a thickness of between 2 mm and 6 mm. A roof liner is bonded to mounting strips, which are then attached to the struts.

Motor-vehicle convertible top

A motor-vehicle convertible top has an outer cover formed with a window opening having an edge, a window having an outer edge secured to the outer-cover edge, and at least one hook fixed to the edge at a side of the opening and open toward the opening. A flexible liner generally similar to the cover has an edge extending along the side of the opening and formed with a pocket. A bar set in the pocket is fitted to the hook. The pocket is formed with an opening through which the hook engages directly with the bar. There are a plurality of the hooks spaced along the side of the opening and the pocket is formed with a plurality of the holes through which the respective hooks engage.

Roof-liner attachment for motor-vehicle convertible top

A motor-vehicle convertible top has a foldable and waterproof cover having an inner face, a framework having a plurality of rigid struts juxtaposed with the inner face and having ends at edges of the cover, reinforcing belts having outer faces provided at the strut ends with a directly bonded cushion layer engaging the cover inner face, and connecting elements securing the struts to the cover. The cushion layer is a foamed plastic bonded directly to the belt outer face. A foam-plastic insulating layer unitarily bonded to the inner face has a reduced thickness at the strut ends. A roof liner is bonded to mounting strips, which are therein attached to the struts.

Insulating layer secured to struts by connecting elements in a motor vehicle folding convertible top

A convertible top has the edges of its cover stitched to polyethylene-shaped strips which conform to the undersides of the frame members around the front, rear and sides of the convertible top. The strips are held against the undersides of the frame members complementarily by holding rails and screws, and sealing strips are fitted onto the holding rails.
