Process for the preparation of camphene by the rearrangement of .alpha.-pinene A process for the preparation of camphene by the rearrangement of .alpha.-pinene in the presence of a titanium oxide hydrate catalyst under the action of heat, wherein .alpha.-pinene is refluxed until the content of .alpha.-pinene in the reaction mixture is still at least 3% by weight, and the rearrangement is then brought to completion in a secondary reaction at a temperature below 160.degree. C. By carrying out the process in this way--refluxing to a relatively high residual content of .alpha.-pinene and performing a secondary reaction at a lower temperature--the formation of polymeric by-products is reduced. This process moreover increases the yield of camphene in that recycled tricyclene, concentrated in the distillation of the crude product, is partially rearranged to camphene or the formation of more tricyclene is reduced.

Process for the preparation of camphene by the rearrangement of a-pinene

In a process for preparing terpene esters by reaction of camphene and a low molecular weight carboxylic acid over an acid ion exchanger as catalyst, the reactants are passed from below through the acid ion exchanger located in a column-shaped reactor at such a velocity that the ion exchanger is suspended to uniformly fill the reactor, i.e. gives a pseudofluid suspended bed. In the case of the preparation of isobornyl acetate, a high specific catalyst productivity, a high selectivity of the reaction with formation of small amounts of other esters, a high degree of conversion of the reaction component used in substoichiometric amount and a high total catalyst productivity are achieved.

Process for the continuous preparation of terpene esters

The invention relates to new terpene ethers of the formula ##STR1## in which R denotes a cyclic or bicyclic radical or an alkyl radical which is substituted by cyclic, bicyclic or tricyclic radicals, optionally via an oxygen bridge. The compounds are prepared by reaction of camphene with alcohols R--OH, in which R represents one of the above-mentioned radicals. The new ethers are used in the field of aroma substances and solvents, and as intermediates for plant protection agents, agents for combating pests and medicaments.
