Operating noise of a dynamo electric machine, and particularly a three-phase vehicular-type alternator, can be reduced by changing the reluctance or permeability of the magnetic path between rotor and stator of adjacent stator teeth by splitting the stator teeth to introduce additional radially extending gaps in the stator teeth or by distributing, non-uniformly or uniformly, ferromagnetic slot closers about the circumference of the stator slots while leaving, adjacent a stator slot with a magnetic closer, open stator slots or slots covered only with non-magnetic slot cover elements, such as treated paper, cardboard, or the like. This changes the frequency of attraction between rotor and stator to a frequency range which is not humanly perceptible or annoying, for example falling below the frequency range at which the alternator can operate, for example below idling speed of an internal combustion engine driving the alternator, or towards a frequency range so high that the operating noise level of the internal combustion engine masks any generator noise.

Dynamo electric machine with low-noise operating characteristics

In an apparatus for noise reduction and damping in ventilators of electric machines, in particular vehicular alternators, it is proposed that the ventilator support on the rotor shaft be effected by axially staggering inner rubber inlays on both sides and providing adjoining outer spring pressure elements such that the ventilator region is clamped, at least in the axial direction and preferably radially as well with an additional rubber ring. As a result, the transfer of resonant vibrations of the rotor to the ventilator are reliably avoided, and the noise emissions are decisively reduced.

Noise damped dynamo electric machine, especially vehicular type

To counteract magnetic forces arising in the operation of a dynamo electric machine, and more particularly a vehicular, especially automotive three-phase alternator, causing, in operation, noise due to shifting of laminations under the influence of magnetic forces, the stator laminations are connected together at a circumferential edge, preferably the outer circumference, by a welding seam or track applied by laser welding. More than one seam or track may be provided, the welding seams or tracks extending in undulating or zig-zag form from one end face of the stack to the other in a criss-cross or mesh pattern.

Method and apparatus to reduce operating noise of dynamo electric

To counteract the effects of centrifugal force on internal blades or vanes positioned in gaps (31) between adjacent claws (22, 23) of a claw-pole rotor (R) of a claw-pole alternator, a plastic sleeve (33) is fitted over the field winding (20) and has cooling fins or vanes or blades (32) projecting radially therefrom, at an inclination with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor, and located between the inclined faces of the claw poles. The end portions (36, 37) projecting beyond the sleeve may be straight (FIG. 4) or the end portions (38, 39) may be curved (FIG. 5). Preferably, a curable casting compound is cast within the sleeve and secures the winding (20) in position, the sleeve being fitted in form of a circular bandage over the winding.

To protect a weld connection between an external conductor (11, 12) and a projecting pin (5, 6) of an electronic component, the base plate (2) of the electronic component has a tubular element (8) attached thereto, for example formed with an insertion slit (9) through which the externally accessible conductor (11, 12) extends, weld connections (511, 612) being formed between the external conductor and the pin. The weld connection is protected by a casting compound of corrosion-protective, insulating material, introduced into the cup-shaped space between the bottom plate (2) and the tubular element (8), the casting compound entirely surrounding the weld connections.

Corrosion-protected electrical circuit component

A rectifier for association with an automotive alternator is made by providing a support plate (1) of aluminum on which a post (2) of aluminum is secured, for example by welding (FIG. 1) or by gripping a conical or bulged surface within the thickness of the plate (1) upon deformation of the plate after introducing the bulged or double-conical post into a hole in the plate; alternatively, the plate (1) which is of aluminum, can have a copper disk (23) secured thereto, nickel-plated all over, to which the semiconductor diode chip (4) is soldered. To securely retain a casting compound surrounding the diode chip, a sleeve (7) is placed around the chip, and the surface of the plate (1) is deformed to provide for reentrant claws (38), which mechanically grip the casting compound. The diode chip (4) is preferably secured to a copper-plated surface on the post (2), for example by soldering, the post as well as the plate then being made of aluminum for intimate contact with the plate and heat transfer from the diode thereto.

Solid-state diode-rectifier and heat sink structure

To provide for effective cooling of an automotive-type alternator and/or other equipment within an automobile, for example the radiator or other heat exchanger, even under external high-temperature conditions and low engine speed (n.sub.E), for example under idling conditions, the alternator phase windings (6, 7, 8) are connected to respective phase windings (16, 17, 18) of a three-phase squirrel-cage motor which is connected to a blower (2), preferably a radial-type fan, directing forced air circulation towards the alternator and/or the vehicle radiator, the alternator then being placed within the airstream of the radiator as well. A temperature and/or speed-responsive switch can be interposed between the alternator and the motor to energize the motor only if the temperature of the alternator and/or the engine, or other component, rises above a predetermined level, or if the alternator speed drops below a predetermined level.

Vehicular-type generator and forced air cooling blower combination

To provide for effective lubrication of a vehicular-type alternator, the bearings (2, 4) positioned at the respective end plates (1, 5) are pressure-lubricated. An oil pressure supply duct (21) is directed towards the rear bearing (4) which is positioned within a chamber (23), the chamber communicating with the central longitudinal bore (24) extending through the shaft towards the drive bearing (2). The drive bearing is positioned within a second chamber (26, 29) and radial bores (25) extend from the central bore (24) in the shaft into the drive side chamber, the drive side chamber being connected to a drain duct 30. To provide communication between the end faces of the bearings, a sickle-shaped recess extends partially circumferentially around the outer race of the respective bearing in the zone of termination of the ducts (21, 30), and having an axial length longer than the respective outer race (34) of the bearing.

Pressure-lubricated automotive-type alternator

Insulation between a rotor shaft and slip rings for electrical connection to a rotary winding is provided by a layer coating the shaft that is sintered in place from fluidized bed material, providing a thin layer that is sufficiently tough for slip rings to be mounted on top so that the layer provides the insulation from the shaft. The slip rings may be quite thin, thus keeping the active surface of the slip ring to a very small diameter. Brass and bronze slip rings may be press-fitted onto the shaft while maintaining the insulation of the layer, but carbon slip rings, which are desirable for long life are best secured by means of an adhesive. The slip ring assembly is particularly useful for three-phase alternators of motor vehicles.

Slip ring assembly

The stator of a three phase AC generator is wound automatically. A first set of partial windings consitutes the first winding. Each of the partial windings has at least one turn. The first partial winding is wound in slots 1 and 4 in the clockwise direction, the second in slots 7 and 4 in the counterclockwise direction, etc. Before the second partial winding of the first set is wound, the first partial windings of the second and third phase are wound in slots 2 and 5 and 3 and 6, respectively. Similarly, after the counterclockwise winding in slots 4 and 7, the second partial windings of the second and third phase are wound in the counterclockwise direction in slots 8 and 5 and 9 and 6, respectively. This procedure is repeated until all slots are filled. If the same winding profile is to be maintained throughout, the part of the first partial windings associated with the first, second and third phase to be inserted in slots 1, 2, 3, respectively, is left out of the slots until the last partial winding of the phases has been wound. The loose ends of the first partial windings are then pushed into the respective slots. After the partial windings are connected to each other to form the first, second and third main windings, the winding starts and the winding ends of these main windings are connected together to form the desired electrical configuration. In this connection, the start and end of the second winding are electrically interchanged, to create the required 120.degree. phase difference between all the windings.

Method for winding the stator of a three phase generator

To prevent over-excitation upon high-speed operation of a compound wound alternator, the shunt field, connected in standard manner to a voltage regulator, has an additional shunt field winding placed on the core, the additional shunt field winding being controlled from the output of the alternator and generating a magnetic field counter the field due to the compound winding if an auxiliary counter field voltage regulator senses that the output voltage of the alternator rises above a predetermined value.

Direct-current, self-contained, mobile power supply system

To facilitate assembly under mass production conditions, and to permit efficient cooling, a voltage regulator structure secured within a power transistor housing of the TO-5 shape as attached to a carrier plate which is narrower than the diameter of the housing, with a cooling sheet metal element interposed, bent over the carrier plate to be positioned within the cooling air stream of the automotive alternator, a carrier plate being preferably integral with the brush holder for the field current slip rings of the alternator. The brush holder-carrier plate combination is formed with attachment eyes on the carrier plate laterally of the voltage regulator, to attach the entire unit into an alternator and provide rugged and secure connection of the entire assembly to the remainder of the alternator structure.
