A fuel tank, especially for motor vehicles, includes two shaped shells which include a shell bottom, shell walls and a continuous shell rim, the shell rims of the shaped shells being adapted to be welded together to thereby form a composite fuel tank structure. At least one of the bottoms of one of the shaped shells which forms one of the side walls of the composite fuel tank structure is provided with reinforcing ribs and an outwardly protruding bulge. Additionally, the bottom of the composite tank structure formed by a wall of one of the shaped shells includes a bulge. The bulges form flexurally soft deformation zone extending generally at right angles to the reinforcing ribs and generally parallel to a portion of the shell rim which extends generally parallel to the bottom of the composite tank for absorbing stresses.

Motor vehicle fuel tank

A venting device for fuel tanks which includes equalizing chambers disposed immediately beneath a top wall and approximately centrally with respect to side walls of the fuel tank, with the equalizing chamber being vented to the atmosphere. Vent lines are disposed inside the fuel tank and are connected to the equalizing chamber. The vent lines terminate freely in an interior of a chamber vented to an interior of the fuel tank. The end of the vent lines terminate in vent openings located in an immediate vicinity of an end wall of the chamber which receives the vent line. A single opening is provided for venting each chamber, with the opening being disposed in a wall which is opposite to the chamber end wall receiving the vent line. When the fuel tank rotates about a longitudinal axis of the vehicle, a volume of air, which is in the chambers in an initial position of the fuel tank, is at first forced beneath a surface of the fuel and then, if the tank continues to rotate, escapes through the adjacent vent line into a corresponding guide curve located above, so that a hydraulic siphoning action is interrupted and the escape of fuel through the equalizing line to the atmosphere is prevented.

Motor vehicle fuel tank venting device

A venting device for fuel tanks of vehicles, especially motor vehicles, with an equalizing chamber to be placed in the fuel tank close to and beneath an upper wall at approximately centrally relative to side walls of the fuel tank. The equalizing chamber is vented to the atmosphere through an equalizing line and is connected to vent lines on both sides running on an inside of the fuel tank at approximately the same height. The vent lines terminate freely in a vicinity of each side wall with a vent opening at one end. The vent lines preferably terminate at the side wall line opposite to the connection of the vent lines with the equalizing chamber. Each vent line, at the ends containing the vent opening, has a chamber within the tank with the chamber being vented to the interior of the fuel tank and with the vent openings of the respective vent lines terminating in the chamber.

A fuel tank of a motor vehicle, in which the filter pipe terminates to one side of its rear wall at the top thereof; the filler pipe includes sections extending in horizontal and inclined planes and is provided with an inlet opening adapted to be closed by a closure lid and intended for the insertion of the discharge pipe; the discharge pipe thereby rests against the lower edge of the inlet opening, when filling the tank, while its upper nozzle surface abuts at a support plate, whereby a vent pipe terminates in the filler pipe downstream of the support plate; the discharge edge of the discharge pipe is thereby adapted to abut at the lower inner wall of the rear, straight and obliquely upwardly extending section of the filler pipe which is provided with an indentation directly downstream of this support place of the discharge edge of the discharge pipe in order to assure an unimpaired inflow of the fuel; the support plate, in its turn, leaves sufficiently large open areas for the passage of air, especially of air flowing out through the vent pipe.
