A process for the preparation of alkylphenols of the formula I ##STR1## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 stand for hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, by reaction of an alkylcyclohex-2-en-1-one of the formula II ##STR2## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 have the aforementioned meanings, at temperatures of from 200.degree. to 400.degree. C. and pressures ranging from 0.01 to 50 bar in the presence of palladium-on-.alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 catalysts, wherein the catalyst used has a specific surface area (BET) of from 1 to 10 m.sup.2 /g, a pore diameter of from 5 nm to 300 .mu.m and a pore volume of from 0.1 to 0.5 cm.sup.3 /g, from 80 to 100% of the pores having a diameter of from 40 to 400 nm, and also novel palladium-on-.alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 catalysts as obtained from a fine-grained alumina powder by steps of molding, pyrolysis and calcination.

Preparation of alkylphenols

A tensioning device for hubs, comprising a winding shaft having rotatably and drivably mounted on it individual winding elements as hub holder for hubs with inner cylindrical bores, the tensioning device including measures for locking the hubs in the axial direction on each individual winding element, wherein the hub (1) includes along its inner circumference (3), alongside the inner bore (5) and uniformly distributed over the circumference, a multiplicity of resilient elements (2), which have the form of a bent-off arm which extends in the radial direction from the inner circumference (3) of the hub (1) and is bent off in the circumferential direction, the end (4) of each resilient arm being at a distance from the bending point of the next-following arm.

Hub tensioning device

The invention relates to a demagnetizing device for magnetic recording media, so-called pancakes, wound up in the form of a tape, which device consists of a cylindrical coil (1), the field distribution (3) of which extends essentially parallel to the winding plane (2) of the recording medium (4), while the pancakes (4) can be inserted into the coil (1) in the axial direction by a lifting device (5). The compact form enables an entire pancake stack to be demagnetized at the same time (FIGURE).

New 1-acyl- and 1-hydroxymethyl-cyclododecanes and -cyclododecenes. The new 1-acyl-cyclododecenes and -cyclododecanes are obtained by a Rupe or Meyer-Schuster rearrangement, with or without subsequent hydrogenation in the presence of Ni, Pd and Pt catalysts. The 1-acyl-cyclododecenes and -cyclododecanes are valuable scents of the basic type of the sought-after macrocyclic musk scents. Furthermore, they are used for the manufacture of numerous other new 1-substituted or 1-and 2-substituted cyclododecenes and cyclododecanes having good scent characteristics.

Aromatic amines, in particular substituted amines, are obtained from corresponding alicyclic alcohols or ketones, in one step, by amination and dehydrogenation with ammonia in the presence of hydrogen and of a palladium catalyst which also contains zinc or cadmium.

New derivatives of 8-dehydro-vitamin A obtained by vinylating or ethynylating and subsequently partially hydrogenating, 1-[3-methyl-octa-1-yne,3,5,-dien-7-on-1-yl]-2,6-dimethyl-cyclohex-1-ene or its 5- and/or 6-methyl derivatives, converting the resulting alcohols to the corresponding derivatives of 8-dehydro-vitamin A halides by reacting with thionyl chloride or phosgene, and if required converting the resulting alcohols or halides to the corresponding trialkylphosphonium salts or triarylphosphonium salts, or reacting the 8-dehydro-vitamin A halide derivatives with alkali metal salts or alkaline earth metal salts or anhydrides of lower carboxylic acids. The new compounds can be partially hydrogenated to the corresponding polyene compounds, in which case the cis-trans isomer mixtures first obtained can be rearranged in the conventional manner to the physiologically active all-trans compounds. Accordingly, the process provides a method for the total synthesis of vitamin A, and of other compounds of the carotinoid series, which is independent of the Wittig ylide synthesis.

Derivatives of 8-dehydro-vitamin A and their preparation

Bis-epoxy-dialkoxy-alkanes are valuable intermediates for the preparation of the sought-after aromatic 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one. The novel bis-epoxy-dialkoxy-alkanes are obtained by reacting the corresponding .alpha.,.alpha.'-dihalo-1,2-diketones with an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal alkoxide and an alkanol at from -20.degree. to +100.degree. C. To prepare the 2,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-furan-3-ones, which are valuable aromatics, the novel bis-epoxy-dialkoxy-alkanes are heated with strong mineral acids or strong organic acids at from 60.degree. to 120.degree. C.

Bis-epoxy-dialkoxy-alkanes

1-[3-Methyl-3,5,5-trialkoxy-pent-1-yn-1-yl]-2,6-dimethyl-cyclohex-1-enes, which may or may not be methyl-substituted in the 2- and/or 6-position, are obtained by reacting the corresponding 1-[3-methyl-but-1-yn-3-en-1-yl]-2,6-dimethyl-cyclohex-1-enes with orthoformic acid esters in the presence of acid condensing agents. The new compounds provide a new method of access to the compounds of carotinoid chemistry, especially to vitamin A, which avoids the conventional expensive synthesis via phosphorus ylide compounds.

Cyclohexene carotinoid intermediates

Novel 2-methylene-3-methyl-3-(1',3'-pentadien-1'-yl)-bicyclo-[2,2,1]-heptanes substituted in the 4'-position by methyl, alkoxycarbonyl, formyl, hydroxymethyl or cyano are obtained by reacting the novel aldehyde 2-methylene-3-methyl-3-formyl-bicyclo-[2,2,1]-heptane with 3-methyl-, 3-alkoxycarbonyl- or acetalized 3-formyl-2-butene-1-triarylphosphorylidene under the conditions of a Wittig reaction, with or without hydrolytic cleavage of the acetal group, or hydrolytic cleavage of the acetal group followed by reduction of the formyl group to the hydroxymethyl group, or hydrolytic cleavage of the acetal group, reaction of the aldehyde with a hydroxylammonium salt, and dehydration of the resulting oxime. The novel compounds are distinguished by interesting scent characteristics.

Novel bicyclic scents

The new product 3-oximino-4-oxo-2,5-dimethyl-tetrahydrofuran is manufactured by oximation of the new product 3-carboxy-4-oxo-2,5-dimethyl-tetrahydrofuran with aqueous nitrous acid, nitrite esters or nitrosyl chloride. Because of its fine caramel-like fragrance it may be used for the manufacture of scents and flavor materials. In addition it presents an advantageous method of synthesis of the sought-after flavor material 4-oxo-3-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrofuran (furaneol).

3-Oximino-4-oxo-2,5-dimethyl-tetrahydrofuran

New substituted 1-alkenynyl-cyclohexanols and 1-alkenynyl-cyclohexenes. The 1-alkenynyl-cyclohexanols are obtained by reacting the corresponding cyclohexanone witn an enyne in the presence of a strongly basic condensing agent in an inert solvent, or with an alkali metal salt of an enyne in an inert solvent. The 1-alkenynyl-cyclohexenes are obtained by dehydrating the 1-alkenynyl-cyclohexanols or 1-cycloalkanolyl-alkynols. The new compounds are themselves interesting scents, but can also be used as starting materials for further interesting scents.

Substituted 1-alkenynyl-cyclohexanols and -cyclohexenes and processes

2,6,6-Trimethyl-cyclohex-2-en-1-one is manufactured by reacting ethyl isopropyl ketone with acrolein in an organic solvent in the presence of a strong organic acid at from 40.degree. to 150.degree. C.

Manufacture of 2,6,6-trimethyl-cyclohex-2-en-1-one

A process for the manufacture of .alpha.,.beta.,.gamma.,.delta.-unsaturated esters containing a very high proportion of the 4(Z)-isomer, which are valuable perfume and flavor materials. The .alpha.,.beta.,.gamma.,.delta.-unsaturated esters are manufactured by a Wittig synthesis from phosphoranes and fumaraldehyde-acid esters under specific conditions.

Manufacture of olefinically unsaturated esters

New 12-alkoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-dodecatetraenes are of interest as perfume and flavor materials having a mandarin and orange effect. The new compounds can be manufactured relatively simply, e.g. by vinylating or ethynylating the corresponding new, but easily accessible, 7-alkoxy-6-methyl-hept-5-en-2-ones and subsequently partially hydrogenating the products, reacting the resulting allyl alcohols with acetoacetic acid esters or diketenes at an elevated temperature, again vinylating or ethynylating the alkoxyketones obtained, then partially hydrogenating the products, and eliminating water from the 12-alkoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-3-hydroxy-dodecatrienes thus obtained.
