A battery characteristics learning apparatus is provided for calculating learning values of circuit constants of an equivalent circuit of a rechargeable battery. The apparatus includes: (1) means for acquiring values of terminal voltage of the battery sensed by voltage-sensing means and values of current of the battery sensed by current-sensing means and storing the acquired values in time series; (2) means for determining, based on the acquired values of the current, whether there has occurred a predetermined change in the current; and (3) means for calculating, when it is determined that the predetermined change has occurred, the learning values of the circuit constants based on those values of the terminal voltage and the current which are acquired at sampling time points or during sampling periods, each of the sampling time points and the sampling periods being set according to a corresponding one of time constants defined by the circuit constants.

A nonaqueous electrolyte solution for secondary batteries, which maintains small internal resistance and high electrical capacitance in long-term use in a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery uses, as an active material, a crystalline carbon material having a high crystallinity, and a negative electrode produced using a polymeric carboxylic compound as a binding agent. The nonaqueous electrolyte solution contains: (A) at least one compound selected from a group consisting of an unsaturated phosphate ester compound represented by a general formula (1) and an unsaturated phosphate ester compound represented by a general formula (2); (B) at least one compound selected from a group consisting of a sulfite ester compound, a sulfonate ester compound, an alkali metal imide salt compound, a fluorosilane compound, an organic disilane compound or an organic disiloxane compound; (C) an organic solvent, and (D) an electrolyte salt. A battery control device calculates a chargeable/dischargeable electric power of a rechargeable battery at the timing after elapse of a predetermined period of time when a terminal voltage of the rechargeable battery changes by charging/discharging of the rechargeable battery during the predetermined period of time. The battery control device calculates a specific change amount of the terminal voltage caused by electric charge accumulation in the rechargeable battery after the elapse of the predetermined period of time when the charging/discharging of the rechargeable battery is performed. Further, the battery control device calculates an estimated target value of a current necessary for changing the terminal voltage to a predetermined target voltage or the terminal voltage after the elapse of the predetermined period of time by using the calculated specific change amount, and calculates chargeable/dischargeable electric power on the basis of the calculated estimated target value.

A battery pack includes battery modules each having a battery cell and a battery case housing the battery cell therein. The battery modules are stacked in a stacking direction so that a cooling passage for allowing a cooling medium to flow is defined between opposed surfaces of adjacent battery cases. One of the opposed surfaces has first ribs projecting toward the other of the opposed surfaces and extending parallel to each other along the one. The other of the opposed surfaces has second ribs projecting toward the one of the opposed surfaces and extending parallel to each other along the other. In the cooling passage, the first ribs and the second ribs intersect each other and end portions of the first ribs and end portions of the second ribs are in contact with each other in the stacking direction.

Disclosed is a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery using a polyanion compound or a lithium nickelate as a positive electrode active material, suppressing the elution of a transition metal from the polyanion compound or ameliorating the deterioration of a binder by a residual alkali component, and provides a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a negative electrode intercalating and deintercalating lithium ions, a positive electrode containing a lithium-containing compound as a positive electrode active material, and a non-aqueous electrolyte with a lithium salt dissolved in organic solvent. The lithium-containing compound is a polyanion compound or a lithium nickelate. The non-aqueous electrolyte contains a fluorosilane compound:  Rto R: alkyl group having 1-8 carbon(s), an alkenyl group having 2-8 carbons, a cycloalkyl group having 5-8 carbons, an aryl group having 6-8 carbons or a fluorine atom. R: alkylene group having 1-8 carbon(s) or an alkylene group having 4-8 carbons having an ether group.

A negative electrode used for a nonaqueous electrolyte solution battery having nonaqueous electrolyte solution containing lithium ion includes a metal carbon composite material. The metal carbon composite material has a porous carbon material having cavities, and a metal material made of metal to reversibly store or emit lithium ion. The metal material is arranged on a surface of the porous carbon material including inner surfaces of the cavities. The porous carbon material has a mass of 1-65 mass % when the metal carbon composite material is defined to have a mass of 100 mass %.

An active material for positive electrode for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprises a lithium-metal composite oxide that is expressed by the general formula of Li(NiCo)MO(where 0.98&#x2266;x&#x2266;1.10, 0.05&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.4, 0.01&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.2, and where M is at least one metal element selected from the group of Al, Mg, Mn, Ti, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ga), and where the SOion content is in the range from 0.4 weight % to 2.5 weight %, and the occupancy rate of lithium found from the X-ray diffraction chart and using Rietveld analysis is 98% or greater, and the carbon amount measured by way of the high frequency heating-infrared adsorption method is 0.12 weight % or less, and that the Karl Fischer water content due to heating at 180&#xb0; C. be 0.2 weight % or less.

Active material for positive electrode in non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having SO4 ions

To provide a positive electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, which if used as a positive electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery, the battery internal resistance can be reduced, giving a secondary battery superior in output characteristics and life property. After mixing raw material powders in specified quantities of each so as to become a lithium-metal complex oxide represented by LiNiMO(wherein M is at least one kind or more of metal elements selected from the group consisting of Co, Al, Mg, Mn, Ti, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Ga; and w and z respectively satisfy 0&#x3c;w&#x2266;0.25, and 1.0&#x2266;z&#x2266;1.1), baking is performed in two stages. At first the temperature is raised from room temperature to a first stage baking temperature (450 to 550&#xb0; C.) at a temperature rise rate of 0.5 and 15&#xb0; C./min, and held for 1 to 10 hours. Then the temperature is raised to a second stage baking temperature (650 to 800&#xb0; C.), and held for 0.6 to 30 hours.

A method of manufacturing a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is provided wherein the positive electrode is made from a lithium-metal composite oxide represented by the general formula Li(Ni, Co)MO(0.98&#x2266;x&#x2266;1.10, 0.05&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.4, 0.01&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.2, in which M represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Mg, Mn, Ti, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ga), and having an average particle diameter of 5 &#x3bc;m to 10 &#x3bc;m a C-amount of 0.14 wt % or less measured by way of the high-frequency heating-IR absorption method, and a Karl Fischer moisture content of 0.2 wt % or less when heated to 180&#xb0; C. and the method comprising the steps of applying a paste of active material for positive electrode to electrode plate to make an electrode, then drying the electrode, and pressing and then installing the electrode in a battery, in a work atmosphere having an absolute moisture content of 10 g/mor less.

A lithium secondary cell, in which a water-soluble polymer having a superior resistance to organic solvents is used as a binder, is disclosed. The cell comprises a positive electrode and an electrolytic solution, wherein the positive electrode includes a positive electrode active material having a LiNiO compound expressed as Li Ni M O (M is at least one element selected from a group including Co, Mn, Al, B, Ti, Mg and Fe, 0<x&lE;1.2, 0<y&lE;0.25) with a specific crystallimity and a binder for binding the positive electrode active material.
