A valve trains drive assembly for a V-type engine which includes a balancing shaft. The valve train includes a flexible transmitter between a crankshaft sprocket and one of two camshafts in the cylinder heads as well as a sprocket around the balancing shaft. Each of the camshafts that are driven directly by the crankshaft then drive the opposed camshaft within each cylinder head via a transmission. The transmissions within each cylinder head between camshafts may be located at the forward or at the rear end thereof. Both the intake camshafts, or both the exhaust camshafts, or a combination thereof may be directly driven by the crankshaft sprocket. An improved breather oil separator is positioned between the balancing shaft and an induction system.

Camshaft operating system

An induction system for a V-type engine that permits a compact engine configuration and the tuning of two different intake passages for each cylinder for different engine speed ranges. The shorter high-speed intake passages are served by the plenum chamber adjacent the cylinder bank while some of the other intake passages are served by the adjacent plenum chamber and others are served by the other plenum chamber. The second intake passages all have the same length and the configuration is such so as to provide substantially equal flow lengths for the intake air and to substantially preclude adjacent firing cylinders drawing air from the same plenum chamber under at least some running conditions,

Intake system

Two embodiments of compact engine assemblies wherein the engine output shaft drives a driveshaft to which a flywheel is affixed. The flywheel is positioned closely adjacent one end of the engine output shaft and the engine output shaft drives the driveshaft by a gear drive that is positioned between the end main bearing of the engine output shaft and the first adjacent intermediate main bearing for limiting torsional stresses on the driveshaft.

Engine output drive arrangement

A vehicle and drive unit therefor including a transversely disposed engine located in an engine compartment. The engine is of the dry sump lubrication type and has a lubricant reservoir that extends between the cylinders and an air inlet opening to the engine compartment. The cylinders are inclined to the rear from a vertical plane at an acute angle and the engine crankshaft drives an output shaft that rotates in a plane disposed at an acute angle to the vertical and forwardly of the cylinder axis and at an acute angle to the cylinder axis. The oil scavenge and pressure pumps are driven from this shaft as are the front wheel axles which lie on the opposite side of the plane containing the cylinder axis from the output shaft axis.

Engine construction for vehicle

Several embodiments of power units particularly adapted for transverse engine operation for driving the wheels of a motor vehicle. In all of the embodiments, the axles are disposed on one side of the engine and a change speed transmission is located on the other side of the engine. The change speed transmission is driven from a gearing arrangement located between the ends of the crankshaft and in some embodiments torsional vibration dampers are included in the drive for the charge speed transmission. Vibration dampers are affixed to one or both ends of the crankshaft in some embodiments and an auxiliary shaft is driven from the transmission primary shaft for operating the camshafts of the engine.

Engine unit for vehicle

A vehicle and drive unit therefor including a transversely disposed engine located in an engine compartment. The cylinders are inclined to the rear from a vertical plane at an acute angle and the engine crankshaft drives an accessory output shaft that rotates in a plane disposed in an acute angle to the vertical and forwardly of the cylinder axis and at an acute angle to the cylinder axis. A two-stage camshaft drive arrangement is provided for driving a pair of overhead mounted camshafts and the two stages of this drive include flexible transmitters that are disposed on opposite sides of one of the cylinders so as to provide a compact assembly. An intermediate shaft is driven by this drive arrangement and is supported at one side of the cylinder head. One of the drives is disposed between a pair of ports in this side of the cylinder head and this drive is accessible through a removable cover plate positioned between the ports.

Camshaft drive arrangement for engine

A transversely disposed water cooled internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle that cooperates with a heat exchanger that is disposed transversely to the engine compartment and in parallel relationship with the engine. A cooling pump and thermostat assembly is mounted on the side of the engine between its ends and facing the heat exchanger for communicating the heat exchanger with the engine cooling jacket. Coolant is delivered first to the cylinder head and then through the cylinder head to the cylinder block cooling jacket. The coolant pump is driven off to an intermediate shaft driven by the timing mechanism for driving the camshafts of the engine.

A compact power unit for an internal combustion engine including a bearing arrangement for the crankshaft which includes a combined crankcase member and bearing cap that has integral bearing journals for the crankcase and which also forms at least in part the crankcase closure. An output shaft for powering a vehicle is also journaled by the cylinder block and crankcase member and is driven by an integral gear formed on one of the throws of the crankshaft. A balancing arrangement for accommodating this non balanced throw and for maintaining equal cylinder bore spacing is also employed.

A torque converter or fluid coupling is driven from this auxiliary shaft through a planetary transmission so as to reduce the speed at which the torque converter or fluid coupling is driven relative to the auxiliary shaft.

A vehicle and drive unit therefor including a transversely disposed engine located in an engine compartment. The cylinders are inclined to the rear from a vertical plane at an acute angle and the engine crankshaft drives an accessory shaft that rotates in a plane disposed at an acute angle to the vertical and forwardly of the cylinder axis and at an acute angle to the cylinder axis. Accessories are driven from this accessory shaft as are the front wheel axles which lie on the opposite side of the plane containing the cylinder axis from the output shaft axis. The accessory drive is disposed inwardly of the ends of the engine so as to provide a compact body and the engine body is recessed to receive the accessory drive so as to minimize the distance between the accessory shaft and the engine crankshaft.

Accessory drive arrangement for engine

A motor vehicle having a transversely positioned engine in a forwardly disposed engine compartment. The exhaust manifold is formed rearwardly of the engine and supplies exhaust gases to a catalyzer so that the engine will shield the exhaust manifold and catalyzer from cooling air flow. An intake manifold extends forwardly from the engine and engine accessories are disposed beneath the intake manifold and forwardly of the cylinders of the engine so as to shield the occupants of the vehicle from the noise of the accessories. In addition, a crushable plenum chamber extends across the front of the intake manifold and forwardly of the accessories for silencing and also to absorb impacts. The crushability of the plenum chamber causes it to slow the engine on impact for further safety protection.

An induction system for an internal combustion engine wherein each cylinder is served by a pair of intake pasasges having significantly different lengths for tuning them for different engine running requirements. A throttle valve arrangement controls the flow through the intake passages and the selection of the appropriate length for a given running condition.
