A platen is located at a print position in a sheet path leading from a sheet supply position through the print position to a sheet delivery position, and a thermal head having an edge portion at which a plurality of heating elements are arranged in a line is held by a head holder, wherein the thermal head is positioned so that the heating elements are kept in contact with the platen through the sheet path at the print position and that the heating elements are directed to a downstream side of the sheet path. With this arrangement, the heating elements of the thermal head can be located close to the sheet delivery position, so that just after a leading sheet after printed is delivered, the next sheet can be printed.

The selectively enabled processing system has at least one high-power consumption microprocessor which does not include a low-power consumption mode. The performing diagnostics means operate on at least a portion of the selectively enabled processing system whenever the power-supply is initially switched ON, and inhibit the power-supply upon diagnostics completion. The trigger selectively enables means for causing the microprocessor to consume the power-supply for a pre-set time period while processing, and then inhibit the power-supply upon expiration of the time period without re-performing diagnostics.

In the optical code reader, the reading control circuit includes a trigger switch for issuing a reading instruction with the reading window set within a preset distance from the 2-dimensional code, an illumination light source for applying an illumination light via the reading window for a preset period after the reading instruction is issued by the trigger switch, an image sensing section for sensing the image of the 2-dimensional code based on a reflected light obtained when the 2-dimensional code is illuminated by the illumination light source, and a light source controller for elongating the period of activation of the illumination light source when the reading instruction is continuously issued for a period longer than the preset period.

A printing apparatus includes N heating elements arranged in a line, and prints data on a label by each line by selectively supplying a current to these heating elements in accordance with printing data. The printing apparatus has a first memory for storing a plurality of line printing data constituting printing information including special information, a second memory for storing a plurality of line printing data constituting ordinary printing information, and a control unit which generates drive data corresponding to a logical sum of the one line printing data from the first memory and that from the second memory so as to cause the heating elements to be selectively energized during a first printing period of each line printing cycle. A battery backup circuit including n pieces of PC boards which are to be supplied with electric power from a main power source, switches to be turned on or off in response to the voltage of the main power source, a main backup battery for supplying each PC board with backup power when the main power source is cut off by the switch, and a backup battery having smaller capacity than the main backup battery provided on each of the PC boards and put in connection with the main backup battery with runaround preventing diodes interposed therebetween, so that each PC board may be independently supplied with backup power and provided with the even rate of electric power consumption, and that the battery backup circuit may be manufactured at low cost.

The present invention is equipped with a plurality of print buffers for inputting print data into a thermal head, wherein such print data are selectively fed to simply change the current on-time for energizing the heating elements of the thermal head relative to specific information out of the entire information to be printed, so that the specific information is printed emphatically in a particular color to become conspicuous, and simultaneously the contour of each specific character is edged in a basic color to be distinctly legible. Such edged print is attained by utilizing the gradient of the temperature distribution induced in the heating elements by the current on-time control system, hence eliminating the necessity of any edging print data to consequently simplify the control.

In the present invention, a two-color printing operation is performed on a label with dichromatic color-forming temperature characteristic by controlling the current on-time to energize heating elements of a thermal head and thereby emphasizing specific information printed in a different particular color, wherein each horizontal line segment of the character pattern of such specific information transverse to the label feed direction is set to be thick in width, so that the horizontal line segment is subjected to a sufficient amount of thermal energy that covers several print lines and brings out the desired particular color, hence achieving emphatic print in the different particular color with certainty.
