The disclosure herein describes a virtual extensible local area network (VXLAN) gateway. During operation, the VXLAN gateway receives, from a physical host, an Ethernet packet destined for a virtual machine residing in a remote layer-2 network broadcast domain that is different from a local layer-2 network broadcast domain where the physical host resides. The VXLAN gateway then determines a VXLAN identifier for the received Ethernet packet. The VXLAN gateway further encapsulates the Ethernet packet with the virtual extensible local area network identifier and an Internet Protocol (IP) header, and forwards the encapsulated packet to an IP network, thereby allowing the packet to be transported to the virtual machine via the IP network and allowing the remote layer-2 network broadcast domain and the local layer-2 network broadcast domain to be part of a common layer-2 broadcast domain.

Method and system for virtual and physical network integration

In a virtualized computer system in which a guest operating system runs on a virtual machine of a virtualized computer system, a computer-implemented method of providing the guest operating system with direct access to a hardware device coupled to the virtualized computer system via a communication interface, the method including: (a) obtaining first configuration register information corresponding to the hardware device, the hardware device connected to the virtualized computer system via the communication interface; (b) creating a passthrough device by copying at least part of the first configuration register information to generate second configuration register information corresponding to the passthrough device; and (c) enabling the guest operating system to directly access the hardware device corresponding to the passthrough device by providing access to the second configuration register information of the passthrough device.

Direct access to a hardware device for virtual machines of a virtualized computer system

MAC addresses are flexibly and dynamically allocated across groups of devices that need MAC addresses. MAC address pools are defined for the groups by non-overlapping ranges of MAC addresses. The range of MAC addresses defined for any pool may be shrunk to support an expansion of the range of MAC addresses of another pool. The maximum number of universally-administered MAC addresses that can be defined for any MAC address pool is greater than 2, and the maximum number of locally-administered MAC addresses that can be defined for any MAC address pool is greater than 2.

Method and apparatus for managing MAC address generation for virtualized environments

In a computer system, a method of controls interrupts which correspond to input/output (I/O) processing. For each delivery of an I/O completion interrupt, the method provides a recordation of a delivery time; identifies I/O completions for which deliveries of corresponding I/O completion interrupts involve deliveries of inter-processor interrupts; and for each of the identified I/O completions, accesses the recordation of the most recent delivery time to determine whether a selected period of time has elapsed since a last delivery of an inter-processor interrupt. As a response to a determination that the selected period has elapsed, an inter-processor interrupt is delivers. As a response to a determination that less than the duration of the selected period has elapsed, the method refrains from delivering an inter-processor interrupt.

Interrupt coalescing for outstanding input/output completions

A method and system for acquiring a quiesceing set of information associated with a virtual machine. A virtual machine is cloned. The cloned virtual machine has an associated persistent storage device. The state of the persistent storage device is transformed into a quiesced state of the cloned virtual machine by utilizing a shut-down process. The shut-down process is executed on the cloned virtual machine to quiesce the cloned virtual machine and the quiesceing set of information of the cloned virtual machine is automatically reduced to information stored on the persistent storage device.

Method and system for acquiring a quiesceing set of information associated with a virtual machine

Methods and systems described herein facilitate offload processing of encapsulated packets. A virtualization manager enables a virtual switch to be associated with a virtual overlay network. A virtual machine includes a virtual NIC that is connected to the virtual overlay network via the virtual switch. The virtualization manager is configured to encapsulate an outgoing packet sent from the virtual machine to the virtual overlay network. The virtualization manager is also configured to de-encapsulate an incoming packet sent from the virtual overlay network to the virtual machine. A physical NIC is configured to calculate at least one inner checksum based on the encapsulated outgoing packet and to verify at least one inner checksum included in the de-encapsulated incoming packet.
