A method of identifying femto base station handover targets for user equipment in a wireless telecommunications network, a femto gateway operable to execute that method and a computer program product. The method comprises the steps of: receiving an indication of user equipment entry into a geographical area served by a femto base station; storing user equipment entry information, generated from said received indication of user equipment entry; receiving an indicator from user equipment identifying a detected femto base station as a handover target; and correlating said indicator against said user equipment entry information to identify those femto base stations having entered user equipment as handover targets.

Handover control

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for providing radio access in a communication system by inter-working between at least two packet-based networks, such as heterogeneous cellular networks including a cellular network and an Internet Protocol (IP)-based wireless data network. The method includes enabling a packet routing path across the cellular and wireless data networks to provide a quality of service metric and an indication for mobility information associated with a user of a mobile device. The method further comprises transferring the quality of service metric and the indication for mobility information on the packet routing path in response to a service request across the networks. To provide wireless radio access, an IP-based communication system may use a wireless router, such as a base station router (BSR) and an inter-working unit. The inter-working unit may enable a packet routing path to provide a Quality of Service (QoS) metric and an indication for mobility information, such as mobility context information, associated with a user of a mobile device. In this way, instead of using a Mobile-IP client of the mobile device, the inter-working unit may provide radio access to the cellular network and the wireless data network using the wireless router.

Providing radio access between cellular and internet protocol-based wireless communication networks

A method of providing location information to a network application, a location server, a method of providing a trigger notification, a femto base station and a computer program product are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: receiving details of a triggering event which is to be notified to the network application, the triggering event being a registration of user equipment with a predetermined femto cell of the wireless telecommunications network; providing triggering information indicative of the triggering event to that femto base station providing wireless communications coverage to the predetermined femto cell to cause that femto base station to provide a trigger notification indicating when the triggering event occurs; and in response to receipt of the trigger notification from the femto base station, providing location information to the network application, the location information providing the network application with an indication of the user equipment and the predetermined femto cell, together with an indication of when the triggering event occurred. This enables the movement of user equipment into specific locations to be detected and provided to network application efficiently, without any subsequent location determination processing having to occur, which provides a low-power, scalable, accurate and non-invasive approach requiring no modification of user equipment.

Providing location information

In one aspect of the present invention, a method is provided for delivering multicast data to a plurality of mobile devices. The method comprises providing data using a first technique, such as multicast over HS-DSCH, to a first portion of the plurality of mobile devices, and providing data using a second technique, such as multicast over DCH or FACH, to a second portion of the plurality of mobile devices. The type of multicast technique used is based upon a quality of communications, such as the long term block error rate, that exists with respect to each of the mobile devices.
