A lubricating oil composition having less than 0.2 wt. % sulfur, less than 50 ppm chlorine, less than 50 ppm phosphorus, a NOACK volatility of 15 wt. % or less comprising an organo-molybdenum compound, an overbased calcium or magnesium salicylate, a dispersant and a supplemental antioxidant.

Lubricating oil composition

A lubricating oil composition comprising a) an oil of lubricating viscosity having a viscosity index of at least 95; b) at least one calcium detergent; c) at least one oil soluble molybdenum compound; d) at least one organic ashless nitrogen-free friction modifier; and e) at least one metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound, the composition having a Noack volatility of about 15 wt. % or less, from 0.05 to 0.6 wt. % calcium from the calcium detergent, molybdenum in an amount of at least 10 ppm from the molybdenum compound, and phosphorus from the metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound in an amount up to about 0.1 wt. %.

The lubricating compositions of the present invention are designed for use in a four stroke outboard marine engine and contain an oil of lubricating viscosity, an ashless dispersant, a metal detergent, a rust inhibitor, a relatively high amount of ZDDP, and an amount of a molybdenum compound sufficient to provide the composition with 15-1,000 ppm by mass of molybdenum. An amount of about 15 ppm to 1,000 ppm by mass of molybdenum from a molybdenum compound has been found to be effective as an antiwear agent in combination with the high levels of ZDDP.

Lubricating oil composition for outboard engines

Lubricating oil compositions exhibititing improved low temperature valve train wear performance with a lowered phosphorus content, which contain a reduced amount of a metal hydrocarbyl dithiophosphate, a molybdenum compound, a metal-free friction modifier and a phosphorus-free antioxidant.

Hydrocarbyl substituted C to C monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid, anhydrides or esters, e.g. polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride, preferably made by reacting polymer of C to C monoolefin, preferably polyisobutylene, having a molecular weight of about 1500 to 5,000, preferably with a C to C monounsaturated acid, anhydride or ester, preferably maleic anhydride, such that there are 1.05 to 1.25 dicarboxylic acid producing moieties per molecule of said olefin polymer used in the reaction mixture. The resulting materials are useful per se as oil additives, or may be further reacted with amines, alcohols, amino alcohols, boric acid, etc. to form dispersants.

Oil soluble dispersant additives useful in oleaginous compositions

A molybdenum-free lubricating oil composition exhibiting improved fuel economy and fuel economy retention properties, which comprises: (a) a base stock oil compound of at least 50 wt. % mineral oil, the base stock oil having a viscosity of 4.0-5.5 mm,/s at 100&deg; C., 95 wt. % or more saturates, 25 wt. % or less napthenics, a NOACK volatility of 15.9% or less, a kV of 4.0-5.5 mm,/s at 100&deg; C. and a viscosity index of at least 120; (b) at least one calcium detergent and (c) at least one organic friction modifier, wherein the composition has a NOACK volatility of about 15 wt. % or less and contains from about 0.058 to 0.58 wt. % calcium from the calcium detergent.

Molybdenum-free low volatility lubricating oil composition

A lubricating oil composition exhibiting improved low temperature anti-wear performance and improved fuel economy and fuel economy retention properties, which comprises: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) at least one calcium detergent; (c) at least one oil soluble molybdenum compound; (d) at least one nitrogen containing friction modifier; and (e) at least one zinc dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound, wherein the composition has a NOACK volatility of about 15.5 wt. % or less and contains from about 0.058 to 0.58 wt. % calcium from the calcium detergent, molybdenum in an amount up to about 350 ppm from a molybdenum compound, and phosphorus in an amount up to about 0.1 wt. % from a zinc dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound.

Hydrocarbyl substituted C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid, anhydrides or esters, e.g. polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride, preferably made by reacting polymer of C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 monoolefin, preferably polyisobutylene, having a molecular weight of about 1500 to 5,000, preferably with a C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated acid, anhydride or ester, preferably maleic anhydride, such that there are 1.05 to 1.25 dicarboxylic acid producing moieties per molecule of said olefin polymer used in the reaction mixture. The resulting materials are useful per se as oil additives, or may be further reacted with amines, alcohols, amino alcohols, boric acid, etc. to form dispersants.

A lubricating oil composition exhibiting improved fuel economy and wet clutch friction properties, which comprises: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) at least one calcium or magnesium overbased detergent; (c) an oil soluble dimeric molybdenum compound; (d) an oil soluble organic trinuclear molybdenum compound; (e) at least one zinc dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound, wherein the composition has a TBN of at least 3.6 from the calcium or magnesium overbased detergent, a NOACK volatility of about 15 wt. % or less, molybdenum in an amount up to about 350 ppm from the trinuclear molybdenum compound, molybdenum in an amount up to 2,000 ppm from the dimeric molybdenum compound, and phosphorus in an amount up to about 0.1 wt. % from a zinc dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound.

Lubricating oil composition containing two molybdenum additives

Novel dispersant mixtures are provided, having improved lubricating oil performance characteristics, comprising nitrogen or ester containing dispersants selected from the group consisting of oil soluble salts, amides, imides, oxazoline and esters or mixtures thereof, wherein a first dispersant comprises a long chain hydrocarbon substituted mono- and dicarboxylic acid or their anhydrides derived from polymers of C.sub.2 to C.sub.10 monoolefins wherein the polymer has a number average molecular weight of at least about 1300 and wherein the second dispersant component is derived from such polymers having a number average molecular weight of from about 700 to 1150. The relatively high molecular weight dispersant is provided with from about 1.05 to 1.25 moles per mole of polyolefin of an alpha or beta unsaturated C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid or anhydride or ester thereof. The relatively lower molecular weight dispersant is provided with from about 1.2 to 2.0 moles per mole of polyolefin of an alpha or beta unsaturated C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or ester thereof. It has been found that mixtures of such high molecular weight-low functionality dispersants and low molecular weight-high functionality dispersants provides a dispersant, suitable for use in oleaginous materials such as lubricating oils, which provide surprisingly improved engine performance properties.

Dispersant additive mixtures for oleaginous compositions

A lubricating oil having an ashless nitrogenous TBN source together with ash containing detergent having a TBN in excess of 100, a source of magnesium, and metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate with predominantly or exclusively secondary hydrocarbyl groups is described. It comprises a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity having a sulfated ash content between 0.35 and 2 mass percent and A) a nitrogenous TBN source selected from the group consisting of ashless nitrogen containing dispersants, ashless nitrogen containing dispersant viscosity modifiers, oil soluble aliphatic, oxyalkyl, or arylalkyl amines and mixtures thereof; B) a metal salt of an oil soluble acid having a TBN in excess of 100; C) at least 500 ppm (mass) magnesium; and D) at least one metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate. The nitrogenous TBN source provides at least about 1.5 TBN to the finished lubricant. The metal salt of an oil soluble acid provides at least about 40% of the total TBN of the composition. At least 50 mole per cent of the hydrocarbyl groups on the dithiophosphate are secondary. Overbased magnesium sulfonate may be used as the metal salt of an oil soluble sulfonic acid having a TBN in excess of 100 and the additive providing at least 500 ppm (mass) magnesium. The lubricant may be free of aromatic amines having at least two aromatic groups attached directly to the nitrogen. It may have at least 100 ppm (mass) boron and at least 1000 ppm (mass) phosphorous. The boron-to-nitrogen ratio is at least 0.1.

Crankcase lubricant for modern heavy duty diesel and gasoline fueled

A method for testing a sample for soot-related viscosity increase comprising: (a) preparing the sample which comprises a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, (b) measuring the viscosity of the sample (c) preparing a stable sample/paste dispersion of the sample and a carbon black paste, (d) equilibrating the sample/paste dispersion, and (e) measuring the viscosity of the sample/paste dispersion, and a method for predicting physical effects of soot-loading on a sample in a test which measures viscosity increase comprising: (1) measuring viscosity increase for a series of reference fluids in the test, (2) measuring viscosity increase for the series of reference fluids in a method having steps (a) to (e), (3) developing a curve, (4) evaluating the sample using the method having steps (a) to (e), and (5) interpolating a viscometric effect for the sample using the curve.

Method for testing soot-related viscosity increase

According to the present invention, oleaginous compositions having improved stability are provided, wherein high molecular weight ashless dispersants and metal detergents are pre-blended at a temperature of at least 100.degree. C. for a period of from 1 to 10 hours, cooled to at least 85.degree. C. and admixed with additional additives, including oil soluble copper antioxidants and zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate antiwear agents.

Haze resistant dispersant-detergent compositions

This invention is to compositions containing metal salts, preferably copper or zinc salts, of polyalkenyl substituted monounsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids which may be used as a compatibilizing material for mixtures of high molecular weight dispersants, high total base number detergents, and various antiwear or antioxidant materials.

Oil soluble additives useful in oleaginous compositions

According to the present invention, oleaginous compositions having improved stability are provided, wherein high molecular weight ashless dispersants and metal detergents are preblended at a temperature of at least 100.degree. C. for a period of from 1 to 10 hours, cooled to at least 85.degree. C. and admixed with additional additives, including oil soluble copper antioxidants and zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate antiwear agents.
