A system for optimizing placement of a second wellbore relative to a first wellbore utilizing i) steam injected into the first wellbore in combination with a temperature sensor located in the second wellbore and ii) electromagnetic (EM) fields emanating from the first wellbore in combination with an EM sensor in the second wellbore. The magnetic measurements made with the EM sensor are utilized to determine azimuthal placement of a wellbore, while temperature measurements made with the temperature sensor are utilized to determine distance for placement of the wellbore.

Systems and methods for obtaining ranging measurements are described herein. An example method includes injecting a currentinto a formation from a first boreholeto induce an electromagnetic fieldwithin the formation. The currentmay be received at a second borehole. A method of steering a drill bit while drilling a wellbore can include periodically delivering an impact to the drill bit as the drill bit is rotated by a drill string. The impact may be delivered to the drill bit when an axis of the drill bit is oriented in a desired azimuthal direction relative to an axis of the drill string. Another method of steering a drill bit while drilling a wellbore may include interconnecting a bend in a drill string between an impact tool and the drill bit, and periodically delivering an impact from the impact tool to the drill bit as the drill bit is rotated by the drill string. A directional drilling system can include a drill string having a bend interconnected therein, an impact tool, and a drill bit, the bend being interconnected in the drill string between the drill bit and the impact tool.

According to aspects of the present disclosure, a magnetic ranging system is described herein. The magnetic ranging system may comprise a downhole apparatus tool () that is sized to couple to a drill string (). The downhole apparatus () may be included, for example, near-bit within the bottom assembly (BHA). A transmitter () and a receiver () may be coupled to the downhole apparatus (). The system may also comprise a power management system () coupled to the downhole apparatus (). In certain embodiments, the power management system () may selectively provide power to the transmitter () from a first power source () or a second power source () based, at least in part, on an estimated distance to a target well.
