2-Haloalkyl-3-oxo-4-substituted quinazolines represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkyl substituted with one to three of the same or different halogens, phenyl or phenyl substituted with 1 to 3 of the same or different substituents selected from a group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, nitro, cyano, or lower alkyl substituted with one to three of the same or different halogens, R.sup.1 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, or lower alkyl substituted with one to three of the same or different halogens, Y.sub.1, Y.sub.2, Y.sub.3 and Y.sub.4 are independently selected from a group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, nitro, cyano, or lower alkyl substituted with one to three of the same or different halogens and X is fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, cyano, lower alkoxy, thiocyano and ##STR2## where R.sup.3 and R.sup.2 are the same or different lower alkyl possess fungicidal and algicidal activity.

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is aliphatic hydrocarbyl, alicyclic hydrocarbyl or aryl suitably substituted, if desired, or a heterocyclic group, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or alkyl, R.sup.2 is alkyl or alkoxy, R.sup.3 is ##STR2## wherein a is 0 or 1, R.sup.4 is hydrogen or CW'.sub.3, the W' being hydrogen or halogen, Z is halogen and X is halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, acetoxy, carbethoxyalkoxy, phenoxy, alkylthio, carbethoxyalkylthio, phenylthio, phosphono, dithiophosphonoxy, phosphoramido, isocyanato, isothiocyanato, alkyl- and dialkylthiocarbamoylthio, alkyl- and dialkylcarbamoyloxy, alkylsulfonyl, etc., have herbicidal activity.

In vivo and in vitro cellulose fermentation by cellulose-digesting microorganisms is increased by conducting the fermentation in the presence of a minor amount of a 2-(chloromethyldithio)acetic acid.

A compound having the formula ##STR1## wherein R and R.sup.1 is lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, lower alkoxyalkylene, cyclopentyl, or cyclohexyl, and the other is aryl or substituted aryl; R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 haloalkyl; R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 can, each independent of the other, be any of the substituents R and R.sup.1 collectively can be and one of R.sup.3 or R.sup.4 can also be hydrogen or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined can be piperidinyl, pyrrolidinyl or morpholinyl. The compounds can be prepared by reaction of the corresponding 1'-chloroalkylimidazolidine with the appropriate primary or secondary amine. The compounds are useful as fungicides and selective herbicides.
