A coiled tubing injector apparatus for use in inserting coiled tubing into a well, temporarily suspending the coiled tubing, and removing the coiled tubing from the well is described. The apparatus includes a base with a pair of spaced carriages extending upwardly therefrom. The base is attached to a superstructure. The carriages each have a gripper chain drive system rotatably mounted thereon and movable therewith. An actuation and linkage system allows the carriages to move toward and away from one another in a lateral or transverse direction with respect to the superstructure and the base. Thus, the gripper chain systems can be engaged or disengaged from tubing extending through the apparatus. Each of the carriages are pivotally attached to the base with a load pin which extends through lugs attached to the base and corresponding lugs extending down from the carriage.

Coiled tubing injector apparatus

The coiled tubing handling apparatus includes a base and a frame. First and second pairs of plate members are coupled to the frame. A drive sprocket and an idler sprocket are coupled to the first pair of plate members for supporting a first continuous gripper chain with gripper members for movement along a first path. A drive sprocket and an idler sprocket are coupled to the second pair of plate members for supporting a second continuous chain with gripper members for movement along a second path. A drive system is provided for moving the gripper chains together along the two paths for gripping and moving a tube. Two pairs of idler sprockets are coupled to each of the first and second pairs of plate members for supporting a linear bearing chain within each of the two gripper chains. A linear bearing race engages each linear bearing chain for causing the two linear bearing chains to engage the two gripper chains respectively for causing the two gripper chains to move linearly along the first and second paths. A unique slack adjusting means is provided for each of the linear bearing chains and a unique slack adjuster is provided for each of the gripper chains. The base includes structure which allows one pair-of plate members to be moved laterally relative to the other pair of plate members and also which allows both pairs of plate members to be moved laterally relative to the frame.

Coiled tubing handling apparatus

A twin carriage coiled tubing injector apparatus for use in inserting coiled tubing into a well, temporarily suspending the coiled tubing, and removing the tubing from the well. The apparatus includes a superstructure with a pair of spaced carriages disposed therein. The carriages each have a gripper chain drive system rotatably mounted thereon and movable therewith. An actuation and linkage system allows the carriage to be moved toward and away from one another in a transverse direction with respect to the superstructure. This movement allows gripper chain systems to be engaged or disengaged from tubing extending through the apparatus. A roller chain system is disposed in each of the carriages and is adapted for engagement and support of the gripper chain systems as the gripper chain systems are engaged with the tubing. A timing gear system may optionally be provided to insure that the rotational speed of the gripper chain systems are substantially constant.

Twin carriage tubing injector apparatus

A coiled tubing service unit and method for oil and gas wells including a string of components extending above ground in coaxial alignment with said well and including an injector for injecting coiled tubing into the well and a sealing unit for preventing the flow of pressurized oil and gas from the well. The sealing unit is adapted to be disconnected from the string of components and removed from the coaxial alignment to permit a relatively large-diameter tool assembly to be inserted therein. The sealing unit can then be repositioned and connected in the string of components and the coiled tubing can be reinserted into the string, connected to the tool and driven into the well.

Coiled tubing drilling and service unit and method for oil and gas wells

An electrical cable assembly (10) comprising a cable core (12) and filler layer (16) encased in longitudinally welded reeled tubing (23) so as to restrict relative axial and longitudinal motion between the cable core (12) and reeled tubing (23). Small-diameter tubing (24) is optionally provided as part of the cable core (12) to facilitate the delivery of fluids such as lubricants and corrosion inhibitors to downhole equipment. A method is disclosed for deploying electrical cables in deep wells through use of the subject apparatus.

Electrical cable in reeled tubing

A large diameter reel having a large diameter hollow drum with a flange at each end about which a flexible elongate member, such as coil tubing, electrical conductor cable, or the like, may be wound, the reel having no shaft, but instead, having a large central opening extending therethrough, and having a gear located in the opening or on at least one or both of the reel's flanges. A carrier, such as a skid, trailer or semi-trailer, is provided with rollers for supporting the reel upon edge and with a driving gear meshable with the reel gear for rotating the reel. The trailer or semi-trailer may be provided with a hole in the bed thereof to accommodate the reel in an inset position to permit such vehicles with a reel thereon to freely pass beneath highway overpasses, and other overhangs. Methods of supporting such reels on such carriers are also provided.

Reels and carriers therefor

Apparatus for pressurized cleaning of well flow conductors. The apparatus has a non-rotating inner mandrel, an adapter to connect the inner mandrel to a work string, a rotating housing on the exterior of the inner mandrel, and a nozzle body attached to the housing. An alternative embodiment of the invention allows cleaning tools to be attached to a modified nozzle body and rotated therewith. Fluid pressure flowing through the inner mandrel will cause the housing to rotate relative to the inner mandrel. Rotation is used to direct fluid jets in the nozzle body towards different portions of the interior of the flow conductor. Rotation of a cleaning tool can also be used for combined mechanical and hydraulic drilling to remove deposits from within a well flow conductor.

Apparatus and methods for cleaning a well

Apparatus for pressurized cleaning of flow conductors. The apparatus has a first mandrel and a second mandrel telescoped therein. A cleaning tool can be attached to the second mandrel. Changes in fluid pressure flowing through the mandrels will cause the second mandrel to rotate relative to the first mandrel. Rotation is used to direct fluid jets in the cleaning tool towards different portions of the interior of the flow conductor. Rotation of the cleaning tool can also be used for hydraulic drilling of deposits within the flow conductor.

Improved coil tubing injection apparatus for servicing wells by running coil tubing thereinto for circulating fluids through the well and having the ability to rotate the coil tubing for performing drilling operations. The apparatus can readily provide concurrent longitudinal and rotational movement of the coil tubing. Methods of servicing wells involving such movement of coil tubing are disclosed.

Apparatus and method for rotating coil tubing in a well

A hydraulic power pack for supplying hydraulic fluid under pressure for operating apparatus such as hydraulic workover units used in servicing oil and gas wells. The power pack provides substantially constant hydraulic power input to the driven apparatus over a wide range of pressures and flow rates. The power pack includes a constant speed engine, a gear box driven by the engine, a bank of positive fixed displacement pumps of varying sizes driven by the gear box and having discharge ports connected with a common discharge manifold, a hydraulic fluid reservoir, an intake manifold between the reservoir and the pumps, a return line to the reservoir, a recirculating line connected between the discharge from each of the pumps and the return line, and an unloading valve in each of the recirculating lines operable responsive to the pressure in the discharge manifold for recirculating each of the pumps to the reservoir at a predetermined pressure value. Each of the unloading valves is set to open at a different pressure ranging from a minimum at which all of the pumps discharge to the discharge manifold to a maximum above which all of the pumps recirculate to the reservoir. The unloading valves are set to operate in graduated sequence with all the pumps discharging to the manifold below a first minimum pressure with one pump automatically recirculating to the reservoir as each predetermined pressure increase increment is reached until at the last operating stage only a single pump is discharging to the manifold and above that stage all pumps recirculate to the reservoir. The power pack permits operating a hydraulic workover unit automatically providing maximum lifting force at a minimum speed to minimum lifting force at a maximum speed.

Hydraulic power pack

Well tubing handling apparatus useful for running and pulling tubing in a well bore and drilling a well bore including a main frame assembly, a pulling and snubbing assembly, a ladder assembly, and a work platform assembly. The apparatus is quickly assembled and torn down. The main frame assembly includes a base, telescoping non-load bearing guide tubes, a load-bearing mast, fixed slips, and winches and sheave and cable assemblies for manipulating pipe joints between handling positions in the apparatus and a pipe rack. The pulling and snubbing assembly includes a hydraulic cylinder connectible at the free end of the piston on the frame base, sheave mounted drive cables secured on the cylinder, traveling slips mounted on the drive cables, and an anchor between the drive cables and the main frame so that as the cylinder is raised and lowered the cables are driven around pulleys raising and lowering the traveling slips. A valve block is mounted on the base end of the cylinder for connection with a source of hydraulic power. The frame and pulling and snubbing assemblies include guide structure for quick coupling of the assemblies together. The apparatus may be fully supported on a wellhead.

Well tubing handling apparatus

A well tubing handling system for running and pulling well tubing including a flange assembly for coupling the system on a wellhead, a central telescoping stabilizer tube assembly mounted on the flange assembly and comprising meshing splined outer lower and concentric upper inner tubes, an upper traveling slip assembly secured on the upper end of the upper inner stabilizer tube for gripping well tubing for raising or lowering the tubing through the stabilizer tube assembly, two sets of diametrically opposed hydraulic cylinder assemblies having piston rods connected with the upper traveling slips for raising and lowering the slips, two sets of lower slips mounted in axial alignment below the stabilizer tube assembly for holding the tubing against upward or downward movement while resetting the upper traveling slips, and a work platform mounted on the upper end of the stabilizer tube assembly for operators and the necessary control panels and the like. The sets of cylinder assemblies are of different sizes to provide maximum operating speeds at selected handling capacities. The stabilizer tube assembly permits maximum extension of the piston and cylinder assemblies with minimum twisting and lateral deflection and, thus, maximum stability. Two optional hydraulic control systems are disclosed to provide a substantial number of snubbing and pulling speeds. A variable volume hydraulic pump operated at maximum discharge volume and pressure is used to drive the cylinder assemblies with the maximum speed of snubbing and pulling at each required capacity being obtained pressurizing selected chambers of selected pairs of cylinder assemblies.
