A method of forming chloro-substituted silanes from the reaction of an alkoxysilane with a chlorinating agent in the optional presence of a catalyst is provided. More specifically, chloro-substituted silanes, including but not limited to silicon tetrachloride, are formed by reacting a chlorinating agent, such as thionyl chloride, with an alkylalkoxysilane having the formula (R'O)SiR, where R and R&#x2032; are independently selected alkyl groups comprising one or more carbon atoms and x is 0, 1, 2, or 3. The catalyst may be dimethylformamide, (chloromethylene)dimethyliminium chloride, or triethylamine, among others. The chloro-substituted silane formed in the reaction along with several by-products has the formula (R&#x2032;O)SiRCl; where x is 0, 1, 2, or 3 and y is 1, 2, 3, or 4. One of the by-products of the reaction is an alkyl chloride.

Alternative methods for the synthesis of organosilicon compounds

Pharmaceutical compositions of phthalocyanine compounds with a structure according to Formula (I) are described. Phthalocyanines are photosensitizer compounds having a phthalocyanine ring system that can be used for photodynamic therapy. Different phthalocyanines and phthalocyanine salts are shown to have useful characteristics such as water solubility, oil solubility, or tunable photostability. Formulations of phthalocyanines and phthalocyanine salts that can be used for topical and systemic administration are described.

The invention relates to topical pharmaceutical compositions comprising a phthalocyanine, wherein a diamagnetic metal ion moiety is either coordinated or covalently bound to the phthalocyanine core. A method for synthesizing an apophyllite-derived 3-cyanopropyldimethylsiloxy-5-hexenyldimethylsiloxy sheet polymer (A-CM.sub.2 -HEM.sub.2); an apophyllite-derived 3-cyanopropyldimethylsiloxy-vinyldimethylsiloxy sheet polymer (A-CM.sub.2 -VM.sub.2); and an apophyllite-derived 3-cyanopropyldimethylsiloxy-n-decyldimethylsiloxy sheet polymer (A-CM.sub.2 -DM.sub.2). These polymers form gels with simple polar solvents such as acetone and therefore can be easily processed. The first two of the polymers, i.e., A-CM.sub.2 -HEM.sub.2 and A-CM.sub.2 -VM.sub.2, form gels with polar solvents carrying olefinic linkages, and these gels can be crosslinked into sheet composites having fully exfoliated organosilicon sheets in an organic matrix.

A simple, flexible, convenient method for making silicon phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines by inserting silicon into metal-free phthalocyanines and metal-free naphthalocyanines is provided. The method comprises: providing a metal-free phthalocyanine or metal-free naphthalocyanine; reacting the metal-free phthalocyanine or metal-free naphthalocyanine with HSiCl.sub.3 to provide a reaction product; then reacting the reaction product with water; and extracting a silicon phthalocyanine or a silicon naphthalocyanine. The invention also relates to novel phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines. The phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines are useful as photosensitizers and as dyes.

Methods for inserting silicon into phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines

The present invention provides improved methods for synthesizing phthalocyanines, particularly HOSiPcOSi(CH.sub.3).sub.2 (CH.sub.2).sub.3 N(CH.sub.3).sub.2, which do not involve photolysis, and which produces purity of at least about 95%, and in the preferred embodiment of the first method of synthesis provide a yield of greater than about 70% and typically greater than 80%. The first method involves a method for synthesizing a phthalocyanine compound comprising the following steps: providing a phthalocyanine precursor having a central silicon; adding a first aminosiloxy ligand to the central silicon of the phthalocyanine precursor; adding a second aminosiloxy ligand to the central silicon of the phthalocyanine precursor; displacing the second aminosiloxy ligand by an organic acid ligand, preferably Cl.sub.3 CCOO ligand; then displacing the Cl.sub.3 CCOO ligand with an HO ligand. The second method for making Pc4 is a method for synthesizing a phthalocyanine compound comprising the following steps: providing a phthalocyanine precursor having a central silicon; providing a siloxy ligand with an iodo group; adding a first and second siloxyiodo ligand to the central silicon of the phthalocyanine precursor; displacing the second siloxyiodo ligand by an organic acid, preferably a Cl.sub.3 CCOO ligand; then displacing the a Cl.sub.3 CCOO ligand with an HO ligand; and then displacing the iodo group with a dimethylamino group.

Organopolysiloxane sheet or tube polymers are made by contacting a sheet or tube silicate with an alkenyl group containing chlorosilane to form an alkenylsiloxy polymer, and subsequently contacting the alkenylsiloxy sheet or tube polymer with a hydrosilane or hydrosiloxane in the presence of a hydrosilation catalyst, to catalyze a reaction between the alkenyl group on the alkenylsiloxy polymer and hydride functionality on the hydrosilane or hydrosiloxane. Silylalkoxysiloxane sheet or tube polymers are made by contacting a sheet or tube silicate with an acidic solution of an alkenyl alcohol to form a polymeric sheet or tube alkenyloxysiloxane, and subsequently contacting the alkenyloxysiloxane with a hydrosilane or hydrosiloxane in the presence of a hydrosilation catalyst, to catalyze a reaction between the alkenyl group on the alkenyloxysiloxane and hydride functionality on the hydrosilane or hydrosiloxane.

The present invention relates to a series of novel phthalocyanine compositions (or compounds) suitable for use as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy. Specifically, the invention relates to a series of new aluminum (Al) germanium (Ge), gallium (Ga), tin (Sn) and/or silicon (Si) phthalocyanines having substituted amine or quaternary ammonium axial ligands attached to the central metal, and the use of these new phthalocyanine compositions for the treatment of cancer through photosensitization.
