In a two-stage wet waste burner, a first-stage combustion chamber has a symmetrical grate arrangement. The grate comprises spaced individual upright air supply tubes with flat horizontal upper surfaces swept by ash-removal plates. The height and width of the air supply tubes are selected to provide an upper surface profile approximating the natural angle of repose of the waste. Twin waste feed distribution augers span the chamber and rotate in mating troughs. The axis of rotation of each auger is sloped so that the discharge end of the auger is higher than the feed inlet end, and the trough sidewalls are inclined downwardly from the inlet end to the discharge end; these attributes promote even discharge of waste across the span of the chamber. Vertical walls of the air supply tubes are provided with air ports for supplying combustion air, the vertical orientation of the apertures and a degree of shielding of the upper surfaces of the air supply tubes inhibit clogging of the air ports. Drivers for the ash-removal plates comprise pendular arms each pivoting about an upper pivot point lying substantially in the vertical plane of symmetry, each arm being pivotally connected directly or indirectly to the ash removers. A burner of the foregoing type may be combined with a dryer for drying a portion of the waste and with a mixer that mixes dried waste with raw wet waste and feeds the mixed waste to the burner. The mixed waste can be efficiently burned yet can be efficiently conveyed. Such combination is particularly suitable for combustion of sewage sludge.

Two-stage wet waste gasifier and burner

A combustion method in which heat is generated from particulate laden combustible gas containing mineral matter created from gasifying waste wood, coke or other combustible material in which the waste is fed into a pile, under-fire combustion air dries and gasifies the waste, oxidizing the fixed carbon in a first chamber to generate heat at a temperature less than the melting temperature of the non-combustible material so as not to form slag, adding air in the first chamber in an amount less than stoichiometric with the air introduced in a swirling fashion to move the particulate laterally away from the discharge of the primary chamber, impeding the movement of this particulate also by adding secondary combustion air in a downward swirling direction in the secondary chamber so that very little non-combustible material reaches the second chamber where melting can occur.

Method for generating heat from waste fuel

A combustion apparatus having primary and secondary combustion chambers burns waste wood with an optional third chamber. The third chamber is used to blend the combustion products down to the desired process temperature. High pressure swirl air is admitted tangentially to the primary chamber above a burning fuel pile. The swirl air reacts with a small proportion of the pyrolized gases to maintain a steady temperature at the exit from the primary chamber. The swirl air also centrifugally separates particulate matter from the gas stream leaving the primary chamber. The total quantity of underfire and swirl air is closely controlled to maintain substoichiometric conditions in the primary chamber. Secondary air complete combustion of the pyrolized volatiles in the secondary chamber. The secondary air is admitted tangentially to establish a rotating mass of relatively cool combustion air adjacent to the walls of the secondary combustion chamber. The air reacts with the volatiles at the base of the secondary chamber, after the volatiles have first been forced radially outward by the presence of a discshaped flame holder in the inlet to the chamber.
