Process for preserving wood using fluoro-materials

This invention provides compositions for treating fibrous substrates to render those substrates durably repellent to water and oil and durably resistant to dry soil comprising a 1) fluorochemical urethane formed by reacting a tri- or higher order isocyanate with a fluorochemical monofunctional compound and optionally a non-fluorinated aliphatic monofunctional compound; and 2) a fluorochemical polymeric surfactant. The present invention also provides a method of treating fibrous substrates to render those substrates durably repellent to water and oil and durably resistant to dry soil comprising application of the aforementioned composition to a fibrous substrate with optionally one or more stainblocker compounds such as acrylic and methacrylic acid polymers and copolymers, sulfonated phenol-formaldehyde resins, and styrene-maleic anhydride polymers and copolymers, said application of the composition taking place either coincident with or following application of the hydrophilic anti-staining compound or compounds to the substrate. Fibrous substrates treated according to this method and fibrous substrates treated with the aforementioned compositions are also disclosed.

Repellent fluorochemical compositions

This invention provides compositions and methods for treating fibrous substrates to render those substrates durably repellent to water and oil and durably resistant to dry soil comprising a fluorochemical urethane formed by reacting a tri- or higher order isocyanate with a fluorochemical monofunctional compound; and optionally a non-fluorinated aliphatic monofunctional compound.

A process is described which imparts exceptional antisoiling, anti-staining and repellent properties to carpets. The process makes use of a water-based exhaustion process wherein the water-based treating solution contains (1) glassy fluorochemical material, glassy hydrocarbon material, or combinations thereof; (2) a stainblocking material; (3) a polyvalent metal salt, acid, or combinations thereof; and (4) water. Subsequent to exhaustion, the wet treated carpet is heated, usually in a steaming step, rinsed, and dried in a dry heat oven.

Treatment of fibrous substrates to impart repellency, stain resistance, and soil resistance

Coated porous materials that exhibit air permeability and repellency to liquids having a surface tension at least equal to or greater than 20 dynes/cm which are suitable for making ileostomy vent filters, transdermal drug substrates, agricultural and medical apparel, as well as paint and chemical protective garments. The coating for the porous material is applied as a curable composition containing fluorocarbon urethane precursors which are cross-linked in situ.

Coated porous materials

A low melting, high solids spin finish composition is provided that can be readily applied to synthetic fibers during the fiber-making process. The spin finish solids, which make up at least about 70% by weight of the spin finish composition, comprise nonionic hydrocarbon surfactant components, such as polyoxyalkylenes, which have a <HLB> value of from about 2 to 13 and a melting point within the range of about 25&deg; C. to about 140&deg; C. In some embodiments, the spin finish composition also includes select fluorochemicals.

Process of drawing fibers

A high solids spin finish composition is provided which includes a nonionic hydrocarbon surfactant and which has a <FLB> value of less than 11 and a <HLB> value within the range of about 2 to 13.

The invention also relates to a hindered phenolic antioxidant capable of being reacted into the polymer. The invention also relates to a dry cleaning solvent resistant waterproof, moisture-vapor permeable material such as a laminate or a unitary sheet material. The unitary sheet material comprises a microporous polymeric matrix having pores comprising continuous passages extending through its thickness and opening into the opposite surfaces thereof, the passages being sufficiently filled with a moisture-vapor permeable, water-impermeable, hydrophilic material which comprises the polymer having the antioxidant reacted into its structure which prevents the passage of water and other liquids through the unitary sheet material while readily permitting moisture vapor transmission therethrough rendering the sheet material breathable. The unitary sheet material is made by causing a liquid composition comprising a hydrophilic material precursor to flow into the pores of the matrix, then causing the conversion thereof to solid hydrophilic material.

The invention relates to a dry cleaning solvent resistant hydrophilic urethane polymer having about 0.5 to 10 weight percent of a hindered phenolic antioxidant reacted into its structure. Stretchable laminate constructions based on an elastic fabric and a substantially non-elastic film which are held in intimate contact with one another by means of a discontinuous pattern of adhesive are disclosed. When the laminate constructions of the invention are in a relaxed state, the length of the film between adjacent adhesion points along the direction of stretch of the elastic fabric is substantially equivalent to the length of the elastic fabric between the same adhesion points when the construction is extended to its elastic recovery limit. A preferred embodiment of the invention utilizes waterproof breathable non-elastic membranes to produce laminate constructions suitable for clean room and protective garment applications.

A waterproof, moisture-vapor permeable unitary sheet material comprises a microporous polymeric matrix having pores comprising continuous passages extending through its thickness and opening into the opposite surfaces thereof, the passages being sufficiently filled with a moisture-vapor permeable, water-impermeable, hydrophilic material to prevent the passage of water and other liquids through the unitary sheet material while readily permitting moisture vapor transmission therethrough rendering the sheet material breathable. The unitary sheet is made by causing a liquid composition comprising the hydrophilic material or precursor thereof to flow into the pores of the matrix, then causing the conversion thereof to solid hydrophilic material.

Waterproof, moisture-vapor permeable sheet material and method of making

A colorimetric indicator in sheet form comprising an indicator substance, a high surface area carrier for said indicator substance, and a self-adhering clay mineral binder coated on a backing is disclosed. The colorimetric indicator is useful for personal monitors, as end of service life indicators for respirators, thin layer chromatography plates, and vapor transfer sheets.
