An optically active compound represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents an alkyl group having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms or an alkoxy group having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms; A represents ##STR2## or ##STR3## wherein ring ##STR4## represents a nitrogen-containing hetero-aromatic ring; n and m each represents 0 or 1; R.sup.2 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms; and C* is an asymmetric carbon atom. The compound of formula (I) exhibits excellent physicochemical stability, a low temperature range for the chiral smectic C phase when used either alone or in combination with other compounds, and a rapid response.

Optically active compound

A terpolymer whose backbone chain is composed of the following building units is described: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 each is H or an alkyl group selected from among CH.sub.3 and C.sub.2 H.sub.5. There is disclosed a novel 4,8-dimethylbicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivative represented by the formula [I]: ##STR1## wherein X and Y have the same meanings as defined in the specification. Crude 2-methyleneglutaronitrile containing as impurities a metal halide, a trialkylamine, and the trimer or a higher polymer of acrylonitrile can be effectively purified by treating the crude 2-methyleneglutaronitrile with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or nitric acid of a concentration of 1 to 30% by weight and then subjecting the treated methyleneglutaronitrile to vacuum distillation.

Method for purification of 2-methyleneglutaronitrile

From an acrylonitrile-dimerization liquid product prepared by contacting acrylonitrile with a specific catalyst composed of a metal halide and a trialkylamine, 2-methyleneglutaronitrile is efficiently recovered by a process which comprises contacting the reaction liquid product under stirring with benzene, toluene or xylene as well as with water in specific ratios, and then separating the resulting aromatic hydrocarbon layer from the mixture to recover 2-methyleneglutaronitrile.

New substituted aryl ethylenes are disclosed which are produced by dehydration of the corresponding .alpha.- or .beta.-(substituted aryl)ethyl alcohols or by dehydrohalogenation of the corresponding .alpha.- or .beta.-(substituted aryl)ethyl halides.
