A reading device includes an inlet port for a boarding pass, a reading section for reading data recorded on part of the boarding pass, and a feeding section for transporting a boarding pass from the inlet port to the reading section. The reading device further includes a rotating section for holding a boarding pass fed thereto and rotating together with the boarding pass, and a control circuit for checking the orientation of the boarding pass inserted into the inlet port, and instructing the feeding section to temporarily feed the boarding pass to the rotating section and instructing said rotating section to turn over the boarding pass when it is detected that the boarding pass has been inserted in a particular incorrect orientation.

A printing apparatus comprises a step motor for feeding paper in a paper feed direction, an interface for inputting printing data including bar code data, an image buffer for storing bit image data representing at least first and second bar codes which correspond to the same bar code data input by the interface, a thermal head having a row of heating elements perpendicular to the paper feed direction for printing the bit image data stored in the image buffer in units of lines on the paper, and a control circuit for driving the step motor to feed the paper in order to print the bit image data, and for driving the thermal head each time the paper is fed by a preset amount. In the printing apparatus, the first and second bar codes represented by the bit image data are constituted by a set of bar code elements parallel to the paper feed direction and a set of bar code elements perpendicular thereto, respectively, and the control circuit drives the step motor to feed the paper at a first speed in order to print a portion of the bit image data corresponding to the first bar code and at a second speed slower than the first speed in order to print a portion of the bit image data corresponding to the second bar code.

A home position detecting apparatus includes a detector to generate a detection signal when the home position of a print wheel is detected and a stepping motor to rotate the print wheel in response to a drive signal. This home position detecting apparatus further includes a control circuit which gives the drive signal having a specific phase to the stepping motor in response to the detection signal from the detector.

An electronic typewriter includes a plurality of character keys, a specification selector, a printer circuit, and a memory for storing a plurality of specification tables, each having a plurality of key data. A data processing circuit detects a determined one of the plurality of specification tables in response to a selection signal from the specification selector, and reads out the corresponding key data from the specification table selected in accordance with the operation of the character keys, thereby driving the printer circuit in accordance with the key data. The specification selector includes a plurality of selection switches formed on the same keyboard together with the plurality of character keys.

A stepping motor driving circuit includes a plurality of switching transistors having their emitter-collector paths connected to the corresponding ends of motor coils, a plurality of diodes having their anodes connected to the above-mentioned ends of the motor coils and their cathodes connected to a common terminal, and a braking circuit connected between the cathode of the diodes and the other end of the motor coils, in which the switching transistors are sequentially turned ON to permit excitation currents to pass through the corresponding motor coils. The braking circuit has a variable effective impedance.
