A liquid-crystal display device includes red pixels with red color filters, green pixels with green filters, blue pixels with blue filters, and a light projecting unit to project light upon the pixels. The light projecting unit includes first and second light sources wherein the light emission peak wavelength is in the green region, and a third light source wherein the light emission peak wavelength is in the blue region. The second light source includes a light emission peak wavelength greater than the first light source. In a first term, the first source emits light, and the blue pixel liquid-crystal layer is controlled to a transmissibility less than or equal to a threshold regardless of frame data. In a second term, the first light source is effectively not and the second and third sources are emitting light. The blue pixel liquid-crystal layer is controlled to a transmissibility according to frame data.

Liquid-crystal display device and liquid-crystal display device control method

There is provided a direct-view-type liquid crystal display device that includes a display portion in which a plurality of pixels are placed in a matrix, the display portion whose diagonal is 30 inches or more, in which the resolution of the display portion is 100 pixels or more per inch, the plurality of pixels include first to fourth pixels, and one of the first to fourth pixels is an RG-type formed of a red subpixel and a green subpixel and another of the first to fourth pixels is a BH-type formed of a blue subpixel and a green, yellow, or white subpixel.

Data signal lines, scanning signal lines, and pixels are formed in each of first and second regions of a liquid crystal panel, and the first half of a current frame and the second half of the current frame are written to the first and second regions, respectively. A data signal with polarity inverted for each vertical scanning period is supplied to each data signal line. A scanning direction of the first region is identical to a scanning direction of the second region and the first and second regions are arranged to line up in this order in the scanning direction. In the first and second regions, the potential of the data signal is corrected according to a distance from a scanning start end portion.

A display control circuit of a liquid crystal display device generates a double-speed progressive image signal by changing an input image signal based on interlaced scanning into a progressive scanning mode, and also by doubling the frame frequency. With the double-speed progressive image signal, a pixel value equivalent to an odd-numbered scanning line in an odd-numbered frame remains unchanged, a pixel value equivalent to an even-numbered scanning line is replaced with a black pixel value, a pixel value equivalent to an even-numbered scanning line in an even-numbered frame remains unchanged, and a pixel value equivalent to an odd-numbered scanning line is replaced with a black pixel value. An image that the double-speed interlace image signal represents is displayed on a liquid crystal panel.

The liquid crystal display apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention has a plurality of pixels including a red pixel, a green pixel and a blue pixel. In at least one example embodiment, each of the plurality of pixels has a plurality of subpixels including a first subpixel and a second subpixel. When the grayscale levels of input signals corresponding to the red, green and blue pixels are equal to one another at a given level, the ratio of the difference in luminance between the first and second subpixels of one of the red, green and blue pixels to the maximum luminance of that one of the red, green and blue pixels is greater than the ratio of the difference in luminance between the first and second subpixels of each one of the other two pixels to the maximum luminance of the respective one of the other two pixels.
