A liquid crystal viewfinder includes a plurality of liquid crystal display sections for respectively displaying images of a plurality of colors so as to obtain a full-color image, and an eyepiece. The liquid crystal display sections are arranged on the same plane along an outer side surface of an image pick up apparatus. A liquid crystal projector of the type, wherein the light emitted from a light source is split into a red beam, a green beam, and a blue beam, and these beams are applied to red-image, green-image, and blue-image display LCD panels, the red-image beam, the green-image beam, and the blue-image beam emerging from these LCD panels are combined and projected by a projection lens, thereby to form a full-color image. The projector has an optical system which guides the beams such that these beam have optical paths of the same length which extend from the light source or the LCD panels to the projection lens.

A liquid crystal projector includes a liquid crystal panel, a light source for illuminating the liquid crystal panel, a back-projection type screen having on its surface a lenticular lens in which many vertical or horizontal stripe lenses are arranged in parallel, a projection lens for enlargedly projecting light transmitted through the liquid crystal panel onto the back-projection type screen, a light-falling polarized plate arranged between the light-falling plane of the liquid crystal panel and the light source, for transmitting the light from the light source, and oscillating in a predetermined direction, to fall on the liquid crystal panel, and an image-forming polarizing plate arranged between the light-outgoing plane of the liquid crystal panel and the projection lens or in a projection path from the projection lens to the screen, to allow the liquid transmitted through the liquid crystal panel, and oscillating in a predetermined direction, to pass through, thereby forming a light image.

In order to effectively use light from a light source, the light from the light source is split into P-polarized light and S-polarized light by a splitter or the like. The split P-polarized light is directly incident on a liquid crystal display apparatus for displaying an image by using P-polarized light. The split S-polarized light is optically rotated by a wavelength plate or the like and converted into P-polarized light. This P-polarized light is also incident on the liquid crystal display apparatus. The liquid crystal display apparatus effectively utilizes the light from the light source and displays an image with high luminance.

An elongated X-shaped prism comprising an X-shaped combination of four transparent plates and one central rectangular solid block member. The four transparent plates are disposed in an X-shaped state and each has one side edge adhered to a corresponding side-face of the central member, the width of each side-face of the central member being equal to thickness of each of the four transparent plates. The central member has a refraction index which is higher than the refraction index of the transparent plates. One side surface of the transparent plates is coated with an optical layer.
