The detected member is fixed to an inside member rotating with the driven shaft. The detected member has a hollow cylindrical portion which extends in an axial direction and is provided with a plurality of projections at even intervals in a circumferential direction on its inner peripheral surface. A bearing apparatus is provided for a driven shaft of an automobile. It includes a rotational speed detector for detecting a rotational speed of a wheel of the automobile by detecting the rotational speed of a circular detected member which has a plurality of projections provided at even intervals in the circumferential direction. The detected member is fixed to one end of a driven shaft. The other end of the driven shaft includes a flange for mounting of a wheel. The shaft is part of an inside member which is rotatably supported by an outside member fixed to a chassis through a plurality of rolling elements. A torque sensor which includes two cylinders fixed to two shafts connected with each other through a torsion bar. The magnetic coupling state of the two cylinders is made variable corresponding to relative rotations of the two shafts. The magnetic coupling state thereof is detected by a coil impedance, which is indicative of a torque acting on the shafts. The two cylinders form at the opposite end edges thereof teeth provided with cutouts disposed circumferentially of the cylinders and are opposite to each other at portions of about half a width of each tooth. The two shafts are regulated by rotation so as to not put the teeth of the cylinders completely opposite or non-opposite to each other.

A wheel bearing apparatus provided with a wheel rotational speed detector which has a simplified L-shape and is constituted by a detector end portion and a circuit housing perpendicular to the detector end portion. The detector end portion contains a sensor in opposition to a detected member fixed to a rotating inside member of the wheel bearing and is embedded in an outside member of the wheel bearing, while the circuit housing contains a circuit for processing a signal input from the sensor and is mounted on an outside surface of the outside member in parallel with the axial direction of the outside member so that the circuit housing is inside in the radial direction of the outside surface of a flange provided for the inside member.

A bearing assembly for an axle shaft of a vehicle. An inner ring includes a cylindrical body and an outer flange for mounting a wheel. On a portion of the cylindrical body adjacent the flange is mounted a revolution detection ring which has a seal contact portion and a gear-shaped detected portion having a plurality of projections circumferentially spaced on the outer peripheral surface thereof. The bearing assembly also has an outer ring which is coupled with the inner ring through rolling elements and mounted to the chassis of the vehicle. A sensor is mounted on the outer ring such that it confronts the gear-shaped portion of the revolution detection ring and detects the projections passing by the sensor so as to determine the annular speed of the wheel. The assembly also has a bearing seal which is mounted on the outer ring and kept in contact with the seal contact portion of the revolution detection ring so as to prevent contamination by sand, mud, or the like.
