An optical transmission system includes: a reception apparatus configured to receive signal light separated from wavelength division multiplexing light; and a management apparatus configured to manage a plurality of optical transmission apparatuses that transmit the wavelength division multiplexing light, wherein the reception apparatus further comprises: an amplification section configured to amplify each power of electric signals for demodulating the signal light within a predetermined tolerance level, the electric signals being converted from mixed light of local light and the signal light input into the reception apparatus; an adjustment section configured to adjust power of the signal light input into the reception apparatus or power of the local light; and a controller configured to control the adjustment section based on an adjustment amount notified by the management apparatus, the management apparatus includes a computer.

A dispersion compensation device includes: an optical branching unit to branch an optical signal to be received; a first dispersion compensator to perform dispersion compensation on one part of the optical signal branched by the optical branching unit with a variable compensation amount; a second dispersion compensator to perform dispersion compensation on another part of the optical signal branched by the optical branching unit; a monitoring unit to monitor the communication quality of an output optical signal of the second dispersion compensator; and a controlling unit to determine the direction of variation in chromatic dispersion of the optical signal based on the direction of variation in communication quality monitored by the monitoring unit and control the compensation amount of the first dispersion compensator based on the result of the determination.

Dispersion compensation device, optical reception device, method for dispersion compensation, and method for optical reception

An optical transmission apparatus that improves optical transmission quality by performing an optical noise correction and optical level detection with great precision. A first optical amplifier performs optical amplification with an optical fiber transmission line as an amplification medium. A second optical amplifier inputs second excitation light into an amplification medium in which an active substance for optical amplification is doped to perform optical amplification. A first optical level detector monitors, before transmitting an optical signal, a level of optical noise scattered by the first optical amplifier by emitting first excitation light in an operating environment and detects an optical level at the time of transmitting the optical signal by subtracting the level of the optical noise from a signal amplified by the first optical amplifier. A second optical level detector monitors, before transmitting an optical signal, a level of optical noise emitted from the second optical amplifier by emitting the second excitation light in the operating environment and detects an optical level at the time of transmitting the optical signal by subtracting the level of the optical noise from a signal amplified by the second optical amplifier.

Optical transmission apparatus

An optical cross-connect apparatus that realizes high throughput in optical cross-connection by performing large-scale switching. An input optical signal processing section converts wavelengths contained in each input WDM signal into wavelengths the number of which is equal to the number of WDM signals, compresses the pulse widths of the WDM signals by dividing the pulse widths by the number of the wavelengths contained in each input WDM signal, and performs a phase shift so that the phases of a plurality of compressed signal will not be the same. A wavelength switching section includes passive optical devices and distributes the optical signals processed by the input optical signal processing section according to wavelengths. An output optical signal processing section converts wavelengths contained in the optical signals distributed by the wavelength switching section into wavelengths recognized from the phases of the optical signals, expands the pulse widths of the optical signals, and outputs WDM signals.

Optical cross-connect apparatus

The invention relates to a method of activating an optical communication system comprising a plurality of optical amplifiers having an optical amplifier, between optical transmission lines in which wavelength-division multiplex optical signals are transmitted. The method comprises steps of: generating a desired slope in a desired wavelength range of a gain wavelength curve of the optical amplifier; adjusting an output of the optical amplifier to a desired output level; performing the above two steps in a plurality of optical repeater stations, the steps being carried out in sequence from the first to the last optical repeater stations; and adjusting a level in each optical signal in the wavelength-division multiplex optical signal so as to have substantially constant optical signal-to-noise ratios in the optical signals to be received. Activating the optical communication system according to this procedure allows proper execution of gain slope compensation, output control, and pre-emphasis control.

In a method of measuring an optical signal-to-noise ratio according to the present invention, a partial optical signal-to-noise ratio is defined, the partial optical signal-to-noise ratio is calculated from a predetermined physical quantity, the sum of inverse numbers of the partial optical signal-to-noise ratios is calculated, and further an inverse number of the sum is calculated to acquire an optical signal-to-noise ratio. The present invention makes it possible to measure optical SNR without directly measuring ASE in the optical signal. The present invention provides a measuring apparatus, a measuring circuit, a pre-emphasis method, an optical communication system, and a controlling apparatus each utilizing this method.

An optical amplifying apparatus of the present invention comprises a correction part for correcting a predetermined fixed value of an output optical level by a correction amount according to an optical power of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). The correction amount is, for example, computed by predetermined formulas. According to the present invention, when a WDM optical signal is optically amplified, the output is fixedly amplified for each channel by the correction amount which is a value obtained with the ASE levels taken into consideration, so that a fluctuation in the level of the average optical power of the channels is suppressed even if an optical signal is dropped/added therefrom/thereto during repeated transmissions.

The optical amplifying apparatus comprises a first optical amplifier, an optical attenuator, a second optical amplifier and a controller. The first optical amplifier changes the target value of output light when the variance amount of input light reaches a predetermined value. The controller changes the attenuation amount of attenuator in accordance with a difference between the target value and the changed target value of the output light level of the first optical amplifier, when the target value of the output light level of the first optical amplifier is changed.
