This projection display device includes: a light source unit emitting a white light along a first optical axis; a lighting unit provided on a second optical axis, the lighting unit splitting the white light into predetermined color lights and uniformizing an illuminance distribution of the predetermined color lights; an image generator including a display element modulating the predetermined color lights, and a projection lens projecting an image light including the predetermined color lights modulated along a third optical axis; at least one optical path switching unit selectively switching between reflection and transmission of the white light; a light diffuser including a diffusion optical system spreading the white light to a desired illumination area and projecting the spread white light as an illumination light; and a controller causing the at least one optical path switching unit to switch between emission of the image light and emission of the illumination light.

The polarization adjustment element is provided between the polarization conversion element and the color separation unit on an optical path of the light emitted from the light source.

An illumination apparatus includes multiple liquid crystal panels, a polarization-state adjusting element, and a cross dichroic prism. A green component light includes a central-wavelength component light, a short-wavelength component light, and a long-wavelength component light. The polarization-state adjusting element separately adjusts a polarization state of the central-wavelength component light and each of polarization states of the long-wavelength component light and the short-wavelength component light.

An optical element includes a dichroic surface formed by a multilayer dielectric film or the like and a polarized beam splitter surface formed by a multilayer dielectric film or the like. The dichroic surface transmits light (G and R) from a green wavelength band to a red wavelength band irrespective of the polarization directions of light, and reflects light (B) in a blue wavelength band. The polarized beam splitter surface reflects an S-polarized light (Gs) in a green wavelength band. Furthermore, the polarized beam splitter surface transmits an S-polarized light (Bs) and a P-polarized light (Bp) in the blue wavelength band, and also transmits the S-polarized light (Rs) and P-polarized light (Rp) in the red wavelength band.

An optical element includes a mirror surface configured to transmit certain part of incident light and to reflect the other part of the incident light. The mirror surface has a first region and a second region. The first region includes a first polarization conversion layer configured to convert a polarization direction of incident light incident on the first region from one linear polarization into a different linear polarization. A region of the optical element from which light transmitted through the first region is emitted includes a second polarization conversion layer configured to convert a polarization direction of the light transmitted through the first region from the different linear polarization into the one linear polarization.

The lighting unit includes the DMDs (R), (G), and (B). The lighting unit also includes: the prisms () and () combining the light emitted from the DMDs (R), (G), and (B); and the light modulating optical device (G). The incident light including the green component light and the yellow component light enters the light modulating optical device (G). The light modulating optical device (G) transmits the green component light and changes a transmittance of the yellow component light depending on a change of a molecular state. Light having emitted from the light modulating optical device (G) enters the DMD (G), which corresponds to the incident light.

Lighting unit and projection display apparatus

A projection display apparatus includes: a red imager; a green imager; a blue imager; a polarization adjusting element; a color combining unit; and a controller. A superimposed component light enters the polarization adjusting element together with the fourth color component light. The polarization adjusting element transmits the superimposed component light, whereas transmitting the fourth color component light by adjusting the polarization of the fourth color component light in accordance with switching between a low voltage applied state and a high voltage applied state. The controller controls re-orienting operation of applying a high voltage to the polarization adjusting element.
