An analytical method which comprises sampling a predetermined amount of a liquid sample, bringing the sample to a vapor-liquid equilibrium at a predetermined temperature and pressure, separating the resultant gaseous and liquid fractions from each other, and analyzing the gaseous fraction as a gas sample and the liquid fraction as a liquid sample, and an apparatus for practicing the analytical method. By this method or apparatus, the light and heavy fractions of a substance can be simultaneously analyzed in composition and chemical structure. This enables the modification and the service life of a chemical substance like a lubricating oil, in which the qualities may change with the passage of time, to be estimated or foreseen.

The general-purpose grease composition of the invention is usable in a wide temperature range or, in particular, at very low temperatures down to -50.degree. C. The grease composition comprises, as the essential components, a lubricating base oil mainly composed of a deep-freeze dewaxed base oil having a fluidity point of -35.degree. C. or below and a thickener which is typically a lithium soap such as lithium 12-hydroxystearate.

General-purpose grease composition

A grease composition comprising: (a) from 1 to 4 parts by weight of a zinc dithiophosphate; (b) from 2 to 6 parts by weight of a phosphoric acid ester; and (c) from 0.5 to 2 parts by weight of an organotin compound admixed in 100 parts by weight of a base grease. This grease has excellent lubricating characteristics and is even suitable for use in delicate bearings such as needle bearings.

Grease composition

A lubricating grease composition consisting of lubricating base oil comprising lithium salt of a blended fatty acid prepared by mixing (a) 5 to 15 % by weight, based on the weight of the lubricating grease composition, of a natural fatty acid selected from the group consisting of stearic acid and 12-hydroxystearic acid with (b) a mixture of synthetic fatty acids having 8 to 24 carbon atoms in an amount of 0.5 to 50 % by weight, based on the weight of said natural fatty acid, is superior in roll stability in the presence of water as well as thermal stability.
