A catalyst for use in a process for purifying exhaust gas from a gasoline engine of the fuel-direct-injection type that varies, in response to changes in the air-fuel ratio, between a first exhaust-gas state featured by an air-fuel ratio in the vicinity of the stoichiometrical air-fuel ratio, and a second exhaust-gas state that forms a more oxidizing, low-temperature atmosphere and that is featured by an air-fuel ratio greater than the stoichiometrical air-fuel ratio, the catalyst being obtained by causing a noble metal and a rare-earth oxide and/or a transition metal to be carried by or to be mixed with a fire-resistant inorganic oxide.

Catalyst for use in a process for purifying exhaust gas from gasoline engines of a fuel-direct-injection type

A catalyst which purges a diesel engine exhaust gas of HC, CO, and SOF and reduces the emission of particulates as well and a method for the production thereof are provided. The catalyst for purifying a diesel engine exhaust gas has deposited on a refractory three-dimensional structure a catalyst component comprising silica-alumina supporting at least one noble metal selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, and rhodium and zeolite. This catalyst is produced by adding a noble metal component into a slurry of silica-alumina thereby inducing chemical adsorption, then adding zeolite to the resultant mixture thereby obtaining a mixed slurry of a noble metal-supporting silica-alumina and zeolite, dipping a refractory three-dimensional structure in the slurry thereby inducing deposition of the catalyst component, and subsequently calcining the resultant composite.

Exhaust emission control catalysts capable of efficiently removing nitrogen oxide in exhaust containing a large amount of oxygen emitted from a diesel engine and the like and reducing the generation of particulate matter in the exhaust under high temperature conditions, and a method for controlling the emission of exhaust using the exhaust emission control catalysts. The exhaust emission control catalysts contain copper, praseodymium, and yttrium. The method for controlling the emission of exhaust purifies exhaust containing hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide in a mole ratio (hydrocarbon/nitrogen oxide) within a range of 0.5 to 30 by bringing the exhaust into contact with the exhaust emission control catalysts. It is possible to efficiently remove nitrogen oxide in the exhaust by reduction while suppressing the oxidation of sulfur dioxide in the exhaust.

An exhaust-gas-purifying catalyst is made by depositing on a support iridium serving as a catalyst active substance, sulfur for improving the catalyst activity of iridium and, if necessary, platinum. The sulfur is preferably contained as a sulfate. The exhaust-gas-purifying process of the present invention is a process in which exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine is allowed to pass through the exhaust-gas-purifying catalyst with the exhaust-gas temperature being set in the range of 200&deg; C. to 700&deg; C. at the inlet of the exhaust-gas-purifying catalyst.
