Provided is a flat fiber-reinforced plastic strand which is produced by curing a twisted resin-impregnated strand and has no disturbed fiber orientation, and a flat fiber-reinforced plastic strand sheet which is produced by using said flat fiber-reinforced plastic strands. According to a method of manufacturing the flat fiber-reinforced plastic strand, (a) a twisted resin-impregnated strand fin an uncured state, the strand including a plurality of reinforcing fibers f, is fed in a state of tension between a pair of heated steel beltsA andB facing each other and making rotation movements; and (b) the resin-impregnated strand fis sandwiched and heated by the steel beltsA andB, and pressurized from both sides of the strand fto form a cross section of the strand into a flat shape, and, with the shape being kept, a resin is cured and cooled.

Flat fiber-reinforced plastic strand, flat fiber-reinforced plastic strand sheet, and method of manufacturing the same

A continuous reinforcing fiber sheet in which reinforcing fibers are arranged at an arbitrary angle to the main axis. The continuous reinforcing fiber sheet is well applicable to pultrusion forming without the risk of the reinforcing fibers being dispersed. This permits use of the continuous reinforcing fiber sheet in a long fiber-reinforced plastic structural member having remarkably improved torsional rigidity. The continuous reinforcing fiber sheet has a continuous resin-penetrable support sheet and a reinforcing fiber layer held by the resin-penetrable support sheet . Long reinforcing fibers in the reinforcing fiber layer have substantially a certain length (F) and are arranged in the longitudinal direction of the resin-penetrable support sheet at a prescribed angle (&agr;) to the longitudinal direction of the resin-penetrable support sheet

Continuous reinforcing fiber sheet and manufacturing method thereof

The present invention relates to a hybrid prepreg having reinforcing carbon fibers and foreign fibers. The carbon fibers have a diameter ranging from 5-30 microns and are unidirectionally arranged. The foreign fibers are composed either of single monofilaments having a diameter ranging from between about 50-150 microns or of strands formed by bundling together a plurality of single monofilaments having a diameter ranging from between about 5-50 microns. If strands are employed, they have a conversion diameter (D.sub.0) which is less than about 500 microns. The conversion diameter (D.sub.0) is represented by the following equation: ##EQU1## wherein n is the number of monofilaments used in forming the strand, and wherein d is the diameter of these monofilaments. Examples of foreign fibers which can be used when practicing this invention include boron fibers, metal fibers and organic fibers. These foreign fibers are spaced at fixed intervals, arranged in the same direction as the direction of the reinforcing carbon fibers, and positioned approximately at or near the center of the resulting prepreg. The prepreg prepared in accordance with the present invention also includes a thermosetting matrix resin in which the reinforcing carbon fibers and the foreign fibers are impregnated.

Method of making a hybrid prepreg

A hybrid laminated prepreg is disclosed, which comprises a resin layer, a decorative layer laminated thereon and having a pattern, and a transparent prepreg layer laminated on the decorative layer. In manufacturing a fiber reinforced composite resin material molding, the hybrid prepreg is laminated in a couple of layers on the outermost one of laminated layers of usual prepreg. Thus, it is possible to easily decorate the obtainable molding to readily provide an aesthetic sense to the appearance of the molding and also dispense with time-consuming operation of coating or the like. Further, unlike the coating or the like, it is possible to stably hold the aesthetic sense of the appearance for long time. The hybrid laminated prepreg can be suitably used for fiber reinforced composite resin material moldings, for instance such sport articles as golf club shafts, tennis rackets, ski pole shafts and fishing rods, fancy articles, briefcases such as attache cases, pipes such as bicycle frames and panels such as fair-faced wall panels.

In the prepreg manufacuturing method according to the present invention, at least one of a first and second release papers is coated with a matrix resin having a low viscosity. Reinforcing fibers are supplied in between the release papers and arranged on the matrix resin layer. Then, the reinforcing fibers are impregnated with the matrix resin by heating and pressing the release papers. After separating one of the papers, a room-temperature curing type hardener is applied onto the matrix resin layer to form a high viscosity layer on a surface layer of the matrix resin layer. Thereafter, a cover film is laid over the surface layer to make a prepreg.
