A hydraulic capsule is provided for use in connection with an engine decompression brake or other variable valvetrain lifts. The hydraulic capsule comprises a main body having a latch pin, a first housing defined by a first outer diameter, an upper chamber defined by the first housing, and a first biasing member, and the latch pin is disposed inside the upper chamber and held by the first biasing member; a second body comprising a plunger, a second housing defined by a second outer diameter, a lower chamber defined by the second housing, and means for restricting the plunger at the bottom of the lower chamber, and the plunger is slidably moveable up and down inside the second housing; a biasing means, wherein the biasing means keeps the main body and the second body in contact; and a check assembly. The first outer diameter and the second diameter can be chosen according to manufacturing specifications and can be the same or different.

Hydraulic capsules for valvetrain assembly

A valve train assembly for an internal combustion engine includes: a dual body rocker arm for controlling a valve of a cylinder, the rocker arm including a first body, a second body mounted for pivotal motion with respect to the first body, a first biasing means, and a latch pin moveable between a first position in which the latch pin latches the first body and the second body together and a second position in which the first body and the second body are un-latched to allow pivotal motion of the second body relative to the first body; and an actuator arrangement external to the dual body rocker arm and drivable by an actuation source, the actuator arrangement moving the latch pin from one of the first position and the second position to the other of the first position to the second position.

Valve train assembly

A type II valve train assembly that selectively opens first and second intake valves and first and second exhaust valves is provided. The valve train assembly includes an intake rocker arm assembly and an exhaust rocker arm assembly. The valve train assembly is configurable for operation in any combination of activated and deactivated states of engine braking and cylinder deactivation. The exhaust rocker arm assembly includes a first exhaust rocker arm, a second exhaust rocker arm and an engine brake exhaust rocker arm. A first exhaust HLA is associated with the first exhaust rocker arm. A second exhaust HLA is associated with the second exhaust valve. An exhaust actuation assembly selectively actuates to alter travel of the first and second exhaust HLA's to change a state of cylinder deactivation between activated and deactivated.

A type II valve train assembly that selectively opens first and second intake valves and first and second exhaust valves is provided. The valve train assembly includes an intake rocker arm assembly and an exhaust rocker arm assembly. The valve train assembly is configurable for operation in any combination of activated and deactivated states of engine braking and cylinder deactivation. The exhaust rocker arm assembly includes a first exhaust rocker arm, a second exhaust rocker arm and an engine brake exhaust rocker arm. A first exhaust HLA is associated with the first exhaust rocker arm. A second exhaust HLA is associated with the second exhaust valve. An exhaust actuation assembly selectively actuates to alter travel of the first and second exhaust HLAs to change a state of cylinder deactivation between activated and deactivated.

A dual body rocker arm for controlling a valve of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine includes: a first body; a second body; and a latching arrangement moveable to latch and unlatch the first body and the second body. The latching arrangement includes: a latch pin moveable between a first position in which the latch pin latches the first body and the second body together and a second position in which the first body and the second body are un-latched; and a lever mounted for pivotal motion relative to the first body, a first end of the lever contacting the latch pin, and a second end of the lever configured to contact an actuation arrangement. In use, when the actuation arrangement exerts a force on the second end of the lever, the lever pivots such that the first end of the lever exerts a force on the latch pin.

Rocker arm

An exhaust valve rocker arm assembly operable in a combustion engine mode and an engine braking mode can include a rocker shaft and a rocker arm. The rocker shaft can define a pressurized oil supply conduit. The rocker arm can receive the rocker shaft and is configured to rotate around the rocker shaft. The rocker arm can have an oil supply passage defined therein. A valve bridge can engage a first exhaust valve and a second exhaust valve. A hydraulic lash adjuster assembly can include first and second plunger bodies, the first plunger body can engage the valve bridge.

Rocker arm assembly for engine braking

An engine brake rocker arm assembly operable in an engine drive mode and an engine braking mode, the engine brake rocker arm assembly selectively opening first and second exhaust valves, includes: an exhaust valve rocker arm assembly having an exhaust rocker arm that rotates around a rocker shaft; and an engine brake actuation assembly including an actuator assembly; an actuator lever; and a mechanically controlled engine brake actuator that moves between a first position corresponding to the engine brake mode in which the second exhaust valve is opened prior to the first exhaust valve, and a second position corresponding to the drive mode in which the second valve is not opened prior to the first exhaust valve.

Valvetrain for diesel engine having de-compression engine brake

An actuator arrangement for controlling a first latching arrangement of a first dual body rocker arm for controlling an intake valve of an internal combustion engine, and for controlling a second latching arrangement of a second dual body rocker arm for controlling an exhaust valve of the internal combustion engine, the first and second dual body rocker arms each including a first body, a second body, and the latching arrangement controllable to latch and unlatch the first body and the second body. The actuator arrangement includes: an actuation source; and an actuation transmission arrangement for transmitting movement of the actuation source to both the first latching arrangement and the second latching arrangement. In use, movement of the actuation source causes, via the actuation transmission arrangement, control of the first latching arrangement and of the second latching arrangement in common.

Actuator arrangement

A valve train assembly includes: a first group of one or more dual body rocker arms and a second group of one or more dual body rocker arms, the first group for controlling one or more valves of a first cylinder and the second group for controlling one or more valves of a second cylinder, each of the dual body rocker arms including a first body, a second body, and a latching arrangement for latching and unlatching the first body and the second body; and an actuator arrangement external to the dual body rocker arms for controlling the latching arrangement, the actuator arrangement including a shaft having a first set of one or more cams for controlling the latching arrangements of the first group of one or more dual body rocker arms and a second set of one or more cams for controlling the latching arrangements of the second group.

An exhaust valve rocker arm assembly operable in a combustion engine mode and an engine braking mode includes: a rocker shaft that defines a pressurized oil supply conduit; a rocker arm that receives the rocker shaft and rotates around the rocker shaft, the rocker arm including a rocker arm oil supply passage defined in the rocker arm; a valve bridge for engaging a first exhaust valve and a second exhaust valve; a hydraulic lash adjuster assembly, disposed on the rocker arm, including a first plunger body movable between a first position and a second position; and a check valve, disposed on the rocker arm, including an actuator for selectively releasing pressure in the hydraulic lash adjuster assembly. In the engine braking mode, by rotation of the rocker arm the pressurized oil supply conduit is brought into fluid communication with the rocker arm oil supply passage.

A dual body rocker arm for a valve train assembly of an internal combustion engine includes: an outer body having a protrusion; an inner body connected to the outer body and arranged for pivotal movement relative to the outer body about an axis between a first position and a second position; and a torsional biasing element supported by the protrusion and arranged to bias the inner body relative to the outer body towards one of the first position and the second position. The protrusion is formed integrally with the outer body.

A valve train assembly includes a first exhaust valve, a second exhaust valve, and a valve bridge including a main body and a lever rotatably coupled to the main body, the main body configured to engage the first exhaust valve, and the lever configured to engage the second exhaust valve. An exhaust valve rocker arm assembly is configured to selectively open the first and second exhaust valves, the exhaust valve rocker arm assembly including an exhaust valve rocker arm with a hydraulic lash adjuster (HLA) assembly coupled thereto, the HLA assembly in contact with the valve bridge main body. An engine brake rocker arm assembly is configured to selectively open the second exhaust valve and including an engine brake rocker arm with a combined HLA and added motion capsule coupled thereto. The combined HLA and added motion capsule is configured to selectively engage and rotate the lever.

Rocker arm assembly

A valvetrain assembly includes: a main exhaust rocker arm assembly having a first main exhaust rocker arm and a second main exhaust rocker arm; a first latch assembly that selectively moves between a first position in which the first and second main exhaust rocker arms are locked for concurrent rotation and a second position in which one of the first and second main exhaust rocker arms rotates relative to an other of the first and second main exhaust rocker arms; a secondary exhaust rocker arm assembly having a first secondary exhaust rocker arm and a second secondary exhaust rocker arm; a second latch assembly that selectively moves between a first position in which the first and second secondary exhaust rocker arms are locked for concurrent rotation and a second position in which one of the first and second secondary exhaust rocker arms rotates.

Heavy duty variable valve actuation

An actuator arrangement for controlling a latching arrangement of a dual body rocker arm of an internal combustion engine, the dual body rocker arm comprising a first body, a second body, and the latching arrangement, the latching arrangement being controllable to latch and unlatch the first body and the second body. The actuator arrangement includes: an actuation source; a shaft including a cam for controlling the latching arrangement; and a gear mechanism for translating a continuous rotation of the actuation source into an intermittent rotation of the shaft in steps of a predefined degree. In use, a continuous rotation of the actuation source causes, via the gear mechanism, the shaft to rotate in steps of a predefined degree, thereby to change an orientation of the cam relative to the latching arrangement by a predefined amount, so as to control the latching arrangement.

An arrangement for a valve train assembly in an internal combustion engine includes: a valve train component having a body that defines a bore with a first bore section and a second bore section, the first bore section having a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the second bore section; and a hydraulic lash adjustor having a plunger mounted for reciprocal sliding movement in the second bore section to enable the hydraulic lash adjustor to expand and contract, the hydraulic lash adjustor further including a first chamber and a second chamber. The first chamber is at least partly in the first bore section and can hold hydraulic fluid for flowing into the second chamber through a valve in response to the hydraulic lash adjustor expanding.
